I love what you said about the braids. It is a very intimate act ( not sexually) but as women coming together sharing energy in doing hair. Some dont think so but i feel it is too. It is our crown
Yes 💯!! You are so right! It’s definitely a labour of love and it’s extremely intimate to have someone stand for 3-7+ hours handling your hair, doing their best to make you look and feel your best, intimate is the exact word for it- you’re so in each others space for so long, sharing stories and experiences and learning new things and sharing common interests. I was also saying to auntie how in western cultures we tend to stop doing each others hair around teen years when we no longer have sleep overs and how i love that other cultures like Arab and African women will get together to do hair and other beauty treatments to each other to make each other feel their best and most beautiful and I love that I get to experience some of that through auntie. I love every minute of her braiding my hair (minus the neck and back pain 🤣 but it’s worth it) it really is an honour to get to experience this. I’ve only ever had my hair done by my mum or by hair dressers or in hospital the care staff had to dry it for me etc… but I never got the experience of being a little girl and doing each others hair and learning how other cultures continue to do this for each other even into womanhood and she shares other things of her culture with me too like she invited me to do pre-wedding bridal beauty practices from her culture to prepare for my wedding, she is going to teach me to cook Nigerian food for my future husband too. And as you say our hair is our crown, she actually also makes all my shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body scrubs face wash and scrub and skin care etc too so she has been taking very good care of my crown and teaching me about curl care too - women don’t let another woman’s crown fall and she has put a year of work into helping me fix my crown after it fell. I also asked her to teach me how to braid like her… she doesn’t know I asked so I can help her with her hair one day too because she’s always doing everything for everyone and even ours off doing her own braids completely and one day I’d like to put the time and energy into making her feel beautiful like she does for me ☺️ - thank you for your lovely comment and for joining us ☺️ I hope you’re well and enjoying the festive period 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
