    I worked at a Midas years ago, early 2000's, and we had a few airbags in the back of the shop. We decided to set them up in the back lot and set them off. We set up about 30ft of wires to them with a tire on top of one and a cinder block on top of the other. When they went off they sent those into low Earth orbit just about. The tire decided to get a little off course and come back at us. You know, safety first...

    I am an engineer at a facility that produces the generate for airbags. The smaller charge is called an initiator. There are tablets on the inside of the wire filter.
    I would guess that the heat/friction was enough to burn the tablets and set imitator off due to how sensitive they are to friction and heat.
    The wire filter filters any residue and particulate that may escape into the bag. So you don’t get burnt powder in your face as well.

    Chemist here: Just so you guys know, this was probably the most dangerous thing you could possibly do with an airbag charge. most older airbags contain sodium azide, which is one of the most toxic compounds ever discovered. Even breathing, touching or ingesting minute amounts of sodium azide can kill you. On contact with water, sodium azide produces an extremely toxic gas, and on contact with most metals will form a shock/touch sensitive explosive. There have been cases of people washing sodium azide down drains and causing huge explosions in sewer systems.
    In other words, keep up the great work!

    I found the inflator rig funny for two reasons:
    1: It's a radial inflator, so they basically just oriented the plane of the inflator exactly so it pointed at the water jet.
    2: If it were a linear inflator, it would either break those screws like papier-mache or carry the whole thing to the other side of the warehouse.

    Hi, I worked at a certain airbag company, (that was in the news QUITE a bit the past few years) making the propellant and those actual inflators. All you set off was the initiator, which is like a "blasting cap, there is still another couple of grams of actual amoniumnitrate propellant in there, but it desolves in water, if it had gone off, that wooden rig you built would have been obliterated. It's been 5 or so years since I have worked with this material, so I've forgotten exactly how much of what goes into it. (Part of the reason I quit working there, memory issues due to ptsd) Anyway when I left there, I was working in the ballistics lab, where we tested the energy these things produce, long story short it's about 1/2-2/3 that of a m69 fragmentation grenade. (I was also in the army for a number of years, hence the ptsd.) Love the channel and the crazy stuff you do.🖒🖒

    An airbag will hit a max pressure of 21psi then deflate to 12psi by the time your body impacts it, the holes in the material are to facilitate the escaping gases, in comparison....a basketball is around 7psi fully inflated, and that hurts bad enough to get hit in the face with, but still better than hitting a metal steering wheel full force. Also that's why you must also wear your seatbelt properly to give your body enough time for the airbag to vent excess pressure. as to the burns, those are typically caused by the material, like a rugburn.

    If memory serves me correct that "coil" of wire is actually a shock dampener. I remember a company that made those coming to give me a demo and some samples. The wire is woven together and then compressed and is designed to absorb large shocks where elastomers would either not work or be too soft. But in this case it could serve other purposes since its also porous.

    I did some road work at a factory where they create the explosives that go into these.
    They told me that this stuff is so unstable that if you picked up a granule of the stuff and dropped it, the static charge it would generate from falling through the air would make it detonate before it hit the ground.
    The only reason it doesn't spontaneously detonate in the housing (usually) is that it's grounded to the housing. So ya, think of it like a little pill of nitroglycerine, though its actually more unstable, inside a metal housing that will instead turn the explosion into jets of explosive fire, rather than a fireball.

  • @tanithrosenbaum
    @tanithrosenbaum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's likely filtering out fire. Seriously. They used to do that in old coal mine lamps too, a thin wire mesh keeps a carbide lamp flame from setting off any mine explosion from methane pockets in the coal by cooling the gas quickly enough that it won't ignite anything. I would suspect here the wire mesh keeps the flames inside the gas generator, and makes sure they don't actually set the air bag or the car on fire. Which would probably be a bad thing if you've just been in a accident...

    back in the mid 1980s.. i stopped by a junkyard in sun valley ca. one of the buildings was rented to another group.. they were busy cutting the cloth from used airbags.. stuffing them with trash out of the can... paper drink cups.. smashed soda cans. plastic bottles and then gluing the soft shell closed with the multi color vinyl repair kits that used to be available. when i mentioned to the main yard manager what they were doing.. he answered .. they pay their rent.. i ask no questions. nobody i called later seemed to care or believe me.
