      Speaking of the grim donut, I think they should try running the fork backward. Yeah, it shortens the wheelbase a bit, but if they’re going for future geometry, what’s more future than a NEGATIVE offset fork?
      Just a thought, just an experiment. One run than done... unless I’m ahead of my time and it works wonders, then give me credit for the idea!😂😂😂
      Seriously though, I’d like to see them try it once.

    I've finally learned how to start breaking down where each down country bike fits it's niche. If all you want is to get up fast and come down fast, not quite as much in between because the slackness and length isn't quite as maneuverable on flowy, quick turning trails, this is your bike. Add a more limited budget to your constraints then this is definitely the bike for you. If you want comfort that climbs efficiently and not worried about the fastest uphill but want to smash everything downhill comfortably at even higher speed, AND have an unlimited budget, then the Tallboy is for you. If you want fast climbing, but also great maneuverability but not smashing too much too fast and have an unlimited budget, then the Ripley is for you. If you have unlimited budget, and want to have more downhill capability but not necessarily crazy smash, and want super maneuverability (the Porsche of down country bikes) but still climbs fast, the Pivot Trail 429 is your bike. If you want a fast climber, that is maneuverable, and still capable downhill but not crazy smash but are on a limited budget, the YT Izzo Pro Race with all the light bling is the bike for you. The Ripley & Trail 429 are pretty close to the same type of rider where we just love flowy, twisty trails with some tech and all-around capability. The YT Izzo is pretty close to those two, with a little bit of the Transition Spur.

      At 5'9" I feel fine and actually don't think about it. Except, like all guys, I wonder if this or that would make a difference. Before I bought my Commencal, rode my friend's Large Transition (similar geometry) it felt fine, but he said I looked a little stretched. He is 5'10". Again, I love my Meta TR, but I always wonder what if I bought a Large. However, had I bought the large I probably would have wondered if I should have bought the Medium.
      RecentlyI saw an inexperienced guy on a xtra-Large which was obviously too big for him He said it was great on the downhill but he was having trouble navigating it on the rocky flats. He had been tricked by a bikeshop (he didn't know it was going out of business) into buying the demo Trek.
      I ride slower techy trails great and downhill as fast as I dare, so I am sure I got the right size, but I always wonder. 🤪 I am a guy.

    Hmm I'm confused. In all other reviews they say the bike climbs techy stuff really well... I wouldn't know how long wheelbase has such a negative effect on that as long as you're not going up tight switchbacks. I'd rather be concerned with the slack head angle in that respect!

    Nice Review! I live in AZ and Salsa put me on the Spearfish, then the Spur. The Spearfish is a descender, especially sweeping turns. I disagree with your insight about climbing on the spur. It accelerates really quick, so sharp turns or rock gardens you come out of going up hill you can stomp on the pedals and it's gone. It feels like a hard tail with accelerations, but the rear shock is quick to rebound off of techie rock sections. Loving the Spur over the Spearfish!

    Man, if only Transition makes these bikes more available... Wouldn't have to research so many other bikes for comparison.

  • @peterknight7880
    @peterknight7880 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reading between the lines, it sounds like the bike is limited by its travel and that can get you into trouble because the geometry lulls you into a false sense of security. Maybe Transition have found the limit of "progressive" geometry for an XC bike?

    • @spiral99able
      @spiral99able 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @JF You guys hit the nail on the head. Progressive geo opens up the high speed capability. Which means wheels, tyres and frame need to be more robust, and that means more weight. The way I look at it, a super light xc bike is fun to ride most places untill it gets really narly, then it becomes scary and more chance of crashing so naturally you have to ride those sections slower.. At least if one does crash, they arn't going as fast when they do. So what I am trying to say is atm, weight and geometry are synonymous.

    • @weridebikes1000
      @weridebikes1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont think the bike is at all limited due to its travel. It does NOT feel like a 150mm bike even though its slack, it still feels every bit a lightweight bike. Just because the bike is slack, it doesnt mean you'll huck it harder, it just grants you better control at high speeds and especially when traction breaks. The only limit the bike has is how far you can pedal it.

  • @cypriano8763

      Exactly my thoughts too. I own a large and I'm 6ft exactly. The bike neither feels too long nor too unwieldy. I'm still running the stock bars at 800mm too. I thought I'd hate them that long but they felt great right out of the box.

    • @weridebikes1000

      it feels less than nimble because of the slack HT angle and the long wheelbase.
