  • This is my first-time reaction to Ren's Money Game Pt. 1. This is song #4 on my Ren Journey. Thank you for joining me! This is one of the most provocative pieces of art I have ever seen!

I must say your reaction/interpretation of Money Game pt 1 is brilliant. The last time a reactor had such great insight into this performance piece is Knox Hill & I highly recommend you check it out as well. As for Money Game part 2, be careful NOT to react to the live version, because it was an unfinished, abbreviated, accapella version that Ren was testing out. The full version is the official lyric version on his YT page. Money game part 3; which Ren claims, is the best live, one take music video he's ever done and he's very proud of the resulting product. Money Game part 3 is only a few weeks away from release and I'm looking forward to seeing it and hearing your reaction. Cheers my friend..

I'm almost embarrassed that, while I got most of the meaning behind this song in separate pieces, I still had not gained a complete understanding of it - even after many many views/listens.
Your breakdown was like you had drawn eyes onto me, allowing me to finally see it for what it is in its entirety.
    That was wonderful. Thank you.

I honestly think you are the only one to get this the first time. Your interpretation of the ending was phenomenal. I did not really get it--opening the eyes of the victim, realizing the game and fighting back. But then the idea that hte perpetrator figures the jig is up and decides to self imolate. Reminds me of modern U.S. politics right now. However, I do not see a lot of self imolation. What I see are people selling out to moneyed interestes and being replaced by new individuals in the game. There is a cycle to all this. Disturbing. Wait till you see Money Game II. Make sure to watch the oficial video first then the acapella version next if you so choose.

I thought I was already subbed, but now I am. That was the best description I have heard just like all your other reactions. Wow. Ren is very intelligent, and having those musical genetics makes him special. He is humble and honestly doesn't care about money, he wants to create music and art. As you can imagine he has been flooded by record labels and Ren has told them all "no thanks". The one label he said wanted him to cut up "Hi Ren, shorten it down to like 3 min., write and put some hooks in it and make it radio ready. That one he told them " hell no". That is his masterpiece. He has said there is nothing they can offer him because he can do it all, he needs nothing from them. Sure more money could help but he has been putting out great videos for $1000-$1500. Shoe string budget. He will just put the money he earns back into his art. The industry couldn't fathom doing anything that cheap.

One thing I see a lot of people miss is that the guitar is the object the captive uses to block their demise. Once their eyes are open, music and art are the weapons of resistance.

I like that observation about music & art but would add that there is a paradox about protest coming from within the big corporate music industry! This is another reason why Ren being independent is so appealing.

    • @ClearTheRubble7

This has been the best analysis I've seen so far.
Until earlier this year, I've never seen, or heard, an artist like Ren. The way he uses the music, beats and his voice to create such vivid scenes in a person's mind is absolutely, second to none.
I've always loved good music, and I love all genres of music, especially if that music either tells a good story, or can trigger my emotions. Big bonus points if the story is relevant, relatable, or inspirational/motivational. Ren has been ticking all of those boxes... every.... freaking..... time.
After listening to "Hi Ren", a number of months ago, it seems like there hasn't been a day where I haven't listened to something he's done.
The Big Push, the band he played and busked with in Brighton, are a combination of artists who make me think of Cream, Traffic, Queen, and Jethro Tull. They really do sound like one of the "supergroups" from back in the day.... maybe even better!
Seriously, I'm on the verge of writing an entire essay on the importance and impactful relevance of Ren's artistry. ... But I won't do that here... LOL I probably sound like some kind obsessed weirdo already. hahaha
    This man is something special.
Money Game, part two, really breaks things down to another level...
I'm so glad I've subscribed to your channel. I appreciate the thought and analysis you put into your reactions. (possibly because they are similar to my own. lol)
    Cheers!

I knew you would do an awesome in depth analysis and you did not disappoint! I came to an entirely different conclusion, but I very much enjoyed your interpretation! The way I saw it was that REN is someone angry at the money game and he has taken a hostage, maybe a bank manager, or a stock exchange seller, or some other person that symbolized the evil and small mindedness of one who worships money. But when it comes to him taking his vengeance on this representative of the evils of money his own words come back to him. That we are all part of the game, and if he kills his hostage he is STILL only playing into that game. That there was only one way he could truly protest against it, and that was to take himself out of the game entirely. I think that he chose fire, instead of say a hanging rope which is very much a trope ren uses for suicide. Using fire shows that he is not giving up and committing suicide, but is instead making a very profound protest of resistance, hearkening hack to the Buddhist monks protests of the 60’s. It’s meant to shock people, wake them up. That was my take…but money game 2 is even better, so don’t keep us waiting too long!

In the language of pictures, do you by any chance remember the Buddhist monk who set himself on fire?

    • @whimsysmith2835
      @whimsysmith2835 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@mellanapa - I didn’t off hand but I googled it for you. There have been over 160 Buddhist monks and nuns who have set themselves on fire in protest of various atrocities as of May 2022. That said, the specific burning monk was named Thich Quang Duc. He is the most famous, and the image of his public suicide is iconic. He burned himself in protest of the Vietnam War in Saigon on June 11, 1963. His picture was used as the cover of Rage against the Machine, and REN is clearly a fan of their music.

I'm loving watching you discover more Ren. I had a different interpretation of the video, I felt that the hooded victim is the politicians/bankers etc. and Ren wants to punish them for the money game, but realises that he is also part of the money game and punishes himself instead. I think the eyes being drawn on the hood, were Ren trying to make them see what they are doing, but when he see's their eyes it personalises them so he cant do it and realises he is also to blame. This was a single take live performance, the camera work and the planning is exceptional. I cant wait to see you react to Money game Part 2... When you do react to Money game part 2, go for the official lyric video, not the acoustic version because the acoustic version is much shorter... The acoustic version is still great, but it is just spoken word live on a beach with no musical accompaniment, and it is only the second part of the song.. Ren is a gift...

Thank you ❤ for your Ren - Money Game, Pt. 1 reaction! That was a very intriguing analysis!
The triple-time lines you could not make out clearly are:
There's an irony in freedom, because us in the west
We have pillaged and plundered and murdered like savages
Colonised all of the rest, that's called hypocrisy
Preach a certain value that you'd never keep yourselves
If your country was in flames, you'd emigrate yourselves in a second
    - - - - -
    Money Game
    Strange times we're living in
World can put fear in ya
Hierarchy parties, they make us feel inferior
Greed runs through the parliament interior
Devils walk among us, they fit the criteria
Eerie theories strike fear in weary minded men
When we're clearly living in dictatorships
Nearly blinded by illusions to choose
    But who's fooling who?
A ball chained to your shoes
    I'm pained, it's a crying shame
The pursuit of our own wealth lights a flame
That makes greed a game that lets the whole world burn
As the world turns, the whole world burns
    Money was invented for trade
But now those bits of paper twist hearts, make slaves
Turns a saint into a sinner, a child into a killer
His finger on the trigger of a money game
    Oh, rain, rain, rain, rain
A storm, it comes our way
And those who rise through distorted lies
    Poison in the veins
But we like to point the blame, blame, blame, blame
    It's easier to blame
But point the mirror at ourselves
We're all part of this old money game
    This old money game
    This old
Dear Mr. President, it's evident that everyone's a resident
Of fear when they support the ideas that keep us separate
When they make us believe that everybody
Is coming to terrorise you in the streets
They say proudly through gritted teeth
"It's my right to hate, that's freedom of speech!"
When did freedom become a reason to hate?
A way to justify a racial slur or insult we make
There's an irony in freedom, because us in the west
We have pillaged and plundered and murdered like savages
Colonised all of the rest, that's called hypocrisy
Preach a certain value that you'd never keep yourselves
If your country was in flames, you'd emigrate yourselves in a second
Still, you spit your venom, demonising immigrants
    When really, you're an immigrant
'Cause all of us are immigrants
    Or descended from immigrants
The irony is imminent, I'll shed the light on immigrants
    America was colonised by Britain
Britain, it was colonised by Rome
    Also, colonised by the Saxons
They were German, by the way
You know how people throw shade upon the Germans
    'Cause of history's pain
And yet we make the same mistakes all again
Demonise a whole people, Jewish or Muslim the same and the same
    Old situations play on repeat
The same old TV shows repeat
    Yeah, we worship the bleak
Our opinions aren't our own and we follow like sheep
There's no left, there's no right
    In the middle we sleep
    Rain, rain, rain, rain
A storm, it comes our way
And those who rise through distorted lies
    Poison in the veins
But we like to point the blame, blame, blame, blame
    It's easier to blame
But point the mirror at ourselves
We're all part of this old money game
    This old money game
    This old money game

I'm glad you finally made it here. I have not yet watched your response but I am excited to hear it.
My take on this video is.
The kidnapped individual was a 'defendant' in a 'trial' with the psychotic Ren accusing him and acting as Judge/Jury/Executioner. Ren's character, through the song, goes on to explain the individual's crime: being part of a money game - a twisted game where people are divided and suffering for the sake of wealth. People who are willing to exploit their peers get ahead, and other are forced to do bad things for survival.
Each time he gets close to exacting punishment and killing his victim, he stops to continue explaining more ways we twist our lives for that wealth. He even symbolically draws eyes on the head sack to signify that the victim isn't blind to it: the captor has 'opened his eyes'. He has no excuse and deserves this punishment of death.
Finally, with one final attempt to do the deed, Ren's character realized the futility of what he's doing. Looking in the mirror, as per the lyrics, he is also part of the money game. And so, he puts aside his holier attitude and burns himself to death instead.
As he said, as assuredly as the whole world turns while playing this game, the whole world burns as well.
This 1 take video took 186 takes to get the one they were looking for...
Edit: 1:46 Into this video and I am already impressed and this is why I couldn't wait to hear from you on this one.
Last edit: Absolutely masterful! I KNEW you would love this one. Chilling review. I cannot disagree with anything you said.

The 186 takes is a but of a myth. Ren said it as a deliberate exaggeration. But for sure a lot of takes

I don't think this is A) a character Ren plays, nor B) him being "psychotic".
As in other songs by him he makes it pretty clear what he think of capitalism. See for example Sick Boi and The Hunger: there's no "hinting" or "nudge nudge"-ing with Ren.

I was looking forward to your take on this and you didn't disappoint! I envy your speed of thought and ability to express yourself so eloquently. I've really struggled to get my head round this but having just read the lyrics it seems to me like the first part is about how money has been corrupted from it's original use and how we are all conditioned to be pawns in the game where money is the main driving force in our lives. The second part is how easy it is to get people to turn against each other by exaggerating our differences rather than seeing how similar we are. This diverts attention away from those running and profiting from the 'money game'. I'm still not totally clear on the symbolism of the characters. I see your point about the captive and captor but I think Ren also acts as a narrator, explaining the 'money game'. The quality and diversity of his work is just captivating. Look forward to you doing 'Money Game Part 2', the lyric version is the full length one , the live version is just the second part but beautifully filmed and performed so worth a look too!

Matt, thank you, _thank you_ for your contribution to the analysis of Ren's music. If you struggle with the rapid parts, he usually posts the lyrics in the comments below each music video - and if he didn't, some other dedicated soul took it upon themselves to transcribe the lyrics. You could try to load those up on your handheld so you can glance at it simultaneously?
Also, another 'tender' spot for most Renegades is when reactors pause a video and don't roll-back a few seconds before resuming. Some don't care, but most do; and not for themselves, but mostly out of a sense of anxiety that *you* might miss something integral to the experience.
edit: I've come back to thank you once again - your analysis has helped my own understanding of this track immensely! I was always a little perplexed by the symbolism of this track but your interpretation makes so much sense to me so _thank you_ . There is a strong visual parallel in the beginning of this video to the shocking scene in Childish Gambino's own "This is America" (which for your personal enrichment I would recommend you check-out). Note that Ren is on the right, while Donald Glover is on the left of the 'victim'. If you consider the hooded victim as though it were the Atlantic ocean, then Donald, in the US, uses a gun, while Ren, in the UK, uses 'finger guns' since guns have been banned in the UK for decades... Just food for thought.

I agree with your analysis ..... except i came up with the opposite character representation. The captive was ftom the money game elite playing the tune we all dance to. Ren was the people wanting to destroy the system. He keeps explaining all the fallacies. But can't finish the job. Once the captive has eyes,Ren turns the mirror on himself and realizes he is part of the game and takes himself out in protest
The image that came to my mind was the Buddhist monk during the Vietnam war that immolated himself in protest to what was happening.
Probably both of our views would be valid .

Even the poor in America are elite compared to the world economy. How often do we look around the home and give even so much as a silent blessing to those that picked our coffee beans, or mined the ores for our machines, slaved for our food and clothing? We too are part of the money game. And we are outrageously blessed.

This is becoming a highlight to my week. Your analysis is always so intelligent and spot on with the way I perceive the content. I've watched a lot of other reactions that get stumped hard on this one and you just breezed right through. Excellent work! Saw a comment about the immigration part and how you skipped by it. I'll be honest before watching this my thought on immigration was very staunch. Being a native of Arizona and seeing the toll it takes on our state you realize it's a big problem but after watching this I've opened my stance on it a bit. It's a double edged sword. It's not good for the way of life I'm accustomed too but there is also large groups of people that are displaced and living a much tougher life than me and looking for a way out. Essentially this is my part in the money game. I've grown up in a world where the peramiters have all been set by the money game and I have been confined within it. The powers that be have separated us and divided us and set up borders all around us. How do I and all of us break these chains and somehow salvage the good points of our current way of living. Admittedly its beyond me but this video and song have at least opened me up and made me more aware of it so I dont slip and further. Anyway keep up the great work, as others mentioned part 2 do the lyric video and after I'd love to see your interpretation of Crutch by Ren ft. Bibi. Thanks again!

    • @BustingtheBox
      @BustingtheBox  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

The problem with illegal immigration is that while we may feel sympathy on a human level, the reality is that we can have a nation state with advanced social programs, or we can have an open society with open borders, but it's impossible to have both.

This is an excellent start in my humble opinion: stop, listen, think again, re-think, revaluate if needed (which it almost always thee case for all of us), and keep your mind open for different solutions, different angles of how to view the world, and you're on the right way. It takes some guts to admitting that you might have been stuck in a loop created by your own mind, and upon that admitting it to yourself! 🖤

I´m 60, vet and fully in line with Rens perception of the World. His next level talents and efforts to spread awareness has earned him my unlimited respect and gratitude.
Observing where the World is heading - public ignorance and apathy doesn`t bode well for the future. I side with increased awareness but contemplating public awareness, Big M, corruption and unregulated development/usage of AI/robotics and what it can cause I'm concerned. At times a vulcanic super eruption or two almost seems to offer a preferable solution.
🤞and hoping the best for humanity.

When I first saw this video my thought was that when the power figure played by Ren put a face on the the captive, he for the first time realized this is a person just like himself - and the lines about we are all immigrants at one time or another etc kind of backed that up . Then I thought ok so the power character realized he cannot kill the ‘ other ‘ but someone has to die and since he is just as or even more guilty than the captive so he destroys himself . Your take on the meaning of the last part where the captive raises up the guitar in protest was the first time any reactor or comment had mentioned that- that was cool. ❤ from Canada
