    One of the most insightful commentaries on Sherlock Holmes that I have ever heard.

    "I... kinda like Sherlock Holmes" - really, I wouldn't have noticed? 🤣
    Wow, what a collection.
    I've listened to the complete Sherlock Holmes audible collection, narrated by Stephen Fry 😍 such a steal and just wonderful.

      Aye, but let's be honest, you cannae read audio books. :)
      But, of course i like Christopher Lee's and even Vincent Price's horror stories.
      I guess we'd better enjoy being a reader than being the audience. :)

    Some read for the pleasure of the familiar, some read for the pleasure of the singular. And, some have a foot in both plots. Thanks for another stimulating video. I do hope you return to Holmes, on many occasions, to explore the depths of these narratives.

    I love your video.
    I grew up on his stories.
    They definitely make us act with
    a lot of kindness for everyone.
    It’s such a joy to revisit this absolutely
    flamboyant man.
    So real as if he is still with us.
    Your love for Sherlock Homes has
    him alive once more.
    Thank you for doing what and how you connect through the media.

    I too have enjoyed all the canon of Sherlock Holmes stories. I think one thing that resonates with me is that in Holmes’s world, people are somewhat predictable in the actions that they will take. A reporter taking in more money as a sympathetic beggar than his reporter’s salary, for example, will become the beggar.
    I never got to employ any level of inciteful logic on people, but back when I worked as a software coder and tester, that was the arena in which I could apply logic to determine the causes of anomalies. Those were my Sherlock Holmes moments.

    Great video. I completely agree with you that when people come up with the theories about Holmes being in love with Irene Adler or Watson that they are just projecting. Great collection of the various editions!

    I've loved Sherlock Holmes since we were assigned to read "The Hound of the Baskervilles" in the 6th grade. Now, I read tons of Holmes pastiches all the time.... Great analysis, Michael. At the heart of it, it is the Holmes/Watson relationship that hooks you. You know, Londoners were wearing black arm bands in mourning after Doyle killed off Holmes. I would like to have seen more of Mycroft in the original stories, but he sure appears in the pastiches. Baring-Gould has a great theory that Holmes was the father of Nero Wolfe. I love that!

    Why do I love Sherlock Holmes? Because its amazeballs, thats why! I refuse to read or watch any spinoffs or modern retellings. Only original Sherlock Holmes will do! Accolades to Sir Doyle! If you ever get the chance, the London Sherlock Holmes house is completely wonderful! Looks just like you'd picture it in the book! So wonderful!

    I first read Sherlock Holmes as a teenager and didn't like the book and then read him as an adult and loved him, read them twice as an adult and want to read them again. I loved the old Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone.

    I compare the evolution of Sherlock Holmes to the evolution of Mr. Spock in Star Trek. From cold and emotionless to an emotional, caring figure. Like Holmes he was killed off and resurrected.

      You are right, that is exactly what he was doing at the moment of the meeting. Watson was just told about the corpses being beaten by Stamford. I realized I didn’t make this clear after I finished the video but thought...oh, nobody will catch that anyway. Ha, you showed me!

    • @michaelk.vaughan8617

      Jeremy Brett was, by far, the best Sherlock Holmes on screen. I do like Basil Rathbone quite a bit though.

      @@michaelk.vaughan8617 Basil's depiction was aided by the black & white atmospheric quality of the old movies. I will have to check Jeremy's renditions.

    I think we just have to be careful and not confuse Doyles' absolute canon and the BBC version. My other favorite character in these books are brother Mycroft. How I would like to meet him ! Can you even imagine poor Momma Holmes trying to put up with those two boys ? (This is the time when we are glad they are fictional)

    • @michaelk.vaughan8617
      @michaelk.vaughan8617  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, you might be referring to Sherlock beating those corpses! In the story Watson was only told about this by Stanford before he actually met Holmes. Holmes was actually working on perfecting a blood test at the actual moment of meeting. I realized later that I never made this clear during my video. I would never disrespect the absolute canon!

    • @Leebearify
      @Leebearify 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelk.vaughan8617 Never fear !!! I KNEW you wouldn't LOL. I was mostly reminding others because the BBC's versions were awfully good (Moffat is an amazing writer). The Collected works was the first book I ever purchased as a teenager. It was hard cover and I saved for, what seemed like, an eternity! It finally fell apart last year after serving some 40 years. LOL !!
