I challenge anyone to watch this and not smile at the fun that The Apprentice and his friend are having. Nice project Marc, I'm a little disappointed that my nieces are too old to enjoy something like this. I'll have to find some other projects to do with them.
Had my two and a half year old in the shop with me a few weeks ago to build mom a bird house, and he shot a pin nail directly through my thumb! LMAO Had to pull it through with some pliers! I still love him! Great to see Mateo in the shop with you!
Great project for you son and very inspirational to all parents. We stopped buying toys from the shops (except Lego) for our boys when they was very young and told them "you can have any toy you like", when we got home we would make that toy with them (from wood, paper, lego, whatever). As the years have gone by, they now look at thinks that inspire them to go and make. They get the satisfaction of making something they want and will play with them till their hearts content, and if it breaks they know how to fix it.
Very cool. I'm sure Mateo and his little friend will enjoy those for a long time, just because they helped. The whole litigious thing is a bummer, though.
Wonderful pull toy!!!! loved how you let Matteo paint it himself and honored his 3yr old workmanship. Some grownups would have tried to paint it "perfect" and that's not right. SAFETY TIP as a mom of three and grandma of three, if the toy is going to be in a household with babies or smaller children use googly eyes that can screwed or nailed in tightly into the wood and be sure the bells cannot come off the antennae. Many craft glues are made for decorative application and wood glue doesn't bond well to non-wood surfaces like the plastic back of eyes so the small parts can fall off creating a choking hazard for babies. If it can or does fall off, crawling babies have a homing instinct that will find it, guaranteed. Meanwhile I hope you consider a section of family fun projects that can grow with children's ages and skill level. Call it family time or legacy building.
Awesome. Winner. I built a sit on airplane for my grandson out if wood with fiberglass reinforcement. This is something we can do together. Thank you. Perfect
Thanks Marc for this great project. I took some scrap 2x4's and built two of these little critters, one for my new nephew and another for my neighbors son. These will be great Christmas gifts.
GREAT VIDEO, WHAT A COOL THING TO SHARE WITH YOUR SON. I WISH MY DAD HAD A COOL WOOD SHOP WHEN I WAS GROWING UP THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME. THE GRASSHOPPERS TURNED OUT COOL TOO. THIS IS WAY BETTER THAN ELECTRONIC DEVICES THEY ACTUALLY GET TO PLAY AND CREAT WITH THERE HANDS. GOOD STUFF.
Such a great project. I made a walking duck toy very similar with my grandpa when I was a kid. 20 years later, I know exactly where it is and it works perfectly. Can't wait to do these with my nephew!
Great project to get you Son involved, even if it was just painting, He will get the Joy of Playing with it for years to come, knowing it was built with Dad, Thanks for sharing, Looks Great !
I see a build day for kids at your workshop in your future Marc. I doubt you will recall, but I sent you a Facebook message that you replied to, congratulating you on your son's birth. The only reason I remember is because it was right around my youngest being born and it seems like yesterday. Man does it go quick. Happy to see your family is well and keep up the good work!
Great video Marc, I don't have any little ones of my own but I do have a few friends with kids who I'm sure would love this,so thanks for the idea and how to.
Wow, He's 3 already!?! He's like Marc with Blond hair and more cuteness. My son and I made a pull along frog when he was about 2 (he's 4 now). He STILL tugs that thing around the house. I used some spare Red Oak and coated it with a two-part table top "glaze" (hard as a rock and waterproof), so it's holding up just fine. "Froggy" even does bath time and swimming during the summer. When scratches do happen, I just pull out the heat gun and give it a once over to remove the scratches. Super low maintenance.
You said there was no metal on this project...... I cracked up laughing when I saw the metal washers.. You were just making sure we were still watching..... :-) Nice build man!
That's crazy that you feel you need to cover yourself with the disclaimer, I hope it's just to be on the safe side and that it's not from a previous bad experience! Kids toys rule, nicely done!
Great project, thank you for the idea. My boy is 3 years old as well. :) I think I will use a hole saw to make the wheels, not sure where to buy them here in Lithuania ;)
I know what you mean Peter. I really wanted to make a third to finish up with a clear coat. Would have looked awesome. But I only had enough stock for two and used them both for the kids. :)
I HERE THAT, I BUILD CUSTOM GUITARS AND MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER WANTS TO HELP ALL THE TIME BUT I USE TOXIC, EXOTIC WOODS AND DANGEROUS TOOLS AND MACHINES SO UNTIL SHE CAN FIT IN A DUST MASK, GOGGLES, AND HERING PROTECTION I ONLY INVOLE HER IN THE SKETCH UPS. I TRY TO FIND SAFE THINGS SHE CAN DO BUT SHE IS STUBBORN LIKE ME AND WANTS TO ACTUALLY BUILD GUITARS HAHA. I CAN'T WAIT TIL WE CAN DO THAT TOGETHER. I WOULD DO A PROJECT LIKE THIS WITH MY GIRLS BUT THEY ARE ALREADY SPOILED WITH COMPUTERS THAT THEY THINK ITS BORING. OH WELL ITS ALL ABOUT FAMILY TIME ANYWAY AND WE ALWAY HAVE FUN.
I guess people get used to dealing with inches, but cm and mm makes work so much more enjoyable for me. It's fine while the number you are dealing are 1/2'' or 1/4'', but it's tougher when you move to numbers like 11/16. By the end of the video my head was spinning. Cool project though and congratulations for involving your son.
Looks like fun . . . for me and for my grandson. One problem. I can't find 1-3/4 in. wood for the center piece. 2 x 4s are only 1-1/2 in. thick. So far, I haven't been able to find a board that is actual size 2 in. x 4 in. If I go to 4 in. x 4 in., it's all treated wood which I don't want to use.
Nice project. My children are too old for this, but perhaps one day I will be a grandfather. :) Very good instead of wax is graphite powder. Just use the remains from the bottom of a pencil sharpener box and rub it to the moving parts.
Great project Mark, looks like you had the most fun, always wondered about those disclaimers, do you think someone would actually try to sue you had you not mentioned all that?
+thewoodwhisperer i made one of these for my boys first bday, didnt add the stuff that vould come off for choking hazard purposes lol. I have a 13 year old too, and if id like to make him something, hes into sports, specificly football, and hunting, any projects you know of like this?
Beautiful! But you loose me with all the inches and 11/4s. It must be three times harder to be a woodworker in the us than in the eu just because the extra steps.
@@woodwhisperer Not to start the argument over what is better, I'm just taught in the other system. We always talk in milimeters and all drawings are in mm. I've never had to do with the american inch (i have with the swedish inch when buying wood) but it just seems to me that a kid might have a longer learning curve since they have to figure out what 1/32 is compared to 1/8. Instead of counting 1-2-3-4 in millimeters.
Well this is something that's taught to children at an early age. By the time those children become woodworkers, the time is already invested. So that's why I say it's not harder to be a woodworker in the US because we already speak the language. No doubt, metric is simpler. But US standard doesn't really make woodworking "harder."
Well to be fair, I've been using the GRR-Ripper for at least 6 or 7 years. :) Here's a video I did back in 2011 that you might like. www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/get-a-grip/
If you don't have one, GET one. ... or two. A friend got one as a gift and I laughed at it. He convinced me it was worth it and I purchased one. I have never looked back. After 9 years of use, mine is a bit worn, with quite a few nicks and cuts in it (saved fingers perhaps?) and I am looking to replace it. I will never do another project without it.
great project! im going to check my scrap bucket and make some of these for the kids. im sure they will enjoy the painting and assembly (and of course, playing with the finished project)
Cool project but grass Hoppers legs dont move like they are walking grass Hoppers jump using both legs at once so for a more realistic movement the wheels shouldnt be rotated the 180 degrees they child both have the same hopping movement
That would be incorrect good sir. Well, for a walking grasshopper, that is. And my grasshoppers are walking, not hopping. But don't take my word for it. Watch a grasshopper walk. :) Florida's Giant Orange Grasshopper - TH-cam HD
I have to say, this project had a WWMM feel to it. Just an observation, but maybe you TH-camrs are watching each others videos and being influenced subconsciously. :)

I am in love with this toy. I am going to try to make it as soon as I feel better
Nice Marc! Excellent project, and anytime we can include our kids, the project is better for it!
Totally agree. I love my time in the shop but I can't remember the last time I had that much fun making something so simple!
God bless your family! They are precious!

OMG, Marc. Mateo is adorable!
Great project. My 20 month old loves being in the shop with dad as well, and this will be a great project for him.

Love love love... Now I just need a little one to make it for... Thanx for all you do sir.
Great to see a different style video. Love the grasshopper toy and i am sure your son will enjoy building future toys with you as well.
Coolest Dad award goes to you.
One of the many reasons I can't wait to start having kids with the wifey. Thanks for sharing!

Nice project. It is really rewarding doing projects with your children and some day as in my case with your grandchildren. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful toy. Now I have to make three for my great grand daughters. Thank you.
As usual, a great video. It was so nice to see a father so involved with his son's development. A really big well done.
Nice video boy did he grow fast don't seem like 3 yrs. has passed that fast.
Thanks,
Roland
Very cool! I plan to do this with my daughter.
Very nice project and a great way to introduce the tykes to woodworking!
Awesome Project Marc. I really like the project end-to-end and agree that it is frustrating that disclaimers are needed. You handled that well :)
Cool Project, My Grandson just turned 3, and I been on the hunt for some toy projects to build for him.
Grate work !!! I Will built one for my kid and one for me, thanks, please upload mor toy videos!
Great lil project ....keep them coming
You said there was no metal on this project...... I cracked up laughing when I saw the metal washers.. You were just making sure we were still watching..... :-) Nice build man!
I think those were just for setting the dowel length, and we're not used in final assembly.
Thanks for sharing, that is such a cute project!
That's crazy that you feel you need to cover yourself with the disclaimer, I hope it's just to be on the safe side and that it's not from a previous bad experience! Kids toys rule, nicely done!
Hey Mark I read the forward that you wrote in Charles Neil's finishing, simply put. Nice job bud I liked it.
Wow, great project and from my perspective... outstanding production and video editing!
Thanks man!
Great project and video
cool! looks like everyone had a blast!! thanks
Great project Mark. When I first started woodworking, some of my favorite projects were Wooden Toys.
Great video, I actually just downloaded the plans for this, my niece is a bit young still, but at least it will be ready when she is!
Jeez Marc, the boy has grown!!
watching this for a dt project thanks for the cool idea
Hi M, Great project me and my wife are going away to make a little right now so I can make this project ,keep up the good work

Great project Marc, I have a 8 1/2 month old son so I'm very interested in any kids projects that I could make for/with him eventually!
Thanks
Very good project!
Great project, I like it.
So great! Absolutely love this project! But dear god man, HOW MANY CT DUST EXTRACTORS DO YOU NEED?! 5+?!
Great project, thank you for the idea. My boy is 3 years old as well. :)
I think I will use a hole saw to make the wheels, not sure where to buy them here in Lithuania ;)
awesome!! simply awesome.
Fun project! I have such a hard time not being the overbearing dad "Are you sure that's how you want to paint it?" Well done, just rolling with it...
I know what you mean Peter. I really wanted to make a third to finish up with a clear coat. Would have looked awesome. But I only had enough stock for two and used them both for the kids. :)
The Wood Whisperer I think they look great the way they are:)

great video i would love to see more like this
very good this video, I will make one.
Great. I will need to build one of these for the grandson
P.S. How do you keep your workshop so dust free?
very nice video
Newbie question here. Did you use pine for the project? Will that be heavy enough to pull correctly and not fall over?
I guess people get used to dealing with inches, but cm and mm makes work so much more enjoyable for me. It's fine while the number you are dealing are 1/2'' or 1/4'', but it's tougher when you move to numbers like 11/16. By the end of the video my head was spinning. Hello! What do you use on the antennas?
good job
Very Cool project Mark, It's amazing how fast they grow enjoy it :-)
Great project Mark, looks like you had the most fun, always wondered about those disclaimers, do you think someone would actually try to sue you had you not mentioned all that?
Let's just say I don't want to find out.
Awesome !!!!!
Very cool. I can do this with my little bug also :)
My son died when he made his.....from pure joy!
+thewoodwhisperer i made one of these for my boys first bday, didnt add the stuff that vould come off for choking hazard purposes lol. I have a 13 year old too, and if id like to make him something, hes into sports, specificly football, and hunting, any projects you know of like this?
Nice
Adorable :)
what wood did u use?
Pretty sure we have the same wedding band
Platinum? I am not a fan of gold and wanted to keep it simple. Platinum sounded good to me. :)
you are a super!! dad make some more
What do you use for the antenna?
Pipe cleaners
love it!! But dude can you do it in mm ha ha ha Also i really dont blame you for saying that disclaimer!!
d&t lesson for secondary school
Can you send me dimensions, please?
Ya. Cameo from Mateo!
Beautiful! But you loose me with all the inches and 11/4s. It must be three times harder to be a woodworker in the us than in the eu just because the extra steps.
Nope. Is it any harder to speak a language you learned as a child? It’s only confusing because you don’t know it.

it is a shame that you have to give a safety disclaimer...

bloody imperial....
Yeah but how often do grassHOPPERS walk? If they walked they would be called grass walkers
