About the dyslexia issue, the game design should have absolutely accomodated for that. Some ways to do this I can think of is letting you zoom into text/pages or popping-up a screen with standard, customisable, non-pixel text when you push a button. I've also noticed some of the text is edging close to the page colour, which could make it blend in more than needed. I'm also annoyed when too many games choose style over substance in their UI design. Accessability should be king here. While it's in my head as I'm typing out this comment, Game Maker's Toolkit's Designing for Disability series is a good watch for learning how to apply accomodations for many different types of disabilities. LauraKBuzz makes a lot of videos concerning disability and game design as well.
I became a fan of this game relatively quick once I got the hang of, maybe its my love for completing multiple tasks and ticking them off that got me to love it that much cuz with every passpord I had a unique flow going through with everyone haha, I understand why people would find it difficult tho, great podcast episode you too!
Props to you both for calling out and normalising accessibility in this and previous games. I'm shocked they're isn't a place to go to check accessibility for games. Most other forms of media have this recognise it and have standards in place
I enjoyed this game and my partner also played this game and really liked it. Great video as always, was interesting seeing both of your views. Thank you 🙏
Funny that I was just binge-watching a bunch of my favorite play-throughs of this again after I finished it myself again. Love this game. 28:18 this is an interesting discussion to have, and if I may, I have my own tidbit of history on this. When the game came out, if you got a citation for a discrepant assigned sex on the passport, the wording was “invalid gender.” This has since changed. Now, a citation for the same thing reads “invalid sex”. I appreciate that the developer took the time to add that in, because before it kind of felt like “oh, your gender is wrong, you have this assigned sex so you should look this way and you don’t, so I’m going to detain you for it”, but I think that change of wording in particular helps me to look past it a little bit. It’s also nice that sometimes the person’s sex was actually what they said it was, despite immediate outward appearances, which I think also says something about the way the game wants to handle gender identity. It might feel a bit uncomfortable at times but ultimately I think that’s what the developer was going for.
This is perhaps a bandage solutiona t best, but the playthrough I watched and adapted when I played, if I couldn't glance at a name quickly enough, I would just check it through the discrepancy meter, and if the game said it matched, it was fine. It doesn't fully solve that problem of dyslexia, which is really fair and is something I hadn't considered either, but it might help. And I do completely get your mindset of trying to match the impact and concept of the game with your enjoyment. For me, watching jacksepticeye's funny series on it beforehand helped my enjoyment of it just because he was funny, so I'm curious how my opinion would change if I had just picked it up for myself without a Let's Play. Great episode - glad you guys touched on Jorji, my favorite character - seems like a lot of people's! Glory, greatest country!
Ayyy my question got in, thanks guys! It totally slipped my mind but yeah the OST (all, like, three songs lol) AND the sfx are so good, the little clicks and voices and the stamp sound will forever be imprinted on my mind like *EEEEHHH EUUUUU* (NEXT!) *eh euh* (Papers, Please) *eruh* (I waited 3 days in this line, this better be worth it) *cachunk* (into inspection mode) *detdetdet.....dededededeeet* (DISCREPENCY DETECTED) *chacunk* (out of inspection mode) *eh euh* (These documents are forged) *eruh* (I don't know what you're saying) *badawunk EECK EECK EECK rrrrrrruuunnnnp* (detain, shutter down) *eruh* (What is happening?) ... *GESHTALT!* (OUT!) ... *EEEEHHH EUUUUU* (NEXT!)
Have either of you played Return of the Obra Dinn? It was also made by Lucas Pope, but the only thing they really share is the artstyle. Edit: I just reached the part where you mentioned it, I suppose I should have been more patient to comment. Either way, I would still reccommend it.
Yeah i can imagine the dyslexia issue making it very hard to enjoy this game for people that have it. I do think this game is very good though, so cool to see you guys cover it!
Joe and Oli I didn't even know thus chanel existed. Joe you should really promote this channel more because I thohght you werent on TH-cam at all any more!!! Glad you're still making vids together ❤❤
I think standard mode is definitely the better way to experience the game, since a lot of the desicions you make is based on the desperation of not having enough money, and wether you choose to act immorally or not in order to feed your family. It is a really hard game on the first playthrough though, you probably won't get a good ending your first time around. If you want a good ending on your first playthrough the easiest bet would probably just be to play until you get the gist and then start a new game and capitalize off the first few easy days in order to build up your wealth.
Big shame about the Dyslexia issue, especially because I did think this would be a game Joe in particular would really enjoy. This video really challenged the format of the list though but I think a fair enough placement was found!
This isn't entirely relevant but this game reminds me of the game mentioned in a book called "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow". The game they describe is you are working in a factory and you can choose to continue being ignorant or start asking questions and as you go through the game you realise you are a part of nazi Germany and are increasingly questioning you morales, being forced to make harder and harder decisions. To my knowledge this game doesn't actually exist but I think its an incredible demonstration of the use of games as art and statements rather than simply entertainment.
Another great episode. Everything you said about the gender stuff and dyslexia stuff is super true. Accessibility options would have been a great feature if implemented in the right way. Maybe more visual stuff like VR (which Oli mentioned) would work. It’s sad that the lack of these features can affect enjoyment. In my opinion, I think that the game wasn’t meant to be enjoyed. The environment is something that makes you not want to be there and the job you do is awful. What is weird about my experience is that I don’t 100% games. Maybe it was also the factor of me being sick with nothing to do to have a little project. Such an interesting conversation and looking forward for all future eps 💜
