Who the fuck has so much time to shit over the WIntersun when you get 3 HQ albums, instrumental versions, vocals versions and a bunch of other crap for only 50€ ?! It's not like you pay them to shove that money up their asses.
If you really think they are going to fuck you then don't buy or donate anything... simple as that.
I personally believe what they're saying, so i bought that 50€ bundle.
I simply trust a band that has released nothing but pure masterpieces in the past and from what i've heard the future stuff is going to be just as good if not better.
Fuck if i can waste 50€ of some crappy shoes or on some dumb PC game then giving that to a band that i enjoy listening to won't be such a bad deal, especially when i'll be getting many cool items in return.

Agreed. I don't understand how you can dislike Wintersun's ambitions, especially considering we'll be able to get albums faster, they'll have their own headquarters from which to record new music, and maybe this is also a stepping stone for other metal bands to get more out to audiences. I don't know how it would go if other bands try to do this, but it certainly opens doors.

It's $50 for a new album, a live album, remastered versions of the two older albums, and an acoustic single. For someone who's a big fan and who BUYS MUSIC, this is a great deal. The old days of the music industry are dead. Very dead. There will be no more Metallicas. Bands have to find ways to survive and thrive. Wintersun has a loyal fan base. They will make success happen.

      Agreed.
That is the whole point of crowd-funding.
Regardless of the industry. If you wanted funds for a tech startup you either had to get yourself a VC or HedgeFunds, but loads of Tech Startups turned to Crowd-Funding.
So Wintersun, yes I get why some fans are pissed cause it is not just for recording an album.
They actually do not need a studio to go without a record label.
Take the money rent the studio without the funds from the Record Label.
So why a studio? Cause why not! Damn awesome for them, this is the point of crowd-funding, together you can achieve more, so this allows us to cut out the top guys who will over-price their services and products, just to keep bands in debt.
This is the whole reason the world is a bit messed up, too many industries, actually every industry can be exploited by just a few.
Well done Wintersun, I would love to see more bands with their own studios in the future.

You don't really get it either. I wish many of my former favourtie bands quit 10 years ago, instead of making crap album after crap album and tarnish their sound to make a living/go through the motions. It's all explained in the documentary videos. They never demanded money from THEIR LABEL. The label was denying them the ability to do a crowdfunding for years. Have you seen Jari's humble place he tried to make Time I? He's far too talented to be working in such conditions, and he already has a massive amount of material ready to be recorded to make up for the long silence.

    1. Nuclear Blast had already paid them to record the album and so they recorded it.
    2. They then held their finished album hostage until they met their financial goal for a new recording studio
    3. For $50.00 you get files for your donation (big fucking deal....files)
In closing...they wanted to build their own studio, so they squeezed funds from their fans. Nuclear Blast even, somewhat, addressed the situation saying "we don't understand why they have a go-fund-me to finance a finished album...". You really left out some key points there buddy.

people need to dig deeper to understand the purpose of the crowdfunding. jari has wanted a studio since 2004. this money will be spent towards making their own studio, so that their composing and producing will get easier (at least for jari's perfectionist perspective), which should lead to more releases happening more often.
also, most of the disliking that they're getting is from idiotic people who are basically thinking that albums and music in general should be free, that the artists don't need the money. THAT is something that quite honestly irritates me. and this is just a general problem with the world nowadays. no one is paying the musicians their rightfully earned payment. besides, in this wintersun case, the 50€ package contains the debut album (10-20€ in stores, not via fucking downloading or what have you), time 1 (20€ in stores), a live dvd 10-30€ in stores), the new album (20-25€ in stores), separated tracks for each instrument on the new album and a digital booklet with 30 pages (if i remember correctly, might be under or over thirty).... anyway, the package value goes WAY beyond the 50€ mark, so i honestly don't understand how these so-called fans even dare mope about the package. i honestly don't get it. the again, i'm one of the weirdos who still collects physical copies of albums instead of using spotify or what have you (i will admit that spotify is handy though, but it sucks for the industry), and i also still believe that musicians deserve to get paid properly.
not trying to patronize people (at least not too harshly), but i personally think that this crowdfunding idea is amazing.

    • @COBfan1996
      @COBfan1996 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

doesn't cost that much...? oh really, now? think again :D
simply buying the property will cost from anywhere to a 100k € to 300k €, based on the fact that i highly doubt that he'd settle for a 40 square meter piece of land for a high quality studio, not to even mention that he will likely want to have that studio at least somewhat near a bigger city for if nothing else, convenience sakes. and even if he wouldn't buy the whole thing, but instead just rented it, there's still the equipment. instruments are obviously not going to cost as much, since i'd figure they have most of what they need at hand already, but proper recording gear, proper mixing equipment, proper soundproofing, proper audio equipment and just in general a high quality studio will cost a lot. a high quality, complete and optimal, studio would cost anywhere around 200k to 300k in euros (from what i checked up on), easily. that's without even counting in the possible extra staff hiring, the additional equipment and the fact that this whole thing will be done in finland, where things aren't the cheapest to begin with...
then there's also the fact that jari is, as a generally known fact, a perfectionist, which in turn means that he won't be satisfied with a typical budget-sized studio with mediocre to sufficient gear.
now i agree, you're right in the sense that the thought of completing the studio with these 3 (well, now only 2) crowdfundings would be enough is a bit of a long shot, but it's doable.
but, again. i'll return to my original comment, this crowdfunding is still amazing.
also, i'd honestly love to hear, what makes you say that "a studio doesn't cost that much"? i'm honestly interested.

    • @COBfan1996
      @COBfan1996 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

true, but i actually meant that they will probably just buy an empty building and turn it into a studio, but you'd be surprised as to how much a simple empty building costs, given that they do need a fair amount of space within said building to get the optimal results. it ain't exactly cheap :D
but i do agree on the mixing thing for the most part, but it still needs to be remembered that jari is a perfectionist. unless they find used equipment that doesn't have any flaws, i don't think he'll settle for anything that would simply suffice. but, they might still get a fair bit of what they need from former studios, so there's always that possibility, which would save a lot.
and another thing i didn't count it was that they might, and probably will, get some monetary assistance with this whole operation, even outside of this funding. that would/will of course help a ton with the expenses.
a sub-message in all this is also that they do intend to take a part pf the mpney for themselves as well, since they do in fact need money for their personal lives as well, but that amount isn't within the realm of estimation for the time being.
all in all, i'd still say that their goal for this crowdfunding is quite precisely on point. if nothing else, then at least that's playing it safe ^^

I'm quite confident that Jari has already looked into the expenses of building the studio. Finland is in the top 10 most expensive countries in Europe to live in, if I remember correctly, and I think 750k sounds pretty understandable for building a high level studio in/near Helsinki. Even if they bought an already finished place, the price might still be quite high since It's in Helsinki. Hell, you can easily pay 750k for a somewhat big apartment here. I also think that 30k for Professional level acoustic treatment, mixing consoles, computers, mics and monitors +other basic studio stuff might be underestimating the costs. Not to speak of modifying the space into a studio. I'm no expert on any of these things though so maybe I'm wrong...

By the way guys, Wintersun posted teasers of their new songs (Both from Time II and The Forest Seasons I believe) on the WintersunJari youtube channel. And it sounds fucking awesome!
EDIT: Yep, the first song they play in the beginning of the video will be on Time II. The production sounds insane. I totally respect Wintersuns crowdfunding. I understand now why they want a new studio and resources so badly.

Gonna be honest, I don't give a single fuck about the controversy. I supported the crowdfunding because I like the band and the music. I also felt the package they offered was worth the money since it includes the new album, remasters of their previous albums aswell as a live album and some other goodies. All the bitching and moaning is white noise to me, I just want to hear more of their music and if they need $50 to do that then I am down, especially since I am getting good stuff in return.

Distributors, labels, merchants and other people don't have a problem with a band asking for a studio. What they even me have a problem with is 2004 first Wintersun album came out. Eight years later the next album comes out.
With all the problem he ran into all he had to do was say "OK I'm going into a studio because I need a lot to learn." So the third album is still in the works and now he is demanding Nuclear blast make him a studio? They don't have to make shit for him seeing as how long he takes.
Maybe just maybe if he just went and made the damn album and then another and another and toured and brought in money for his band and the label they would be more open to the idea.

The main gripe I have is the way Jari going about this. I enjoy Wintersun's music very much and I will spend the $10 when the album comes out in July, but the way Jari is releasing the album irks me. The album is completed, his 3rd completion without a fancy studio. But he is ready and willing to intentionally delay the release if they don't get the crazy high amount of money needed for their fancy studio? Jari also complains about being in financial trouble and how physical sales don't do help much, but how can you say that while only having 1 and a half albums released over a 13 year time span? You actually need to do some selling before you can earn money dude. I appreciate the crowdfunding thought but I feel it's too little too late. Jari had plenty of TIME to build rapport with the community and he soiled it through countless delays and now this sleazy tactic of pretending to be the victim just to get sympathy money from fans that would do anything. I think we're playing ourselves and opening the flood gates for more quasi-extortion tactics by supporting this campaign.

Insanity. That's a good word. Mixed with a (un)healthy dose of perfectionism from Jari.
The band had the recording budget from Nuclear Blast: spent, with no album to release. Whining ensues over NB "holding the music hostage" or something along those lines. Can't practice here, can't practice there, let alone record - wrong kind of electricity in the grid. Computers can't handle the ungodly amount of instrument tracks on each song. Must have an own sauna/rehearsal room/studio complex. Temper tantrums, ranting, rambling, vague posting, and heated arguments with fans on social media. Unprecedented amounts of un(?)intentional comedy. The works.
And there's still enough fanboys to back up a crowdfunding campaign that's supposed to ultimately enable the completion of Time II, the second part of an album that was originally intended to be released in its entirety in 2006... Yeah.
