    You Aussies have got some balls standing up to fires like that. My hat is off to every single one of you. Awesome stuff. Thankfully we don’t get fires like that in the uk. Well done all of you :)

      I live in Queensland, and until last year, our dry season / bushfire season was winter, when we have cool temps and calm winds. We always felt sorry for the southern states with a mediterranean climate that has wet winters and hot dry summers, meaning their fire season is in summer with high temps, low humidity and high winds... 2019/20 has been different, and we are now officially fucked as well 😨

    At 5:59 it appears only one 19mm hose line in use, should have been at least one or two 64mm lines, surely plenty of locals to help?

    • @SydneyEmergency
      @SydneyEmergency  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      There is a 38mm hose line and a high pressure reel at work, along with two civilian garden hoses. The street is located at the very end of a cul-de-sac in the far corner of the suburb and so water supply is an issue there. The locals were all being evacuated as the fire front impacted and from 3 minutes onwards the only persons in the street were the firefighters from the pumper, the resident of the end house and myself (and later the cameraman). Two 65mm lines would have been impossible to control and may have overrun the water supply, along with being impractical for the mobility required in that situation.

    • @muddydave01
      @muddydave01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I dunno if it would make much difference. You're not going to put that fire out in those conditions so the best you can do is just work it along, knocking it down to manageable radiant heat until it gets rid of the fuel for you. It seems to be mostly flank fire, They're knocking it down at the edge of the defensible zone/grass and hence cutting down the radiant heat and wetting down the house to help with that and ember control. Anything bigger than a 38 is just going to tire you out and risk the tiles until a structure is involved.

    • @aussiefirie
      @aussiefirie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The less locals "helping" the better. They're not trained and will take risks which puts crews at danger as they are too busy dealing with untrained people instead of concentrating on the fire.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The easiest way is probably just to load yourself with a massive tank of reserve water and a powerful hoose, that way you help cut the fire by soaking areas preventing the fire.
      Another alternative is that you buy yourself a digger, and dig up the soil at least a hundrede metre around your house to prevent the fire from reaching your home, obviously if wind is too strong it wont help much but if you combined both it would be a worthy investment, far cheaper than to build a house of concrete and fireproof material.

    If the fires didn't throw embers that cause spot fires, they wouldn't be nearly the threat they are. Then you could probably assign a pumper to every Km of fire front and drown it as it arrived. with a bunch of hoses pumped from a hydrant source. As it is , the spot fires catch in someones leaf pile and you lose a house before a truck can get there.

  • @longstrider2734
    @longstrider2734 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So... Im curious to know if someone else made a similar observation.
    Anyone ever refill a Zippo lighter and accidentally get fluid on your hand. When lit it Will engulf your fingers super fast but you shake your hand and the fire goes away?
    When literally the entire tree full of green leaves burned at the deep red almost purplish color and then goes back orange after the first initial engulfing. Does that not look like its an accelerant of some kind burning away. The accelerant giving the odd color of the flames. Then once its burned away the flames appear to be calm and orange again...
    This is really odd behaviour for a fire.

    • @tomkemp5
      @tomkemp5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The eucalyptus trees which make up 90% of australian forests are full of eucalyptus oil and when put under heat it vaporises and creates a flammable and gaseous cloud which ignites, hence the purplish colour, this creates enough heat to then ignite the tree, where you get the typical orange flames.

    • @ziggybadans
      @ziggybadans 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      some people like to live in the bushland. they know (or at least should know) the risks involved living there, and it's their decision. i do agree with you however that people shouldn't stay in their homes if they KNOW BEFOREHAND that the fire is going to hit them. if they didn't get information and it's too late, don't flee, as you can end up in a worse situation.

    6:47 imagine a front like that 2klms wide or more with flames peaking double the height of trees. that was Ash Wednesday 1983.... now watch the fire fighter 7:05 as he comes around the back of the truck and feels the radiant heat from that flare up.... imagine the radiant heat from bigger fire fronts. you can't fight it, you can run early, but staying can be fatal. even good fire bunkers can fail and people asphyxiated..... and i don't like the kids and residents running around like this is a tourist attraction. one wrong wind change and they'll be in an ember shower... then they expect to be saved?... just dumb bogans.

      @@SydneyEmergency You have Hydrants on scene that are being utilized. Why not elevate and extend that ladder with the preconnected pipe. Sweep those house and protect them. I bet you can protect 6 to 7 house by sweeping water onto those roofs. Your not going to knock down that fire with a small handline nor protect those structures? Why have a ladder with preconnected nozzle and pipe if you don't utilize it? Use the hand lines for mop up or if needed hitting hot spots that the ladder can't reach. Smooth bore nozzles are even a better reach if properly used.

    • @SydneyEmergency
      @SydneyEmergency  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@williamheber2118 This street was located at the very end of a small 4 inch domestic water main with very poor pressure that was just enough to keep the handlines running. Although possible, an aerial stream under that supply would be less than optimal, and combined with the strong 50mph+ winds, would be largely ineffective. Because of the urgent nature of the situation on their arrival, it would be impractical for the crew to spare the time and manpower to position and set up the ladder when they rapidly needed handlines deployed. Raising the aerial also places the crew at significant risk if conditions rapidly deteriorate and they have to leave or re deploy, because of the time it takes to bring the aerial back down and move. While ladder pipes can be effective under many circumstances, the conditions in this case simply weren't permissible. Had they been in a safer position from the fire, with more time to set up, greater manpower and a confirmed water supply, the aerial *may* have been effective, still at the mercy of the wind.
