I just came from a Smokey Robinson + the Miracles video and the difference in stage presence between the two groups is astounding. The Tempts just had 'it' and the moves to match!
The Miracles, with the exception of Bobby Rogers, the tall one with the glasses basically had no rhythm, which is why the majority of their songs were ballads.
The only 2 groups that could compare to the classic moves of the Temptations in the 1960's were the Contours and Vibrations! Yet the Contours and Vibrations were wild acts who were not smooth and sweated a whole lot on stage! The Tempts,on the other hand, were as smooth as silk and melted butter! The temptations were the greatest group in the world for several reasons: 1. Their dance choreography is so complex that most people cannot copy it and it makes them so different than anyone else. 2. Each temptation has its unique quality that makes them an integral part of the group in other words one cannot exist without the other four like Eddie with his falsetto and Paul with his dance chorepgraphy etc. 3. Although Otis Williams is considered the weakest link amongst the five by many people I think he was also the most level-headed one and tried to keep the group together best he could. Without the temptations all the other groups out there would not have something like a blueprint to model themselves under. Temptations forever.
Just to address that long thread about the Tempts vs. the Beatles. Both groups called the other "the greatest male group in the world." But their talents were very different. Those of us who actually saw the original Temptations on stage can tell you what incredible showmen they were. Brilliant performers.

Those 2 rare talents along with the unique bass of Melvin Franklin, are what truly set the Temps apart from all other groups. Eddie was a true superstar in his own right , but deferred to David's lead and phenomenal stage presence to write history. The greatest singing group of all time!!!
