    I will go with finishing a kit, I will work for a particular top and bottom thickness profiles, reset the base bar, checking it's dimensions and fit, and work on the neck and finger board. If I tried to get the domed top from scratch it would end up lopsided. I guess you start a flat board and use calipers to hit thicknesses at points throughout the top or bottom. Then hollow out the back to match another set of thicknesses.

    Really enjoy watching you make and explain in such an articulate way.
    I'm wondering which are the best books
    on this subject for beginners and to learn
    from .
    Is making a cello the same as a violin or
    is it a different technique?
    Thanks again and best wishes,
    Efriem

      Thank you so much for your message! I’m happy to hear that you enjoy watching them :)
      I’m not so sure about books, as that’s not the way I learnt. I’ve hear people talk about a good one but I honestly can’t remember it’s name. One of the only ones I read that has some information about making is the secrets of Stradivari, but that one is more informative rather than a step by step guide, so I don’t think it’s possible to make an instrument reading it. For restoration I like the weisshaar book as a starter.
      If you’re interested I made an online course a few time ago and I cover all the steps there, including plans, measurements and everything.
      lutherieacademy.com/courses/violin
      The technique for making a cello is pretty much the same yes, however if you never made a violin before I’d strongly suggest making a few of them before jumping into a cello. Unfortunately you’d only understand why after making them 😅
      Thanks again for your comment, it helps the channel a lot!

    Ciao Lucas
    Absolutely beautiful work! Moving to Northern Italy from Buenos Aires to fulfill your dream of becoming a violin maker is testament to your commitment.
    As a furniture builder, I would be interested to know how many hours went into finishing this violin, in total? From rough cutting the maple to the last smoothing of the varnish. I always find laymen completely underestimate the time required and it can be immensely beneficial to the appreciation of your work if you would note the actual time (not TH-cam time) you use. My wild guess would be 40-60 hours...? 😬
    And seeing as you love videoing your work, may I place a request that you take us out to the forest? Do you choose your own trees, hammering on them in winter to hear their sound? Or what does the lumber yard offer and how do you choose the pieces you want for a violin, vis a vis a cello, for example?
    Thanks! Keep up the truly awesome work.

      Hi!
      Sorry for the late late reply.
      Fist of all, thank you very much for your kind message :)
      Indeed, 100% commited from the beginning haha.
      Regarding the amount of hours, you're one 0 short, so add it at the end of your guess.
      It's a long long process, several months to have one made, varnished and ready to be played.
      A trip to the forest could be a great idea if I remember to take my camera with me!

    Hi, Lucas! Love this video -- I especially like listening to the difference in the sounds of the gouge on the spruce and maple. I found that there was quite a difference in feel and sound as I was carving the spruce and maple. Another thing...I'm finding it's harder to scrape the spruce cleanly...Do you find a difference in that part of the job? (Maybe I just don't know how to sharpen my scrapers very well yet. And grain direction is tricky.)

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!
      Thanks as always :)
      Eventually I'll get better mics and do something like ASMR as the sound of the tools against the wood is really beautiful by itself.
      It's really hard to scrape the spruce, so yes, the only advice I can give you is indeed to practice and sharpen the scrapers almost constantly (depends a lot on the thickness of the scraper you use too). Specially during the first "round" cleaning the inside maybe you'll work just a minute and you'll have to resharpen again, without being able to even finish an area.

    • @kathmatsushita
      @kathmatsushita 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucasFabro That's a good tip. Good to know that I'm not the only one having troubles in that area. Thanks, Lucas!

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kathmatsushita Not at all, and probably I finished the inside of at least my first 6 instruments with sandpaper, then a bit of both and eventually managed to do it only with the scrapers, but I can assure you it took some time to get the skill!

      Always showing your TH-cam support 😊
      Well, on the last violin that was an antique one the edge process is slightly different. This one will be a modern one, so the edges have to be more distinguishable I guess 🙃
      Yes, it’s this one and the next one too, so let’s see how I diversify things here for a while!

    • @Tostra1997
      @Tostra1997 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I was in my shed finally executing a five years or so plan of making an orchid/Ranitomeya vivarium. It's a fun little project which will look great in my new apartment, but I must say I much prefer wood over acrylic as a material to work with :-P
      Yes, I realize the last one was worn down some, but I just quite like your style here :-)
      Must be difficult working on different videos as well as your own, but so far I think you've managed it well.
      What is the next one? You're finishing that awesome looking Strad cello and this violin at the moment, but have you started another one too?

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tostra1997 You got the flat? That's amazing :)
      Funny enough I went to get some plants today too! I've also been planning on making something like a small Japanese garden to have in the workshop, so hopefully in the near future (that can be in 2 years) it'll happen.
      Thanks! I'm glad you like it :)
      It's very difficult, I'm not gonna lie, haha. But not just the videos, if not all the social media, emails, well...the videos of course too, and being most of the day on the workbench. But hey, it's my decision and I like it, so I'm not really complaining or anything.
      Still working on that cello, will take a bit more...you'll see in the videos :p
      I need to start varnishing this violin, and also about to start another one, a Ruggeri model, which will also be part of this project, so we'll see what I can upload here!

    • @Tostra1997
      @Tostra1997 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I got it! Nice little apartment with at-home workshop, I really can't wait! :-D
      I think having something green in the workshop is a great idea. I had a lot of aquariums some years ago, but this will take much less work. I have a lot of ideas to make it easy to maintain if you're interested. It also turned out to be very simple to build, so go ahead ;-)
      Japanese garden, like an Iwagumi thing? I really wanted to make an Iwagumi aquarium back in the days, but I couldn't keep plants for the life of me :-P
      You do have a lot going on with social networks for sure, I can imagine it's difficult. I'm really happy that I don't have a brand/image or anything to maintain on social networks, because I don't like doing it... That being said, I think you're doing great, and having that probably does help business too I imagine? Speaking for myself, I wouldn't have known you were there if it wasn't for your videos, and I'm definitely coming by if I'm ever in Cremona, if not to buy anything just to get tempted ;-)
      I can't wait for the varnish videos, you know ;-)
      Also, a Ruggieri violin sounds quite interesting! I haven't seeen a lot of those around, usually people go with more "mainstream" models.

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! When are you moving?
      Yes, I was thinking of something like that or simpler, but I wouldn’t really know where to start, and as you can imagine now I’ve got other priorities 😅
      Sooner or later though, I want to make it. Would be like making a puzzle but with more “real” things and hopefully even more relaxing.
      Believe it or not, I don’t like doing most of the social media either, but I’ve got an amazing job, can’t complain about it, and if the only thing I’ve got to do is once in a while put something on Instagram to keep everything active and then don’t do it would be silly of me and unfair for most people who are not lucky enough to have a profession like this. I mean...5 minutes to post a photo during a whole day of work enjoyment is not that bad right? Even if it can be distracting. TH-cam though, I do it more for fun.
      Hopefully I’ll finish with the varnishing videos soon (cause that means I’m done with varnishing haha).
      And yep, actually I know a lot of students who have Ruggeri instruments on loan while they study, so I thought it could be useful making an instrument with a shape they’re already familiar with (and obviously that I also really like). Sound wise I think it can be very good!

    Ciao Lucas...
    Ho notato che quando metti la colla la applichi sulla nocetta ma non sulla parte del tallone che si incolla con la nocetta... Lo fai per evitare che faccia spessore...?
    Grazie

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ciao!
      Forse non si vede sul video perché ho accorciato diverse parte per renderlo “meno lungo”, però metto la colla anche li.
      Se guardi il mio video sull’incastro si capisce molto meglio. Anche il fatto che “si fa due volte”. La “prima” volta non si incolla però si verifica come il legno beve la colla e una volta asciutto si ritocca ciò che si deve fare visto che a volte per la colla alcune parte si possono gonfiare o “deformare” un filino. Una volte rifinito l’incastro si può incollare.

    • @joesatriani7574
      @joesatriani7574 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Si certo il preincollaggio per evitare l'assorbimento eccessivo durante l'incollaggio... Ad ogni modo ho notato che alcuni (durante l'incollaggio) mettono la colla solo sulla nocetta e non nel tallone in corrispondenza della nocetta e quindi ho pensato che essendo zone con poco assorbimento mettere colla solo in un lato evita che faccia spessore...
      Ps... Quel pennello non si può guardare... 😅

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ne ho comprato un’altro infatti haha (anche se sempre di questi lunghi, quelli più corti li uso per altre cose.
      Ovviamente senza esagerare con la quantità di colla e stando molto molto attento alla temperatura che c’è nella stanza in modo che non si raffreddi troppo velocemente e in quel caso si può far spessore.
