    man, back in the day, using that blank quest sheet in the back of the book... some of the things I added, like hidden doors behind bookcases, Scooby-Doo-style, a monster rising from the sarcophagus, one of the rusty weapons on the weapon rack is a lever that reveals the hidden actual treasure... I kinda always thought they wanted to have that kind of thing, like the base game is there to spark the creativity of the players and make them want to design more elaborate ideas, as opposed to all that being "in the base game"

    • @VaultBoy13
      @VaultBoy13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ideas sound like the same ideas that are in the standard quests. It's a game that sparked imagination, but there's really nothing happening here that we can't do with most overlord dungeon crawlers.
      With the number of better overlord dungeon crawlers out there... Why not start with a better rule set that has better movement, better combat, more interesting equipment and leveling?

    I picked up an original copy from thrift store for $5 about 8 years ago in mint condition, looked liked they had never played it. My kids enjoy the simplicity of it, but I agree with Tom, you really need to incorporate house rules to make this more interesting. For us, we use a set walking pace when there are no monsters about, and the dice when there are monsters to try and make it more thematic.

    Great review! Picked this up on Amazon a few days ago because it was on a HUGE sale ($48.00)! I'll be getting it on Monday. I never played the original, but I like dungeon crawler games. I couldn't justify spending full price for it. As it is, I'll either enjoy playing it, or farm the minis for my D&D games. It's a win either way!

  • @jenius00
    @jenius00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I never played HeroQuest, but it is what got me in to Modern board gaming. Specifically, I felt like I might have missed out on something with it as a simple D&D board game experience. I read through lots of D&D books as a teenager, but never got a group together to play save for an intro game here or there. When I went back to college in my 20s I found Descent: Journey's in the Dark 1st edition. I think that also only ever hit the table once trying to keep up with the pace of my degree. But through it and my desire for a Zombie board game I discovered online a world of board gaming I didn't know existed. Now I have an absurd collection. I saw this Kickstarter and it looks like it turned out exactly as I expected. If it were me, I think I would have preferred they kept most of it cardboard. Both for the production and the nostalgia. Since I never played it, the nostalgia isn't there for me and it looks like a lot of cash and a lot of production for what the game ultimately is. I agree with others in this could have used some kind of treatment that maintained the accessability but brought it up to contemporary game design standards.

    I'm very happy that they kept the rules exactly the same. I knew what I was backing and how it would play....
    BUT...
    I'm surprised they didn't take the opportunity to keep "classic" rules, and then have an optional updated set of rules to modernize it a little bit. That would have scratched the nostalgia itch while also making it something that may hit the table more.

The next few days we went to every toy and hobby place to find our own copies and brought them home in luggage. Always mean to try them with my own kids but I don't want to ruin the nostalgia.

    This reminds me of a game I bought recently. Chronicles Of Avel. The combat, gear acquisition and exploration. It's fully COOP (so no need for someone to be the one that sets the things up). It has exploration in the form of uncovering tiles (hexagons randomly spread out), gear you can earn by buying it on a certain tile or defeating monsters, the ability to upgrade that gear by performing an action on another tile or (again by defeating certain monsters).
    The dice combat works similarly, although thanks to the system of upgrading the items it allows for a bit more depth (a gear piece for instance can give you a once per battle benefit against certain monsters, while the upgraded version of that gear gives a permanent benefit like an extra die to roll). The dice have different colours. Purple and black for enemies, green dice as the basic ones you start with, yellow (has symbols which let you choose whether you use it to attack or defend), orange (attack focused) and blue (defensive dice).
    Another neat thing is that the game basically has 2 major phases. First it's exploring for quite a few rounds, getting gear, upgrading it buying traps, walls, closing off monster gates, etc. which then leads into the second phase. That phase is when the giant bad guy spawns and is going to move towards the town you started at. Things that you set up in phase 1 can help you defeat it (traps do damage, walls help to defend the town a bit longer, etc.).
    It's an extremely fun game. Very easy to teach, quick to play (at most 90 minutes with 4 players), incredibly flexible in terms of difficulty, and it has a charming vibe to it.

    Tom, dig out those rules you used in college to play with your girls! I bought this game for my son, painted it, then sold it when he was too cool to play it anymore. Then a couple of years ago I cobbled together the game from my own minis, eBay and Ye Old Inn website to play with my friends kids - they loved it! They moved but I bought the Mythic Tier just to get the minis and extras (after finding out how expensive it is to buy minis nowadays. Just the minis are worth more than the price of the game) and play with 3 friends using the app. I also have advanced rules for just about EVERYTHING that lifts this game out of generic land.

    @edhart8583 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The simplicity of this game allows you to easily add extra rules without creating any major imbalances. Tom's idea of movement for players is a good one, I'm using that. For searching for treasures, I made it you can only search to the number of furniture pieces in a room. Bookshelves, you pull the top two cards and choose one. Torture rack, top two cards but Zargon chooses. And mix up the stats of the heroes and enemies so they are all different between the male and female versions of each character. One will have more health but the other has more mobility. The game is a sandbox for adding new rules because of its simplicity which I enjoy.

    • @Andrew_NJ
      @Andrew_NJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This game had the horrible roll and move mechanic. If you have to make up your own rules the game was poorly designed to begin with. Now they changed the characters and made them look like they are out of final fantasy. The added characters with the exact same attributes is laughably bad and pandering. I predicted a long time ago that they could never make this game today without pandering. What a waste.

    Has anyone played it with the app yet? I expected it to control monster attacks after the last character has had its turn but it doesn’t. Does that mean we are supposed to them move the monsters ourselves? And since Zargon doesn’t move them doesn’t that mean we can move the monsters away from us? Otherwise I like the app in solo or two player games.

    Both the basic and mythic tiers included the female versions of the Dwarf, Wizard, and Barbarian (and a male Elf), and Sir Ragnar. The mythic version incuded the Bard, Druid, and Warlock, as well as three extra quests, and alt sulpts for every monster, and the NEW DRAGON!!! So in that regard, Tom's critique of not enough new quests rings hollow to me (if you didn't back it and are buying at retail, obviously this is different). If you backed the mythic tier, you got the base game, 2 expansions, and 3 more quest books. Otherwise, I agree that there should have been "Base Game" and "Advanced Game" modes.

The set up was such a chore compared to the payoff, we only played it a few times and I think the heroes got killed every time. The luck factor makes it pretty hard.
    The worst thing about this game, in my opinion, was that it forced my favorite Sierra video game "Hero's Quest" to change it's name to "Quest for Glory". I could never forgive this board game after that happened.

Yes, house rules but that makes it fun. You need to read more, there is pleanty of quests, now with Dragons, and other monsters. If you think it is too simple, change it DM. This is a great game.

But my family and I play it regularly because of the set of house rules I made that make it more challenging and give more of a feeling of progression through the quests (but still keeping it simple). I was immediately dissuaded by the campaign when it was revealed that they weren't taking the opportunity to update the rules AT ALL. Just making new art and changing what they needed due to licensing. Yes, they upgraded the components but so what? That was such a low bar to hurdle but then they go abs scrimp on the insert. I viewed this as a cash grab and everything else I've seen since it hit stores confirms this.

    Even if they are going to include only one gender for each character in the base game, it should be a mix instead of putting all males in the base and hiding all the females in the expansion.

  • @matthewduhn7906
    @matthewduhn7906 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    A few things...
    Hasbro never claimed that this was anything other than a modern reprint. They had to ditch the Warhammer aspects as Games Workshop is not involved in this project as they were with Milton Bradley. It is hardly a cash-grab when the game has been oop for 30 years with used copies selling for high prices on Ebay. It is a new printing for those who never owned the game, those who parted with it and had regrets, and those who want an upgrade in components.
    The female elf is in the base set. The male elf is included in the heroic tier with the other female characters.
    You want more quests? There's 3 new quest books in the Mythic tier! There's new minis in the Mythic tier, like the dragon. You can use the bard as well as the druid and warlock instead of the base characters for any quest.
    The base game comes with new equipment that was only previously available in the European versions, ie. handaxe, bracers and holy water that were never in the North American version.
    Recently, the Guardian Knights were released giving the game more new characters to play along with new card abilities.
    You can also interact with furniture, treasure is found in chests, cupboards and bookshelves. Furniture are also obstacles that you must manoeuvre around. Chests also might be trapped.
    The components are all upgraded. Bigger board, bigger minis, plastic dice (that won't fade), plastic furniture and doors instead of cardboard, US equipment with added UK equipment, more minis, more characters and more quests! It is the same game we all loved but with more goodies.
    A must for any hardcore fans of HeroQuest and dungeon crawlers.

    • @VaultBoy13
      @VaultBoy13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't interact with furniture, you search the room. Sometimes, searching the room gives you something that was found in a chest, cupboard or bookshelf. Most of the time, it's just decoration.
      The only thing I miss from HeroQuest that modern crawlers don't do, is carving the dungeon from the rooms on the board. It may not be as variable as tiles, but it constrains the board to the center of the table.
      I love HeroQuest. I still have my original copy. And, well, Hasbo cash-grabbed this. No matter how you look at it. It's a cash-grab. It's cool that nostalgia people got their copy. But, there's not much value in the game beyond nostalgia.
      There are too many dungeon crawlers available that do it better, with higher quality miniatures and more hero variety, for a cheaper price. Sure, HeroQuest has the furniture bling, but the OG furniture was better. The doors are a nice improvement though.

    • @matthewduhn7906
      @matthewduhn7906 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@VaultBoy13 Finding an artifact in a cupboard while searching for treasure, or getting pricked by a poisonous needle while attempting to open a chest are interactions. Searching the weapons rack only to find that the weapons are rusty and useless is also an interaction. If a character searches the bookshelves, a creative Zargon can reveal the titles of the dusty tomes.
      There's more variety of characters in the Hasbro Hero Quest. Not only can you be male or female versions of the Barbarian, Wizard, Elf and Dwarf; you can be an orc Bard, a female Druid, and a halfling Warlock. The bard, druid and warlock each have unique spells. The bard has a rapier and the warlock has a wand. You can also play as Mentor as a Wizard variant. The Commander of the Guardian Knights gives you a male and female version to choose from, and they have new skill cards: Shield Block, Stalwart, and Knight's Challenge. There is as much character options as any modern dungeon crawler, and I am wagering that Hasbro isn't done yet.
      Hero Quest is no more of a cash-grab than any other reprint, 2nd edition, 3rd edition, 4th edition, or any Kickstarter campaign for a game. The fact that you already own the game and find no use in the new one is on you, not Hasbro. No one forced you to buy it. I, on the other hand, found plenty of reasons to buy the new copy. The new content was the main reason. I like having more characters, and I especially like that there are 3 new Quest books: Spirit Queen's Torment (14 quests + artifacts), The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness (10 quests + artifacts + dragon mini), and Prophesy of Telor (13 quests + artifacts) plus bonus floor boards and tiles.
      Modern dungeon crawlers using modular rooms and corridors comes straight out of Advanced Hero Quest by Games Workshop. If you want more RPG in Hero Quest, Advanced Hero Quest is the game you want.
      I repurposed my original Hero Quest furniture, hero minis, and monsters in Advanced Hero Quest as they can be integrated into that game as described in the rulebook.
      The Mythic tier of the Hasbro Pulse campaign was a deal @ $149.99 when you factor in the retail cost of the base game + Kellar's Keep and Return to your Witch Lord. Not to mention the bonus characters, quests, minis, etc. Awesome.
      Hero Quest is a fun game.
      It's a gateway game into dungeon crawlers and RPGs. In many aspects, including it's simplicity, Hero Quest is still the king.

      @@matthewduhn7906 The amount of house ruling to make it work simply points out that the fans have to design another game to make it work. This is the only game I've seen fans do amendmently defend while having dozens of rules to make it pretty better.
      The difference between the 2nd/3rd/whatever editions on Kickstarter is they actually update the rules. They put in time to make it a better game.
      The fans have been fixing HeroQuest for decades. It's easy to make it better without bogging it down with more rules. Many of us figured out how to fix the game and improved when we were preteens. Hasbro put no effort into this reprint and it shows. From ripping off World of Warcraft for character designs with orcs that are basically green humans to the card and box art that's almost, but not quite, HeroQuest.
      The crime is that this could be the best introductory dungeon crawler, but there's too many others that surpass it. The other crawlers are better in every way. Some actually work as competitive games where the overlord isn't playing story moderator.
      It's great you're having fun with it. But, I don't see how anyone can think rubber stamping a reprint without making any rules updates wasn't a cash grab.

    • @matthewduhn7906
      @matthewduhn7906 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@VaultBoy13 House ruling means that the game is broken. It isn't. Or that you want a different game. I have other games, so I don't need to house rule, I choose whichever game I am in the mood. 90% of Kickstarter games are broken.
      HeroQuest is better than Zombicide and Massive Darkness, so it is a great gateway into dungeon crawlers. Gloomhaven is an unwieldy Euro card game.
      The overlord is from Descent. Also a great game. HeroQuest has a game master. Hasbro has created an app that takes on the role of game master, so your point is moot.
      PS is your version the UK/European version? That is the only explanation as to why you think that the game is broken. The Hasbro version is based on the US version and is definitely not broken.
