just wanted to say - I really enjoy your channel. It is playful and exploratory and I love that you never position yourself as an authority on anything, unlike a lot of TH-camrs (I am not talking about people who eg have heaps of qualifications or experience, to be clear). You are just one of us having fun with paints, sharing your artistic growth and being funny AF in the process. I like that. It never feels like you are trying to sell us something or packaging yourself (which is also not necessarily a bad thing - artists have to make a living… it’s just it gets a bit exhausting when there is so much of it everywhere). Like.. I can tell you are genuinely having fun doing this, and so we have fun with you.
Hi I'm so happy to have found your channel 👍. I am 68 and just starting out.I went crazy and bought a ton of different art supplies lol.😍 I have several pallets soft and oil pastels pencils regular and watercolor. Actually, I’m sorry to say, I absolutely love your channel and I’m so glad your video comes out on Monday mornings. I need it before going back to the office after the weekend! I have a palette obsession so this was a fun video for me. Would love to see a sketchbook video. Happy Monday!
@@IllustrationsByPete It's funny... Last night I found myself bored so I went to your channel and sorted by oldest. Just now, I took a sip of coffee when You as Bob Ross appeared, this made me laugh so hard, I almost spit out my coffee. Thanks for that! It was exciting to see how many palettes you have. Oh, such beautiful sets Pete! I wanted to tell you, I’ve been on a painting binge lately, using Kuretake paints along with some White Nights granulating paints. Having a blast!
@@IllustrationsByPete Agreed! I really like the WN sets, as well as the Rosa Gallery. Lately I’ve been buying open stock RG to create my own palette. I get them when I place my occasional Jacksons Art order when they have a Roman Szmal sale. Those have really gone up in price!

Actually... loved this video (like so many of your videos before)! 🥰 I have the Art Nouveau set as well, lovely curated set of colors. Will be a fun gift to someone that hasn't tried the set yet! Totally agree with you on the variety from the same old split primary. I mean, the split primary has its place for some folks, but happy some brands offer other curated collections. That granulating set looks awesome. Cool tour through your palettes (whoops, almost typed pallets... hmmm... a pallet of palettes... sorry (or am I? lol) been a long day). Cheers!
Actually, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. I will always be on the lookout for Kuretake sets now. I know they do specialty sets every year and I always glanced past them. I won't do that anymore. You could have a pallet of palettes. That would be a longer day than the one you just had. 🙂
Actually videos about watercolor palettes are among my favorite types of videos. I actually used that 33 well palette you began for my Mijello Mission Gold 34 tube set minus the white. :)
I have one of those oversized Mijello 36 palettes that I haven't used either, ha-ha. I thought maybe I'd take out the wells from it and use it for my favorite Kuretake paints. And BTW, that 24 set you showed is the art nouveau set. The little Kuretake 12 set you called nouveau is just the new colors additions that take the big 36 set to the 48. And that's why it doesn't say nouveau.
Actually, you crack me up, I always remove the flap from my metal palettes. Just gets in the way. I prefer to mix on a ceramic dish and desk space is limited so I take it off.
@@IllustrationsByPete I would have never picked up on the Long Island part but that might be a good video for you......we all have an art journey, where we started, when, teachers in school or friends that inspired us and then we have the personal journey, where we lived, where we are next w, how we got here by way of work or marriage or military etc....how those two journeys led us to where we are now etc.
Actually you can move the paints around. You can pry the dried paint out with a pallet knife out of the well and switch it with another where you please. I saw a girl do it on TH-cam.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. You don't need much. I've been collecting these for many years but I could get by with one or 2 good sets and I'd be fine. I used the one cotman set for years before I invested in anything else. 👍🏻
Actually, I am sorry to say, thanks for the video! By the way, I got the Stillman and Birne three color toned paper book that you featured a while back and am enjoying it
Actually, sorry to say, but, you can glue gouache crumbs back in the palette with honey. Works a charm, but just a tiny bit of honey. Thanks for an enjoyable video.
Actually, I HAVE SOME TIPS FOR YOU. If you want to get the perfect wash, just dip your brush in precisely one-and-a-half drops of water, align your elbow with the northern star, and hum in G minor. But for the real next-level stuff, try painting underwater-the flow is totally different, and fish appreciate abstract art! Oh, and make sure to wear mismatched socks for extra vibrant colors. It’s an ancient technique, very niche, but all the greats did it. Trust me, my cousin’s dog’s best friend’s told me this trick, and he's basically the Bob Ross of watercolor! Just trust the process!
Saw this video right away but I kept forgetting to ask this question--you put gouache in your paint boxes? I know it's not poipular for you to do a gouache video here and there but when I go elsewhere I'm told I have to put re-wet drops in the gouache because gouache won't revive when dried out and the gouache I use is not cheap. Is this true for you? I would use watercolor more if I could combine the two. I'm told to buy air-tight palettes but I prefer my old beat-up metal box(es). Your thoughts please, All the best, Actually, I like your videos.
Actually, thank you! That's a great question. So long as it is regular gouache it will rewet easily. I dry them out completely before I close the palette. If they are acrylic gouache, that is a different animal and won't rewet. Which brand are you using? I use M. Graham and Holbein and they all work perfectly in with other watercolors. I do not keep them wet and I don't use them from a tube. You can spray them a minute or so before using them just to moisten them a little but it's not necessary. It may also depend on how you use them. I build up layers with them so I don't need them to be thick like a creamy consistency. If you aren't sure, I would try one dot (decent size) of one color, let it dry completely, and then see if you can reset them to your satisfaction. 👍🏻
Hey, Thanks! I go into others' videos and too much high drama showing me the disaster of leaving out my gouache, allowing it to crack up, and all the things I got to do to prevent this from happening. Total disaster! Anyway, I buy plain old Winsor/Newton designers gouache (no acrylic) in tubes and I clean up after myself wasting quite a bit of paint--it's from my days when I painted with casein--no matter. I was hoping that using gouache would make things run a little smoother. I'm going to do what you suggest and plop it down next to some watercolor and have and go at it. -- Actually, you don't complicate things; you're simply thorough--which is good!
Thank you! I appreciate you very much. it should work fine for those. My gouache does eventually crack but it doesn't ruin it. It comes right back to life with a little water. No drama. 🙂
Actually, I just burst out laughing at you with Bob Ross hair. No, you do not look like him. LOL . On the Kuretake sets, the second one, larger, is the Art Nouveau set, not the first one you have. I have the Art Nouveau set. I looked your first set up and this is how it is listed on the Canadian Amazon site. MC20/12V/NW Paint, Face Color, Abravi, Four Seasons, Nuance Color, Set of 12 Colors. I love these paints because of the colours and because they are like a mixture of Gouache and watercolour. Loved this video and would like to see your opinions on sketchbooks/watercolour sketchbooks.
Actually, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. Both listings used to say Nouveau and now neither of them do. 😂 Either way, I love how Kuretake puts out unique color palettes and not just the split primary stuff. I've really come to enjoy them. I will work on that sketchbook/paper video. 👍🏻
I too love different palettes,I have several,I guess I collect them, lol I’m not sorry….your ranting made me laugh and you are absolutely right all comments good or bad pushes up the algorithm…I subscribed and will be catching up on your videos….
Actually, I'm glad you aren't bothered by mean comments. A lady I watch was deeply wounded by some nasty people. TH-cam creators need thick skin. There are people who just have to be mean. That says more about them than the person they attack.Carry on. PS I cut the ends off my Kuretaki plastic case, so I have just a sleeve. It's a little less fiddly. Putting them in a tin would be better.
Actually, thank you for understanding. Not only does it not bother me, I find it entertaining. I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea but that's ok. I don't need to be. The people who enjoy what I do are my focus. And if someone will feel better about themselves by attacking me, I'm ok with that. It doesn't affect me so I hope it helps them. You cannot have an ego here. It's TH-cam. Thank you for your support. 🙂👍🏻
I’m a big fan of metal palettes. I’ve tried the plastic ones and they just don’t do it for me. I still use my White Nights plastic palette because of the odd size of their full pans. I still love to use my White Nights watercolors. I don’t care who is fighting with who. Companies don’t equal government regimes. Not my monkeys, not my circus, not my business. I also like my Rosa Gallery paints. My Rosa Gallery and White Nights palettes are their largest sets that have had some colors replaced with other colors to better suit my tastes. Like you said with that one palette with all the yellows. Too many yellows are not good. A touch of red or orange or blue or green can really change a yellow quickly to whatever you’re needing. You really only need maybe 2 yellows. Blues and reds are way more important.
I can agree with you on almost every point. The only caveat is that that I generally do not like plastic pallets and I do prefer the metal ones but the plastic one I had with Holbein watercolor holds a sentimental value to me and it's the only palette I have that I allow myself to be messy with. I don't even rinse the brush in between color changes. Normally that would drive me nuts but not in this one. I think it's my rule breaker palette. 😂
@@IllustrationsByPete The large studio White Nights plastic palette is a pretty good palette in general even though it’s plastic. Nice mixing areas and laid out very well. It’s my rule breaking palette in that it’s plastic, but I love the paints it contains. I can’t bring myself to separate the paint pans from their original home. I like to keep my paint sets in their original palettes. I use one of those South Korean made aluminum palettes for my Daniel Smith paints and I have them in a large metal “travel” type palette for experimenting with new colors. That way I can add or remove colors easily without having to clean out one well of my permanent studio palette. It’s probably a dumb idea the way I go about dealing with my palettes. But it works for me and that’s the most important thing. If it works for you, roll with it.
actually, sometimes people may use “actually” because actually they may actually be speaking English as an actual second language, actually, and use it as a filler word and not be aware how it actually comes across. Something to actually keep in mind 😂
Pete, there is a creator here on TH-cam, Studio of M.M that makes a stackable palette made specifically to fit the kuratake pans. Each tray fits 12 pans. I love it because it’s makes them accessible to use and takes up little room on my desk. Actually.😊
Actually I wrote you re: this video. I’m sorry to say, but you need to clean that palette. LOL. Also , I think my comments all disappeared…🤷♀️ computers, what cha gonna do?
Actually, TH-cam has had a lot of trouble with that lately. A lot of people have said their comments have disappeared on other videos. They need to get their act together.
Actually, I'm curious as to why artists don't paint pallettes. They tend to be so boring. Actually, I think people can be sincerely sorry to say things. Doctor: I'm sorry to say you have Sickle Cell Anemia. Mentor: I'm sorry to say I know what it's like to live with...
Actually, those are good examples of being sorry to say things. I am talking about criticisms though. "I'm sorry to say that I think your artwork is hideous". "I'm sorry to say that I think you don't understand what real art is." Like that. 👍🏻
I don't understand why you bother for someone who said something negative in the comments. TH-cam has billions of users, so anyone can watch a video say his/her stupid thing and then leave. It is pointless to spend your recording time and energy to address each and everyone's comments.
I understand what you are saying. I find it funny and it gives me something to talk about so that's why I did it here. I almost never talk about the negative comments but I wanted to both thank everyone for not attacking the person who went at me and just to share a little with the group. That's all. 👍🏻
@@IllustrationsByPeteIt is not funny but it is not either something that ought to bother you. You've wasted ten minutes of your palettes' video for the unknown internet troll. A person among 8 billion others that you don't know and you'll never meet. It is impossible to be likable to everyone out there. Some people like us, some other don't. Be grateful to those who like you and ignore the others. It is so simple. :)
I understand your point. I enjoy everyone. I enjoy the people who like me and the people who don't. Both are important to me. It doesn't bother me in the least. I enjoy talking about everything so this is just another thing to talk about. I don't look at it as wasted time on the video, I look at it as more things to talk about. I receive a lot of hate sometimes but I don't usually talk about it. This instance was particularly funny to me so I added it to the video. My audience knows how I am, many of them were laughing with me in the comments. It's all ok. Thank you for letting me know how you feel. I appreciate it. 🙂
Actually, you're an amazing person Pete! 🫂 Actually 😅, for my half/full pans, I prefer flat upcycled wooden toy boxes from my Son's younger years, and they are really nice, good quality!
Actually, I think you're amazing as well. That sounds like a great idea. I have a few old empty cigar boxes I was eyeing. I want to turn them into travel boxes. 👍🏻
Actually I think it’s cool that this giveaway won’t leave USA, but just because I already own the art nouveau set (google nouveau and listen to how it’s said, it’s French 🫠🫠). Jokes aside, I recently got to know (just on line, haven’t purchased any of them) super vizion’s curated sets too, they’ve got Van Gogh and Monet themed sets (this last being my favorite), which there isn’t much said about on TH-cam yet, so yeah, if you are willing to make new reviews I’m all ears and eyes. AND don’t take white nights for granted pls, it’s offensive, I’m not aware of them having bad rep, but I own the 21 granulating colors (which yes, I chose to purchase bc of the cute purple tin) and the pastel set, and this next month I’m also purchasing the (don’t scream lol) metallic/pastel set, which I’m dying to have. BUT I swear I’ll quit my purchases by the end of the year and be quite happy with what I already own, bc you know, I miss having money on my pocket (watercolors in Brazil are SUPER expensive). That’s all, kind regards lovely ✨✨
Actually, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. I love the white nights paints and the brand itself doesn't have a bad rep. However, there is an embargo on Russian made products right now and when I reviewed them I was attacked for it. As I said in the video, I still use them and I still enjoy them. @@IllustrationsByPete i actually have the bigger cotman set. It was like 40% off on Amazon
That's awesome! You can get a lot of mileage out of them. They are great paints. 👍🏻
Actually, I am sorry to say, thanks for the video! By the way, I got the Stillman and Birne three color toned paper book that you featured a while back and am enjoying it
Actually, I'm so glad to hear it! I'm using it in next week's video. 👍🏻
I prefer the description "moist paints" because the colors aren't tacky 😆
😂 Everyone has their thing. 👍🏻
Actually, sorry to say, but, you can glue gouache crumbs back in the palette with honey. Works a charm, but just a tiny bit of honey.
Thanks for an enjoyable video.
Actually, that's a great idea. Thank you! 👍🏻
Actually...😂🤣😂
No drama. 🙂
@@IllustrationsByPete 🌹I'll report back and thanks again. r.
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel. 🙂
There is a company on Etsy who will make you a custom pallet for your Kuretake paints
Thank you! I will look into it. 👍🏻
That's the truth. You're the one that has to create from it so if you're good then that's all that matters. 🙂
actually, sometimes people may use “actually” because actually they may actually be speaking English as an actual second language, actually, and use it as a filler word and not be aware how it actually comes across.
Actually.😊
@gertietheduck Actually, that is a very good point. I did not think of that. Thank you.
@jenniferarted3652 Thank you! I need to check that out. 👍🏻
Actually, I'm sorry to bring this up... but you need more palettes 🤪😆.
Actually, I'm sorry to say, I do. 😂
😂
@😂IllustrationsByPete
Actually, you can put in your empty big palet two trays of paints, if you take out mixing tray with wells.
Actually, that's true. 👍🏻
I, for one, am a fan of Ridiculous.
Well that's a good thing. That's all you'll find here. 🙂
Actually, I do hate to tell you, so I won't. 😂
Actually, 😂
Love actually?
Actually, it doesn't matter, don't worry about it.
Actually ok, I won't. 🙂
here's some more interaction
Thank you! I appreciate that. 😂
Actually, I am sorry to say this. ( not). I love your channel and videos. I get such joy watching And learning from you. Thank you kindly
Actually, thank you! I am glad you enjoy these. I appreciate you. 🙂
actually I don't have any comment to make, so take this cute cat instead
Actually, I'll take it. 🙂
😂
Actually… do I really need to leave a comment? Is it really *that* important?
Actually, yes, always. 😂
Actually... That's all I had to say
Actually, thank you! 🙂
@IllustrationsByPete Yeah, I know, lol. My brain is just always begging to play the devil's advocate. 😈
You brought up some good points I did not think of. I appreciate it.
I came to this video because it said it was about palettes. wtfcis this nonsense!?
😂 I see you're a big fan. Welcome to this channel of nonsense. 👍🏻
@IllustrationsByPete not a fan at all. Told TH-cam not to recommend you again.
Ok, that's what you're supposed to do when you find a channel you don't like. I hope you find what you enjoy elsewhere. 👍🏻
Actually, you're an amazing person Pete! 🫂
Actually 😅, for my half/full pans, I prefer flat upcycled wooden toy boxes from my Son's younger years, and they are really nice, good quality!
They are probably two of my favorite sets I've bought in the last couple of years. I have not seen those particular Supervision sets so I will definitely be on the lookout for those. Thank you for the info! 🙂
I was wondering what that was all about Now i get it
🙂
