Danny, Paul Runyan taught me this chip with loft 44 years ago at a Golf Digest School. For distance control he said "take your putting stroke back as far needed to get the ball to the hole...then what club with that stroke gets you safely onto the green (as quickly as possible)...and that is the club you use. Invaluable lesson from one of golf's all time greats.

Dear Danny, Thank you for a straightforward, practical guide to chipping and its usage with different clubs. Thank you for your humility and honesty about opening the club face sometimes. I have a chipping group lesson tomorrow (at Ivanhoe Golf Course in Melbourne, Australia). As I believe in 'preview, do, review', 1) I have watched your video and made notes; 2) I shall practise applying your tips before the lesson on the chipping green and then do the lesson; 3) after the lesson and/or the day after, I shall apply what I learn tomorrow together with your tips and Graham's. You are a generous man, having made all these videos for us. I would love to come to England one day and have a lesson with you. May the Lord bless you and keep you, Danny! Marshall
7 iron, Danny I use many different clubs around the green and I always get comments on why not just use the club with the loft. I explain to them years ago I had a coach that showed me how to use all the clubs in my bag for around the gren shots.....thank you for bringing this to the forefront...You're content is the best on TH-cam....
Fantastic instruction Danny! Nothing hurts more more than having a great drive and decent approach that is short of the green and then duff the chip shot. Thanks
Just short left in the rough at 16 is a place I am very familiar with ! ‘Putting with loft’ is a bit more method that will unclutter the mind. I sort of do this at times when I am chipping well. PS I would typically ‘handle drive’ a 9 iron from that spot and take a couple more to get down. This curating and translating from the top specialist teachers is great content. Thanks.
ROUND YOUR SHOUDLERS! I think it was another one of your videos that you mentioned this for putting, and I incorporated it into chipping as well successfully.
I think a lot of people get around the green and feel they need to grab a wedge and get the ball high in the air and land it 3” from the cup and stop on a dime, because we see the pros hitting these chips. In reality we usually skull the ball sending it flying off the other side of the green! Bump and run with low iron is a much safer shot for most. Great video Danny.
This is gold dust and love how you put which clubs you’re using in LH corner. This simplifies things. Glad to see it’s only part 1. Then may we have same on pitching please? With your help, I’m now at my lowest handicap in 4 years and got my first hole in one last Saturday in a comp which I won. Thx, Danny. As I’ve said before, you’re the tops.
I first heard the quote 'putting with loft' attributed to Raymond Floyd. I appreciate how you actually use that as the foundation and add the necessary adjustments for consistent chipping.
A top 10 lesson Danny. As always, the simplistic way you break things down is top notch. I especially like step 3 and how to use the same motion from steps 1 and 2 with different lofted clubs to manage distance. Looking forward to incorporating this into my next practice session.
This is the best tip I have ever received, Have struggled desperately around the greens for the couple of years I have been playing after a 10 year hiatus.. It saved me at least 5 or 6 shots this weekend alone after seeing it on friday!!!. Love your videos Danny, always relevant and easy to follow.. ( the towel and whip drill also helped hugely btw).
Hi Danny, thank you for yet another great video. I have been struggling with chipping lately and had a lesson with an experienced coach who made things so complicated that I have been unable to incorporate his teachings into my game and left me unable to chip for a while. Yesterday, while waiting for a free bay at the driving range, I watched this video and it all clicked! Putt with loft, how simple is that?!? Soon a bay came free and within minutes I was chipping beautifully (well, mostly...) with different clubs for different distances. Amazing! I just love the way you are able to simplify the complexity of the game into easier to digest bitesize mental images, it just works. Thank you so much for your work.
Very similar to your chipping vs pitching video bout 5 years ago. Your actually playing the same hole in that video. That video helped me a lot in my short game. This for the most part hits the same key ideas. Very good video. Your videos helped me improve my technique over the years and it’s good to see that even your old videos are showing the same good techniques that your showing today. Thanks Danny
Thanks Danny! This chipping lesson around the green is awesome!! I will surely apply and share this amazing chipping lesson with my female golf buddies. Thanks again for sharing this. 🙏
Thank you so much , Danny. This is exactly what I needed for around the green. I either hit to hard and go off the other side or hit way short. Club selection part was so important, too. I have always struggled with that. Once again, the best training and simple explanation available today. Keep up the great work.
Another beauty Danny. You have helped me quite a bit with the upright chipping stroke. this looks like it should put the finishing touches on it for me. Can't wait for the weather to cooperate so i can get out and practice this. Thanks for another great lesson.
I love your video about the pendulum and letting the club just FALL ON THE BALL,that concept is CRITICAL for someone like me who gets quick and flippy. My rhythm is flawless now....It is super genius, with a few adaptations I can chip off any lie. As far as putting with loft there is a KEY difference. In putting your lower body is stable, when putting with loft you are still using a pivot, there is ROTATION,just look at your knees..
@@DanielMaude Following this video, I won our Seniors Comp yesterday and I’m putting it all down to you. My chipping was awesome and it knocked at least five shots off my score.
I've been using the Rule of 12 method to determine which club to chip with. Amazingly after you've been using this method for a while you can get pretty close to the right club by instinct without having to step off every pin or carry 4 clubs with you. The landing area, one yard on, stays the same. The club is the only thing that changes. Before I started doing this I would get to my ball and discover I needed a different club but instead of walking all the way back to the cart I would just try the shot with the club I had in hand. Usually with less then desired results. Love your videos.
Brilliant video lesson Danny, thank u, I’m often losing shots around the green by shanking, it’s so annoying. For me it’s concentrating on that putting stroke and tempo.
Great video Danny, thanks. I’ve booked some lessons at The Oaks with one of Graham’s professionals in a few weeks - looking forward now to ‘putting with loft’!
I use a system based around the number 13. I pick my landing spot on the green and pace the distance from the ball to there. Then I pace from the landing spot to the flag. Then I work out the proportions. If the ball to landing spot is 1/4 of the total distance I deduct 4 from 13 = 9 iron. If the distance from ball to landing spot is 1/2 the total distance I deduct 2 from 13 equals 11 which is gap wedge, PW is 10. You can work it backwards too if you have a favourite chipping club. So if you really like to chip with your 8 iron you find a landing spot 1/5th of the way to the flag (8+5 =13). You might have to adjust slightly for fast or slow greens uphill or downhill but it's a really good starting point.
Great, great video. Early on I was taught to use a 9-iron and land it 1/3 of the way and let it run out the other 2/3. So I've been a one trick pony only using the 9. Can't wait to try out the other clubs. Thanks Danny!
Great video, and simple explanation for chipping. What I noticed is the same distance your arms are moving and every club increases the distance of the ball. Would also request in the future to share on pitching.
I just implemented your "putting with loft" idea on my 36 holes at the weekend and it really helped. My 8 iron ran hot and saved me at least 5 strokes because my long game let me down on shots into the green this time. Many thanks for this tip, Danny, very helpful
I like 8 iron for this shot. Practiced it quite a bit. I feel like I can control distance. I'm always trying to hole that shot. This tip will no doubt be an improvement. Thanks DM.
I can’t believe this lesson as I’ve just had nearly the exact lesson from John Mellor at The Oaks!!! Using John’s method of putting stroke 😮and a constructive backswing of increasing the the backswing by a clubs grip size then slowly decreasing the loft. Our course and chipping area is still a bit wet but can wait to get out there and really put into practice. Good stuff Danny.
Danny you’ve been my go-to guy for anything golf swing related and have helped me immensely. But I’ve been really frustrated lately with my game because I’m a range hero and a course zero… it’s driving me nuts! I can’t figure out why I’m having this struggle. Lol
Thanks, so many times my stroke is thin. Only way I have had better success with the stroke is to get the backswing at least knee high. I’ll work on this lesson you’ve shared now. Thanks so much!
Great video. I have been using this chipping mindset for a few seasons and it really helps get the ball closer to the hole. I usually defer to my 9 iron, thanks for changing club options]s to the lower lofted clubs with the same putting stroke. I get in trouble with trying to speed up my swing to get more distance with my 9. Will try different club selections!
Excellent video again Danny. I heard Tommy interviewed recently and he spoke about this technique which I tried to replicate but without really knowing what he meant. This makes it so clear, can’t wait to go try it out.
Great info, as always! Another thing that helped me with these shorter chips is lifting up the heel of the club just a little. Been so long I honestly dont recall the purpose... I think it was for consistency, avoiding tops and chunks. Regardless, that change improved my chipping game significantly.
Love Danny's videos and love the principle of this with variety of chipping club selection in accordance with lie and pin placement, but that green also looks like it's rolling at about a 4. I think that 7 iron absolutely gets there under more normal circumstances.
I played a round with a friend last week, and I wound up chipping with both my 8 iron and my 5 hybrid, on his advice. I did almost exactly what you did here: take a putting stroke and put a little power behind it if I needed it to run. I was pleasantly surprised by how often it worked! For so long, I was stuck in the mentality that I MUST chip with a pitching wedge or a gap wedge, sand wedge, etc. I saved myself a lot of strokes by using this technique. Great instruction, as always!
Been doing this for a month and some change, huge difference on the chipping into the green. Have been brave enough to use my 9 iron but I have found that my PXG Gap Wedge is the glory club.
This really works, been doing this and it works so well, as did last weeks tip, , had two of my best rounds last week after not playing due to work for five weeks, but hotel room practice with the towel tip added to last week 👍thanks Danny
Danny this one is game changer for me, watched this video other day said I try it before leaving the comment. Mind blowing results with the 60..56..50.. thanks for sharing your experience 🤝 liked , comment, and shared 🙌
Gary Player always advised to keep it low. He typically used a 7, but also with wristy action. I have found the lofted putt approach the lowest risk shot, unless I am forced to use loft to clear a bunker.
Great tips Danny. Perfect for me as I struggle to hit greens, but am usually close so accurate chipping is real important for me to score well. Be Well.
Hi Danny, another great video , i look fwd to every Sunday afternoon to site down and watch . chipping ratios, SW 1:1, PW 1:2 , 9iron 1:3 , 8iron 1:4, 7iron 1;5 , clubs have a value take away from 12 , ie: ( rule of 12 )
Danny this is great content. Chipping has been the worst part of my game forever. One issue for me is that every time I have gone for a short game lesson each coach has had a different approach to the short game (a bit like putting). Nothing really worked and it was confusing. The way you have approached it is great, it's practical, and most importantly it's a framework to follow. I also think the pro's don't always help by using lob wedges everywhere around the green. Finally, I would say there is a lot of negative language used when discussing chipping, you are a lesser golfer if you use a 9 iron rather than throwing a lob wedge high to the pin. Thanks for the content I look forward to part 2
A few years ago I added a Ping Chipr to my bag. Lie of a putter, loft of a 9 iron. I know some might laugh, but it works well for me. Easy to hit online.
Were you watching me last weekend here in middlefield Connecticut USA 😜? I had given up on trying to swing at chip/short pitch shots like the pros do and used a putting stroke with the 9i from 3yrds up to maybe 10 yrds off if pin wasnt rigt on edge …but i hadnt used putting stroke for a long time ,but it def worked well ( much better than my usual skull/flub of late) …saved me like 5 strokes getting on and at least same in putts …i have a lot of extra strokes so i still am a lil over 50 for 9 , but this technique did bring golf back to fun for me ….thanks for the validation and the tweaks for me to improve even more..
Love it, and all your videos, but can you differentiate between this stroke and the stroke in "What Nobody Tells You About Pitching Onto The Green" shot so that I can figure this out - it seems the same but I need to have the two differences in my notes. Thanks!!!
Love your videos Danny! They’ve really helped my swing. I’ve recently really started taking good seriously as far as fixing my swing. Have recently shot my two best scores ever (86 & 88) after constantly scoring 103-115. My main issue is finding a consistent swing with my driver and irons. What’s your thoughts on training aids such as structure ball and the hanger by Watson golf?
I remember a lesson my Mike Adams where he said calculate distance by subtracting your club from 12 to gauge your landing area. A PW as #10 would men you land half way to the hole. 9 would be 1/3 and 8 1/4. It’s a way to calculate the roll-out.
I don’t carry irons lower than the 8 in my bag. However, I’ve used one of my hybrids for “putting” from off the green, when I’ve had a lot of green to cover. My current Ping 9 iron loft matches my old 8 iron loft, my Ping 8 loft match my old 7 iron loft. I had no idea manufacturers have different lofts for irons (excluding wedges). I had to rethink my game with the new irons.
This is great. I’m a lower handicap tee to 50 yards and probably a 19 handicap 50 yards in. Just can’t seem to get my short game dialed in. I think this is going to be big for me.
Started doing this a few weeks ago and my playing partners can’t believe the difference! I think it may have knocked 5+ shots off my scoring, can’t wait to play on 18 ‘dry’ holes again (Uk 😂) thanks for another great video Danny!
Raymond Floyd was the one who coined the idea of "putting with loft". He did an excellent instructional video on it called "Cuttin Strokes" back in the 1990's that's worth a watch if you can find it
Short game is the worst part of my game right now. Like a lot of people I address the ball and then do a combination of chip and pitch and have 0 control of where that TP5 is going. I’m now practicing with just a PW and 8. I do use a 56w with a putting motion if I’m just off an elevated green with not much room to the pin. Hopefully this season I’ll get this part of my game to match the rest. Consistency is what I’ll be looking for. I’m hoping to save about 9 strokes per round by fixing my short game and getting that ball closer to the stick for shorter putts. Thanks for all the short game tips.

I use a system based around the number 13. I pick my landing spot on the green and pace the distance from the ball to there. Then I pace from the landing spot to the flag.

Been doing this for a month and some change, huge difference on the chipping into the green. Have been brave enough to use my 9 iron but I have found that my PXG Gap Wedge is the glory club.
Crazy. I'm on the way to the taining area to try this. It may solve a long lasting problem in may play. THX.
Good luck Michael
@@DanielMaude At a first glance this technique runs very well. I hope it didn't depends not only on luck. 😉
This really works, been doing this and it works so well, as did last weeks tip, , had two of my best rounds last week after not playing due to work for five weeks, but hotel room practice with the towel tip added to last week 👍thanks Danny
That’s what I do
Danny this one is game changer for me, watched this video other day said I try it before leaving the comment.
Such a simple way of chipping
Good stuff Danny.
Glad you enjoyed it
First finger right hand, I point it down the shaft to remind me PUTTING stroke, that helps me calm my putting swing down with the irons.
Love it
Nice tip Danny will try this out great tip on using all your irons and putting stance.
Thank you 😁
Great tips Danny. Perfect for me as I struggle to hit greens, but am usually close so accurate chipping is real important for me to score well. Be Well.
Thank you Dennis
Hey Danny I tried your sand trap technique. Awesome works great thank you
Thanks Michael!
Thanks Danny! This is great!
Glad you like it
Great stuff as usual. Thanks Danny, works great!! This may just move me out of the “worlds worst chippers” category.😊
You can do it Leroy
Hi Danny, another great video , i look fwd to every Sunday afternoon to site down and watch .
chipping ratios, SW 1:1, PW 1:2 , 9iron 1:3 , 8iron 1:4, 7iron 1;5 , clubs have a value take away from 12 , ie: ( rule of 12 )
Thank you Malcolm
Thanks Danny ❤
Thank you Nathan!
What a fantastic tip Danny 🎉
Have fun using it
Thanks for sharing Danny 🦘
My pleasure Kerry
You explain this drill very well 👍
Glad it was helpful Henrik
Great stuff Danny I needed this, only thing holding me back now. Surely this has hot to work for me 🤞 Thanks as always and have a great weekend
Thank you Martin, appreciate you taking the time to comment 😁
A few years ago I added a Ping Chipr to my bag. Lie of a putter, loft of a 9 iron. I know some might laugh, but it works well for me. Easy to hit online.
I think they are great Kevin
The ol Texas edge
Thanks!!!
Well done Danny excellent work as always 👍 😊
All the best Roy
I think that’s great, just really depends on green speed
I don’t carry irons lower than the 8 in my bag. However, I’ve used one of my hybrids for “putting” from off the green, when I’ve had a lot of green to cover. My current Ping 9 iron loft matches my old 8 iron loft, my Ping 8 loft match my old 7 iron loft. I had no idea manufacturers have different lofts for irons (excluding wedges). I had to rethink my game with the new irons.
Great video Danny I would have said a 5 iron running through the wet green. Another bit or armoury in the bag 👍
Absolutely Rob 👍
Thanks Danny, I will try this tomorrow
This is great. I’m a lower handicap tee to 50 yards and probably a 19 handicap 50 yards in. Just can’t seem to get my short game dialed in. I think this is going to be big for me.
Started doing this a few weeks ago and my playing partners can’t believe the difference! I think it may have knocked 5+ shots off my scoring, can’t wait to play on 18 ‘dry’ holes again (Uk 😂) thanks for another great video Danny!
Another birdie, well done!
Thanks for the support
Raymond Floyd was the one who coined the idea of "putting with loft". He did an excellent instructional video on it called "Cuttin Strokes" back in the 1990's that's worth a watch if you can find it
Would love to see that video, I wonder if it can be found on the internet
Short game is the worst part of my game right now. Like a lot of people I address the ball and then do a combination of chip and pitch and have 0 control of where that TP5 is going. I’m now practicing with just a PW and 8. I do use a 56w with a putting motion if I’m just off an elevated green with not much room to the pin. Hopefully this season I’ll get this part of my game to match the rest. Consistency is what I’ll be looking for. I’m hoping to save about 9 strokes per round by fixing my short game and getting that ball closer to the stick for shorter putts. Thanks for all the short game tips.
Really happy to help
