They were all propaganda but it was done more subtly back then based on the generation is was geared towards. Go back and watch old shows with a critical eye/ear and you’ll see it.

I've gotta second the opposite sentiment: He's made some very good movies. What we do in the Shadows, Jojo Rabbit, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople are all fantastic. I just think that, when he lost the limits of small-budget filmmaking and had Marvel carte blanche, he lost the benefit of the edit.
He's got talent. He just needs some external limits to refine the good ideas from the bad.

Taika Watiti, Ryan Johnson, Weiss and Benioff, etc, were hired when Disney was high on its own supply. This was on the heels of the Avengers and The Force Awakens and they actually believed their own press.
They forgot that they themselves didn’t create either Star Wars or the MCU, they simply bought those brands and quickly destroyed them.
You can't really blame people who are known for a certain style of work to do that style of work when they are hired, though.
Fault lies with the execs who hired people and then expect them to do something different.
Marvel had 10 hit years with very few duds in the infinity saga. Star Wars has been a mess since 2014 and the canon purge of that year

In Ragnarok, the boulder character talks about his mum and dad. In Love and Thunder, he talks about his dad and dad. The pandering is strong.

The guy's had a number of projects since Love and Thunder, and obviously doesn't enjoy working with Marvel. He's still working and making more money than you are - I don't think his career is "destroyed" by any means.
And even *if* he doesn't work with any studios of that size again (remains to be seen), there are tons of directors who would consider themselves successful to work at whatever level he works at from now on.

I suspect Love and Thunder gave Waititi more control than Ragnarok did, which didn't help the production. It leaned too heavily into silliness and didn't find a good balance. It's hard to take the character's situation seriously when they don't do it themselves.

I also wondered if he helped cancel the show. The show creator was saying he had the idea for 3 seasons, and after season 2 Taika did some interview that was like "I don't know if I'll come back, the love story already played out" and sometime after news came out that the show was canceled.
Also the what we do in the shadows show i feel like his failures reflected badly on that show and led to it's cancelation as well it's a shame though cause that show is hilarious

Doesn’t look like they mentioned that anywhere, the criticism was ‘overdone’; could be referring to story beats, themes, writing styles, world building, hell could even just be the concept of super heroes doesn’t do much for them. Where’d you get the realism thing from?
I haven't liked a single movie he did for Marvel. I remember leaving the theater with that "it felt entertaining, but also insane and backdoor woke" ringing in my mind after each one, especially Love and Thunder which just felt like a fever dream for someone testing just how "weird woke" they can get before it causes the alarm bells to go full send.
It's so hard to watch good people going through such hardships. Maybe we can start a fund to get them the mental health care that they clearly need?

3:34 I'm sorry but "Thor: Ragnarok" has the same vibes as "Guardians of the Galaxy" and was probably the last decent Marvel movie which had just the right amount of comedy IMHO.
Agree with the comparison to GotG. Credit where its due, people loved Waititi’s Thor from Ragnarok through Endgame, he was a genuine great character going through the paces & coming through the other side. He went from a sterile 1D character before to someone who could really grow and was fun to watch. (Aka a humanized God)
Imo, the heartbreak of L&T is they had the Guardians segment (perfect), Bale & the Gore story (🔥), and Portman w/ the cancer story…the main storyline was INSANELY powerful and could have been a masterclass. Imo if they’d stayed in that darker more serious lane they could’ve had a hit. Drowning the film in cheese (feeding an axe beer, a rock unnecessarily rambling about his dads banging, screaming goats over n over, 2!!! GnR songs, etc etc) was the major lack of good judgement and commitment to the story/tone that lead to the movie tanking. Wasted their talents and efforts, because everyone killed it in their performances… especially Bale & Portman in their serious moments. If Waititi was the tool people are describing, the dismissal was earned.
Thank GOD he didn't get his hands on a live-action Akira.

I have to disagree, I really didn't care for Ragnarok. His writing and direction style just doesn't fit Thor or really Marvel in general. I'm glad that Disney is finally deciding that it likes money more than forcing a few of their weirdo employees political ideology down their audiences' throats.
I'll just point out that one can only be fired from a job one has - one cannot be fired from working for someone "ever again".

There are a couple epilogue stories but the rest is garbage. Spiderman 2, 3 and Guardians 3 I like.
People forget that Marvel started out with a bang directly after Endgame with stuff like Far From Home, No Way Home, Wandavision, and Loki. I was thinking they could still make this exciting post Endgame. It all started going to shit after that though. Especially on the movie side - Love and Thunder, Quantamania, and even Multiverse of Madness ended up being disappointments. So sad.
Unfortunately Taika was nowhere near as funny as his ego thought he was.

I didn't like Thor 3, I thought it was way too different form the first 2 Thor movies, and made Thor and the destruction of his culture, kingdom and home, to be a joke. In the 1st movie, Asgard looks HUGE, but in the 3rd movie, the population is tremedously cut to 1/8th of the population. His 3 friends DIE including gatekeeper and Sif is missing.... it's just dumb.

I loved Taika Waititi growing up. Seeing him on tv doing standup was a treat, then his big vampire movie- amazing..
..then he left for Hollywood, made that great Thor and Nazi movie, which I loved.. but something soon after went horribly, horribly wrong.
Honestly, this is just Disney passing the buck. I am sure Disney told Waititi he had to make an inclusive movie. Then Disney turns around and blames Waititi when that inclusive movie loses money. Disney & Marvel executives and creatives need to be fired.

Finally. I'm not one for goofy Waititi Thor. That was too disconnected to Thor's character arc from an unworthy, self centered moron of a god to one who is redeemed of past actions and behavior by becoming worthy of leadership, trust and honor again through his own self sacrificing actions. It was like watching a split personality, contradictory character. One minute a moron, next a hero.
100% true! It started in Thor: Ragnarok where Thor became this screaming, full-of-jokes, childish, goofy clown/court jester. The stoic, majestic Thor who is destined to become the ruler of Asgard disappeared entirely.
Ragnarok was one of the best MCU movie. Love and Thunder sucked
I was annoyed by Thor: Ragnarok, I fell for his trap in jojo Rabbit, I was infuriated by Thor: Love and Thunder, i didn't bother to watch Next Goal Wins. Now, I hope he'll be fired by WB for making Akira, cause I'm scared how he's going to ruin this one.
These writers/directors aren't making these mivies for the general public. They make these movies to gain favor with other like-minded colleagues. They try to "out-woke" each other.
