I never put off till tomorrow the things I should've done today,
No I've always waited way longer than that.
Word
If I'm from the St. Augustine tourism office I'm sending the band a thank you note. What a beautiful song and video!
Very nice song, But this is about a dysfunctional family in a small town. Wouldn't be in such a hurry to say "Come see us" if I were St. Augustine ( which is a fine community, btw. ).
@@mben-david2064 everybody's family is somewhat dysfunctional. The song is about life, looking back at fond memories in youth, in your hometown, looking how things change as life goes on. Bittersweet, but that's life.
@@mben-david2064 I'm from a dysfunctional family from a fairly small town. When I was a child in the 1970s (I'm 54 now) My brother and sister, with me in the middle, would always beg my father to take us to Disney World when we took our 12 hour drives to the Sunshine State...Dad always said he had other plans for us instead. (He had his reasons for not ever taking us there.) So instead, he first would make a beeline right to...you guessed it, St. Augustine. Yes we zig zagged around the state and had a great time, but we would never end up in Orlando..... Some of the best memories of my childhood. A lot has changed since then. Family was torn apart from all directions. I haven't been to St. Augustine since I was that blond, sunburnt kid looking for crabs in the sand. You could imagine this song takes me there, and perhaps I should visit again. This for me is a great song. I can relate.
Just learned of this band & love this video❤
Mom took us to St Augustine, FL as children.
Great memories💫
@@davidmarple4422 Agreed 100%!
I’m from St Augustine and from a very poor family. I’m back today as a tourist with my own family and currently not speaking to my own parents. I took my infant son to the beach for the first time today, off 10th street, just 2 blocks from where I grew up. This song just brought me to tears.
As I have said before, Taylor is one of the best songwriters I have heard in my 50 years of listening to and playing music. And now he hits home with this:
As I get older I don’t talk about mistakes. I don't talk about regrets
At this point, I’m not sure what good it would do
Thanks you Dawes for the promise a beautiful new album to ease the worries in these trying times.
100% agreement. A degree of self-awareness that is completely unique in the world of rock/pop lyrics.
Exactly how it feels to sit on the sea wall at 1 am, the fort behind you and the water lapping in front of you.
Idk what it is but saint Augustine gives you that never wanna leave feeling
Just last year i sat on the sea wall playing this song
I love it when Taylor writes lyrics that makes one sit back and reflects one's life, and really just pause and ponder about the experiences, surroundings that shape oneself.
He is a fantastic songwriter!
Born in Jacksonville, been a lifelong resident of St Augustine for almost all 24 years of my life... and this is the first time I’ve heard this song.
UPDATE: I just moved to Albuquerque in July 2023, and this song resonates extra hard now.
I cried from the opening line all the way through. We all have a St. Augustine somewhere inside us.
Truth! I think that's the real beauty of this song.
OH MY GOD! How did you know so well what my heart felt but couldn't articulate? How did you know I so needed these words, this melody, spoken exactly this way? I cried. One of the most poignant songs I've ever heard. Lived in FL, visited St. Augustine when I could, always found it drew me to its soul. I've memorized the song, will purchase the album. You gave me a gift and it's not even my birthday. You made my soul feel alive. Meager words, but deeply meant....Thank you. Thank you so much!
Your words are also pretty poignant! I’m a great judge of character and you Peggy are a real nice person! God bless!
Me too........the sweet sadness fills me.....haven't been back since 76....probably never will.....probably for the better.....
"St. Augustine At Night" -- Lyrics
The cherry gum would cover up the cigarettes we smoked
The 7-Up would balance out the beer
Mom would make us dinner, and we'd all try not to choke
Dad was working later every year
We count the trucks on Highway 1 on their way to Jacksonville
Wonderin' where they headed on from there
My brothers and my sister all stood spiritually still
As if those roads became the answers to their prayers
But I didn't want it any other way
This town was the one thing that felt right
All these tourists could be kings during the day
But not in St. Augustine at night
I was working at the bait shack, supplying all the fishing tours
Pretty soon I was chartering a boat
My dad said I needed dumb luck and a secret stash of Coors
If I stood a chance at keeping things afloat
That's when my girlfriend told me "There's a baby on the way
And I need to know you're gonna go to bat."
Well, I never put off 'til tomorrow the things I shoulda done today
No, I've always waited way longer than that
I have never had much say in how I felt
I've been guided by my barroom appetites
So if this world belongs to everybody else
Just leave me St. Augustine at night
The Lord must really love us common folk
'Cause he made so goddamn much
Now, if he'd just point the way to go
If he could just start speaking up
Our oldest brother left this world for leading one too many lives
I guess he settled for none at all
The rest of us just grew apart and blamed our husbands and our wives
When anyone was asked why they don't call
And life became a series of birthdays, cars, and pets
Just anything to look forward to
I don't talk about mistakes. I don't talk about regrets
At this point, I'm not sure what good it would do
And I'm not asking for anybody's help
As I gaze out where the stars dance with the lights
If I'm not sure how I feel about myself
I still got St. Augustine at night
I still got St. Augustine at night

I played this for my mom on our way to visit the fresh graves of dear family friends. It was late September, clear visibility, and colorful. I'd never been out to my aunt's property in the fall before I those sad few days.
One of my favorite bands singing about one of my favorite places
As a Floridian I would like to thank y’all for this
Wow. Home never feels more familiar and right - more "home" - than when alone at night. How could you capture this so well?
Im so sorry for your loss guys. Holding you in our hearts and prayers.
This song is giving me life in some dark times. Beautiful as always.
Fantastic! Easily my favorite new Dawes song in a while. An instant classic that will be well received when the band heads back out on the road again. Amazing lyrics that paint a beautiful picture of the intimacy and tragedy in many of our lives.
Thank you Taylor Thank you Dawes.....you so often speak the hearts of your many fans. Thanks for digging so deep in your song writing, and using your gifts.
I am such a huge fan and this song encompasses every single thing I love about this band.
The forerunners of the voice of our generation. Continue your amazing work!
I was just in St. Augustine and spent more than a few nights listening to our boys. I've never felt more in tune with a band.
Amazing. Love the “Birthdays, cars and pets” line
My mom was born in St. Augustine, and I spent many summers there, when we would go back to visit her parents & our Florida family. This one speaks to my soul.
Thank you.
Soothing music and beautiful lyrics. So nice I listened twice...St Augustine looks beautiful day or night
These lyrics are so true about so many people in small towns all around the world. A magical, melancholy song . Thank you . It woud be great if you were to release a book of lyrics from your songs . so many of them stand alone only to be made even more magical when the music is added.
Oh gosh, yes. The Complete Taylor Goldsmith would be something to behold.
Thanks for the thought,
Casey
Lee, tasteful piano on this one. Really like the two or three note high run you do at the very end. Enjoyed the way you used this understated approach on ‘Time Flies...’ as well, adds a lot without having to be at the front.
Finally! After hearing this live a bunch, it’s so great to finally have an official recording. Awesome!
Amazing imagery and musicality, another notch in the belt of one of the best songwriters of our generation.
Oh man, i've needed a good cry for months. this song is so raw. thank you for laying yourself out there.
My hometown. Thanks for this.
Made me cry 😢
I don't remember all of the words to this song from the first time I heard it.....but I'll never forget the way they made me feel
Beautiful song! Sounds a bit like “Moon in the Water” and an acoustic version of “All Your Favorite Bands.”
Agree on the sound, but lyrics and sentiment remind me of Christmas in L.A. w/ the Killers. The reflection and anchoring in a known environment....
S T Oh yeah, definitely similar themes/sentiments.

I live right up the road from St Augustine and head down there regularly. Nice tribute to a not-so-well-known gem.
I still remember the smell of St. John’s Bay all the way from Minnesota. Such a powerful song!
Beautiful song and a wonderful video. It captures St. Augustine so well. I'm going to have to take a short drive over there as soon as the world settles down.
Man, I live here (N. Florida) and I'm in St. Auggie all the time, I'd love to know the story behind this song, it's amazing! I've been a Dawes fan for years.
Spent many spring breaks with my grandparents there in St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied city in the country, and enjoyed it all. What a truly masterful melody and beautiful guitar work. Covid needs to end so I can go see these guys play live
My favorite band singing about my favorite place to be❤️
Beautiful
Absolutely beautiful.
Dumb luck and a secret stash of Coors, my life in a nutshell.
Gorgeous!
God bless Dawes!
So beautiful.
Your words hit hard! Great song, Dawes.
Taylor Goldsmith more like Taylor Wordsmith!!
You must be related to me
Beautiful!
Great song...sung wonderfully
Been waiting for this one!!
Great tune. Thanks again for your exceptionally awesome lyrics
Wow great song
Lovely work, Taylor.
This song is beautiful. Taylor may be the best songwriter since Dylan
Amazing song. Thank you. This is what you call a singer-songwriter stuff :)
lovely stuff.
Man, this is amazing. You're really talented.
LOVE YOUR MUSIC AND THIS SONG!! DEFF A TEARJERKER!✌🏻☮️❤️💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯❤️
I've been guided by my barroom appetites.
Good storytelling Taylor
My god, they just get better.
Just hear this on Jed Beaudoin's 'Strange Currency" show on KMUW.
I bet a lot of us felt like we were looking in a mirror while listening.
Wow! This is a gem guys! The simplicity corresponding with the lyrical complexity is so profound. Thank you!
Lots of Jason Isbell vibes in this one
I don't see it, but it is produced by one of Jason Isbell's producers, though!
Two of my favs!
Far far better than Jason Isbell
@@CeerCol Not necessarily so; you're probably just pissed off with Isbell's more in your face politics.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 Maybe... Music is a matter of taste. Weak men's music isn't to my taste. Isbell has his share of fans and you are all welcome to him. I'll stick with people that aren't ashamed of who they are. Lol this is an old post... Had to dig to remember what it was about.
How did a California guy write this? Awesome songwriting.
What is Dawes ties to the South (besides Mandy Moore)? They’ve mentioned Georgia, Alabama, and now Florida in their music, and I find it interesting out of a LA based band.
Yeah, they mention Charlottesville too...they seem enchanted by the south...
Well, for one they recorded the album in Nashville, TN! (Not written, but there’s some country inspiration going on here!)
I think in addition, a lot of the classic literature that Taylor reads and is inspired by is southern in nature.
Tom A. Nook That makes sense.
He's a storyteller and lyricist. Look for a setting and a mood or feeling can come alive.
Great song.. I just had to do it at an open mic...
Beautiful! This is Taylor's 'Oh My Sweet Carolina' 👍
I don't think Taylor would necessarily appreciate the Ryan Adams reference.
#goodluckwithwhatever
Who in the world are the 41 people giving this a thumbs down?
Little sniffle at 1:08
Yeah st augustine at night is alright if you avoid all the tourists
DEEP DIG
I think that he was on his way to Key West to meet Bob Dylan

Who's here after going on an American Airlines flight?
Is dad working later every year because money is tight or because he doesn't care for being at home?
Isn’t this an LA band primarily? Lol
Florida claims them now. They’re ours
I think the album was probably written some on the road, and then the album was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee! When you travel and see the country like a band does, you are inspired by a lot of different places and stories.
That's a little more like it, but not quite Still missing the Umpf of North Hills with your bro on drums and wylie on bass and that guy you fired for whatever reason on the keys.
Was that a confederate flag in the first shot?
No - it’s a US flag banner/bunting.
You mean the Stalinists haven't banned it by now?
barf. cheap trash.
