    The bravery of people who choose to go into a bad storm at sea in a small boat to try to rescue people in peril is beyond words.
    Those who then lose their own lives the nation owes them the very very utmost respect and honour .Those who do so and come home safe we also should honour to the utmost and be so grateful they came home again as heroes

    He is without doubt someone of great erudition yet who is immediately understandable and has knowledge to impart in a style that is warm and accessible. A Scots treasure and at the same time a treasure for Britain. His gentle approach is in sharp contrast to more strident voices, yet carries more weight without laboured effort.

    The Ness of Brodgar is stunning, inspirational and given its setting in the serenely beautiful mainland of Orkney, it should be a bucket list destination for everyone. As you will guess, I have been there and I loved it, the atmosphere, the friendly natives, the history spanning the Neolithic through the Vikings and encompassing the World Wars, there is so much to see. The Iron Age is well represented too with Brochs to visit. I will return at some point as it recharged my cultural batteries too, gorgeous place.

    I have always appreciated Mr Oliver with his TV programmes, like Coast. However he has risen in my expectations, by including Greenwich (#3) as a top place to visit, I am from there, and the park and museum are brilliant - there is a lot of other things to see and do in Greenwich also.

      @john jack He doesn't support Scottish separatism, that's all.
      The comment you replied so is rather silly, but you would seem to approve if only Mr Oliver were a separatist.

    • @andrewwigglesworth3030
      @andrewwigglesworth3030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @john jack Don't play that that kind of ignorance, you know what I mean by Scottish separatism.
      Scotland is not "under English rule", Scotland is not a colonial country, to claim that it is is an insult to those who suffered the depredations of the *British* Empire.
      Scotland was a coloniser, a part of the "British" in the phrase British Empire.

    • @andrewwigglesworth3030
      @andrewwigglesworth3030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @john jack Jeez, Scots Nats are such a load of historical revisionists, Scottish exceptionalist revisionists.
      Scotland went through the industrial revolution just like the rest of Britain and had *precisely* the same relationship with Empire as the rest of Britain.
      "Britain" is a geographical term at heart. It wasn't invented by "the English." What a stupid thing to say.
      Of course not all Scots do agree with you, so your claim for what "the Scots" think is a disingenuous and a nationalist lie. Remember 2014? Of course you do.
      Scotland was not colonised, it was a coloniser. That is a bare fact. Scotland is not under colonialist rule, as I said, that is a bloody insult to those that were subject to Scottish colonialism as a constituent part of British colonialism.
      There is no such singular thing as "the English" or "the Scottish", that's just a nationalist nonsense. We have a class divided society, and it's got bugger-all to do with whether you're Scottish, English or Welsh.

    • @andrewwigglesworth3030
      @andrewwigglesworth3030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @john jack And there you still are, raging on about "the English", "the Scots" and even "Scots natives" who you magically divine voted Yes.
      Just a little screwed up ball of grudge and malice raging against "the English."
      And how little you are.
      There is no Scottish commonality, just as there is no English or Welsh commonality. There's not oppression just because people are English, Scottish or Welsh. It's in your silly bigoted nationalist imagination.
      We live in a class based society, and the greatest bond that I wish to foster is that of solidarity between all the working class people of this island, against the *real* oppressors. Not some reactionary nationalist garbage that distracts from that reality.

    Aye Mr Oliver , go and visit Greenwich and the Gen Wolfe statue, the General Wolfe who praised the fighting skills of the Highlanders under his command and went on to state that "it is of no great mischief if they fall" Hardly surprising as he previously took part in the slaughter at Culloden and the genocidal aftermath. You no doubt know this as you are a (unionist) historian ?
