    “Extra points by killing her” LMFAO! They had NO idea how this game worked! The wanted stars are supposed to serve as a consequence for the mayhem by design, there’s a BUNCH more to the GTA games than rampaging and murder

    I wish they interviewed me at the time. Me and my buddies loved this game . Countless hours of gameplay and a superb story . And in the last 20 years neither I or anyone I know who played the game has gone on a murderous rampage which brought 5 or 6 stars of wanted level.

    This ended up sounding exactly what I figured any news agency would have reported about this game remember kids personal accountability doesn't exist as long as you can blame some form of media

    • @RaymondJiang444
      @RaymondJiang444 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What are you talking about? The reporting seemed pretty balanced to me. They even said there's no clear link between violent videos and violent behavior.

    • @apictureoffunction
      @apictureoffunction 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@RaymondJiang444 it's not even closed to balanced reporting, there's maybe two people in the entire news segment who state anything reasonable about the game, and neither of them are the reporters. In fact, most of the adults in this news segment blatantly lie several times, claiming that you "get points" for killing people, or for having sex with prostitutes before killing them. Not to mention that they try and push the narrative that the kids "have difficulty separating fantasy from reality" when playing the game, when all the kids were saying is that the game is addicting and that playing difficult sections is tense and gives them an adrenaline rush. Right from the very start of the segment, it's clear that the reporters have a biased narrative that they're trying to push, and they spend the vast majority of their time trying tk sensationalize, exaggerate, and villify the game as a potentially dangerous, damaging past time. They probably spent a couple or a few hours interviewing these kids, and cherry picked as many "disturbing" sounding quotes as they could. There's a reason why they led the segment with the kid stating that his goal was to kill as many people as possible and get as many stars as possible, and even claimed that was "the point" of the game, even though that statement was used out of context

    • @RaymondJiang444
      @RaymondJiang444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mr. Waffles See, I never really got that impression watching the story. Or maybe I just wasn’t as swayed by their reporting, who knows. Although I’m not really an avid video gamer tbh so I’ll take your word for it on the lies about how points are earned during the game itself.
      As you said, it seemed to me the teenagers interviewed liked the video game because of the adrenaline rush it gives them and how it provides a mental escape from whatever is going on in their life, and is not indicative of them being violent or aggressive kids. Maybe there was a slight bias towards ‘the violent video games causes violent behavior in real life’ side, but nothing that felt blatant, in my view.

      @@apictureoffunction you're completely right, balanced my a**. It's funny to watch now, but also frustrating as hell since it brings back so many memories from that era.
      Exactly this kind of ignorant reports were the only kind of video game coverage my mother was exposed to, even in my country in Europe, which forced me to hide my GTA 3 copy and play it in secret.
      I was lucky enough to be able to buy it after lying to the clerk by telling him that my mother was cool with it. I'm playing it again as we speak, still one of my favorite games, but it's funny to think back to how extremely controversial it was.
      No one cares today that I was able to buy it when I was 12 years old, but it was a big deal back then.

    • @apictureoffunction
      @apictureoffunction 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@michaelkjellander9370 I was fortunate that my parents were mostly okay with me playing rated M games. Well more like, I played my games in my bedroom by myself and they didn't really know what was going on in the games I was playing for the most part. Although one time my dad did come in when I was playing GTA3, and he watched me steal a car, drive around for a bit and hit a jump, then he tried to drive for about a minute or two (lol) before handing the controller back, and then he watched me do a mission where I had to go beat some guy up on the docks and grab his money.
      It's not much, but other than playing some Mario and Duck Hunt (NES was the first console we got when I was 5), that's the only time I can think of that my dad ever really sat down and watched me play a game, which is my absolute favorite hobby

    I was 14 when it came out. a year older than these kids. Also I wanted to play the game not because i was "angry" or that i wanted to let off steam. I simply wanted to play it because I loved technology in general and was amazed that there is a game like this at the time. I also loved the mafia theme and the Italian opera music station. Non of what the physiologists' analyzed or described was what I felt as a 14 year old kid. I did not feel that I wanted to play the game because "i wanted to play the very thing that was disturbing to toughen myself up"(we have ISIS beheading vids for that lol). Now that analysis takes the cake lol the game wasn't even disturbing to me in the first place. I was simply playing it for the immersion factor and the impressive vibes it gave through its audiovisual artistry. That is what I truly felt as an underage 14 year old playing the game.

      @@YOTSUBA_desu Violence in what way though? Sure we loved the action as kids and we were curious to pop heads here and there with a sniper but that wasn’t why we mainly played the game. If you played gta as a child just to kill things and ignore the actual story and missions then that is a psychological problem which many kids who have broken families, grow up with. It is mostly an anger at a parent or both parents, which becomes reflective on how you play video games and reflective on your everyday life behaviors in general.

    • @YOTSUBA_desu
      @YOTSUBA_desu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arab Pride Obviously the missions tend to be the goal, (sometimes you just want to go on a 5-6 star killing spree though) but at the same time they function as a catalyst for violence; a way to channel the violence into something that is interesting and seemingly productive. In fact, I even recall rampage missions existing. If you only wanted to complete missions then there are better games than gta.

But we definitely knew it was just a fictional game and we could never get away with that stuff in real life. But it was our escape, that's what a video game is. As a kid, I was into GTA because I was really into crime movies and shows. I loved The Sopranos, Scarface, Goodfellas, Casino, you name it. And GTA did amazing by putting all of that into one game, and on top of that, it was so revolutionary to have this whole open world city where you can do anything you want and go anywhere you want. Never seen anything like that before coming off the N64/PS1 era.

This game was the most revolutionary to ever hit the shelves when it came out in 2001, no other graphics team had done something this cool. Not to mention still in 2024 no other game has captured the same eerie feeling this one did. Absolutely LOVE this game.❤️

    If I put GTA3 on now and played it, I would remember every street, every alley.
    I--we--spent this time on the game and we know it in and out as if it were a real city.
    Same prob goes with every GTA city since then.

    LOL the idea people wanted to play GTA 3 because it was violent. People played it because it was a revolutionary open world game where you could just do what you want. It was the game I dreamed of back in the 80s when I was playing NES games where most of the time you just went right in the screen.

    This game was never meant to be played by kids. Still, a lot of us played when we're around 10+/-. Personally played it at age of 12 when released on PC, but never thought of this game as a killing-simulator or something similar. I always liked to drive and listen to the radios.

    What aspect of this game rewards you for shooting someone in the head as opposed to the body? I’ve played this game from start to finish numerous times over the years and have never encountered such a reward 🤔🤔

      I remember that when the last GTA came out I saw on the news (I live in Italy) a reportage where they explained that the goal of GTA is to kill as many pedestrians as you can and the player who kills the most wins (wins what? i don't know you'll have to ask to the reporter).
      So you can see that in many countries videogames (violent ones expecially) are sometimes misunderstood by the general news.
      At least here I appreciate that the woman at the end said that there's no proven correlation between being violent and playing violent videogames.

    And here we are now with GTA being one of the largest selling entertainment properties, entrenched in pop culture and Rockstar being almost unrivaled as a game developer. Still recall seeing this on a buddy’s PS2 and asking for one that Christmas. The irony is I’m a gamer parent and I know when the time comes that GTA comes in rotation that I can play it with him and explain the seperation between reality, games and the freedom the sandbox provides. A generation of gamers who grew up with this will be raising there children not with a concept of trying to ‘hide’ this, but explain the nature of video games and entertainment and where those lines stop crossing. The other irony is how popular franchises like Fortnite is that I know don’t understand, but hopefully can experience with them
