  • Fixing up a slightly worse for wear beer engine (hand pump) that I picked up second hand. It needed a new pump diaphragm and a general service and clean up. Hopefully the things I learnt here might help you out if you are looking to repair or service your own. This was my first attempt at this so any comments advice and constructive criticism are welcome!

    Hey I'm the guy you bought that from. I'm so glad to see her back to working condition after all those years sat idle. I'm also glad my suggestion of a silicone valve worked in the end. You did a beautiful job of the brass polishing and yeah, that blemish you couldn't get out bugged the hell out of me too!
    Here's to many more years of beers poured through. Cheers!

    Perfect timing, very helpful, have just found one of these down here in NZ after 2 years of searching. Did you lubricate any of the seals?
    I'll strip mine down as well and hope it all works.
    RLBS recommended pulling warm not hot line cleaner thru the engine to clean the inside and then some starsan before use.
    Look forward to you pulling a real cask ale on it.

      Plus, why would you pay money for a working beer engine that you could start using right away when you can piss away a whole two months of weekends in your shop building one! I have added this to my list of shop projects. Unfortunately that puts it about a year and a half out.
      Enjoyed the video.

    Excellent video. Many thanks for sharing. Our local village hall bought a second hand beer engine a year or so ago and we haven't had the confidence to dismantle it - we just cleaned up the outside and sterilised the insides before using it. It has been working fine so far but, this week, has developed an issue whereby the pump "sucks back" the beer from the glass when the handle is returned to the vertical position after each pull. We can get round this in the short term by moving the glass down, away from the swan neck each time the handle is returned to vertical, and then putting the glass back on the pull down again but it would be nice to solve the problem. I do feel confident enough to attempt to dismantle the pump having seen your video but does the problem I've described sound like it could be the diaphragm or should I be looking for something else being the cause?
    Thanks again

    • @DudesBrews
      @DudesBrews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dave, yes it sounds like some kind of issue with the piston/diaphragm, probably either sticking which could just require a good clean or maybe perishing and losing its flexibility perhaps. There are lots of different versions of beer engines but the working principle is the same for all of them so shouldn't be too hard to work out if you go in for a closer look! Cheers

    Got an older type one which works very well. There is a slight dribble from inside somewhere which I will tackle in due course. However- there are 2 springs inside at the top which aren't connected to anything- they just hang there. Any ideas? There does not appear to be anything they can attach to. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks. Great Vid BTW.

    I'm working to pour beer from Sankey keg (after making sure it is with low carbonation) using beer engine just like the one you have. I succeed to do it peaty well but have too much foam and need to put the pint glass to sit. Have you tried this or have any idea what may be the solution for the foaming? do you have any trips and tricks to make it better?
