The screws on the boiler are loctite. To loosen the adhesive, heat Loctite to 200 degrees Celsius. A heat gun is not enough

Yep. I found an Isomac Millenium being sold locally on Ebay. It was listed as "not working", but given that it's an E61 machine I figured that it would be an easy fix. Won the auction at a great price and after doing a function check, concluded that it had a bad vibration pump. $40 bucks and an hour of work later I was the proud owner of a beautiful Italian beast that has been turning out delicious espresso for over a year.

Amazing takedown, Lance! That Gaggia didn’t stand a chance. Makes me want to unearth mine from whatever box it is hiding in since I got the BDB nine years ago. Besides what you showed us, I keep a magnet in my parts cups (in case of spills) and label the wiring and tubes in case the photos don’t make sense. Looking forward to Part 2!

Been repairing old crappy espresso machines for years. It can be fun. The best part is that you can get decent milk drinks out of them, total expenses being around 50 euro. Great entry level! And when you fix old crappy machines you get good experience to repair and maintain your fancy espresso machine. So it is kind of win - win to start with crappy used machines.

Love it. I’ve been doing this since getting into espresso. My last fixer up was an older Ascaso Steel Uno. Just upgraded to a Bezzera BZ07 that needed some work done on the boiler. Definitely better value going the restoration path and so satisfying too. There’s the added sense of achievement and familiarity with the machine that you just don’t get with buying new.

  • @MrRuzdy

Just started watching but absolutely love this one already ;)
Back into espresso for ~4 years after many years earlier I gave up because reading all those forums created lots of anxiety due to budget needed for everything...
Now ran through many incredible machines. Starting from kitchen aid, few delongi dedicas, sage bambino plus, gaggia classic (classic one! ;) ), two nuova simonelli (oscar 2 and musica lux), ascaso steel duo pid and finally CREM one profiler (incredible machine, but right now waits for second service and musica is back in service).
Every machine I have bought was broken and I bought those really cheaply. It is increadibly satifying to bring back staff back to live.
All of my machines serves now either family or other espresso aficionados around Poland :)
Actually wanted to make few DIY restoration tutorials for espresso machines but never found enough time and motivation. Maybe this year ;)
Keep up the great work and thanks for this one Lance!

I’ve bought my first used espresso machine 18 years ago, an ISOMAC TEA. I’ve done small services over the years myself. The electronics failed two years ago and I took the time to dig in and renew several parts and did a full service. It’s incredible that you can still buy every spare part of these old beasts. And with a little help of TH-cam, you can fix them yourself. Hopefully without a dremel.

Thank you for these restoration videos. The videos on hunting down used but good gear. And videos highlighting that cheaper new gear doesn't have to be bad even if some of it takes a small bit of accessorizing (most would do that with expensive gear regardless, so the cost is still there either way). It is nice to know that you will tell us when gear is cheap vs inexpensive so that people will be less likely to waste their money. Sometimes you want high quality gear but don't have a healthy budget to match!
As an aside, I've bought four ECP models (various) from off-price retailers over the past year for friends and family after watching Tom's video on them. I've got three from Gabes for $50 each when still in the states and a Dedica for $70! Others from used markets.
This sort of thing is fun for me as I grew up with a grandfather that was into restoring tube radios (short wave and the like), and it reminds me of that. And is a way to share a hobby with family and friends. So again, it is great that you are helping us explore options!
Anyway, once again, thank you for all of the great videos.

Hah! This is really cool to see this idea getting so much attention! ^^
I have encountered something that was far from this bad but also still very messy and terrible with a Rancilio Silvia V1 for 200CHF.
This machine is as old as me and while it still has problems (mainly temperature), all of them will be solved with the Gaggiuino I am doing to it (tho one won't be fixed and that is it's sheer space it takes). ^^
Just gotta wait for the last parts...

This will be a good watch.
I have very limited money to play with, so I purchased a 12 month old rancilio with pid installed for next to nothing after patiently waiting and watching on marketplace. For the grinder I bought dirt cheap ex Cafe luigi and freshened it up with paint, led light, new burrs, bellow with lid and 3d printed a single dosing face.
    Does the job well enough

I picked up an Nuova Simonelli Oscar i for $200 (cad). I spent about $100 on repairs (new pump, gasket and few other things). I did all the work myself with no experience. I made sure I chose a machine that used readily available parts and had a good amount of resources online. It was easy and fun.
Now I have a machine that makes great coffee, that I can keep working for years. I might even try an upgrade like installing a PID.

I initially thought buying a La Pavoni Professional that was cheaply to restore, but diving into the restoration rabbit hole and customize it turned out to be far more expensive than I expected. That said, restoring an iconic piece to match your own taste creates an emotional connection with the machine, and that’s priceless.

I didn't go this route personally because I didn't want to deal with a lemon which potentially COULD happen, and you can get a reconditioned Gaggia classic from Whole Latte love for $350. I didn't do that either, I went Aliexpress and am ecstatic...So far. for a little less than used I got a better machine, HOWEVER under the right circumstances rescuing an older machine is a fantastic idea. Those older boiler machine are built to last, there's ton of documentation online, and parts are plentiful. They're tanks a lot of them, like old Kitchenaid mixers, you've got a potential diamond in the rough. although that machine you've got there is my worst nightmare, you're right it's not impossible. I love that you (and notably Tom's coffee corner) take the dread out of opening your machine up, they're meant for it, lesser "appliances" not so much. These are not mere appliances destined for the land fill, they're machines, meant to be worked on. I might have tried if I'd seen this I think. I'm installing an OPV valve on my new machine, and I think it'll be damn near perfect. Thank you sir, very cool.

I've been commenting on a couple of videos promoting second hand machines.... And in the meantime I actually managed to get myself an original BDB (BES900) for 250 euros. It is quite an old machine but everything on it works. A month later I bought the same machine but with a leaky hot water spout (most common issue that is easily repairable) for 130 euro. I bought the second one literally for spare parts because a new boiler for it costs 150 euro. I bought a full second machine for that money, albeit with the caveat that it is also old and is leaky.

I wonder if the gunk is from milk back channeling into the boiler from the steam wand after it was shut down. If you don't purge and clean the steam wand after shutdown, it will act as a reverse syphon and suck fluid back into to the machine. If the wand gaskets start wearing, it probably would allow the milk to eventually get into the boiler.

A benefit of buying a used true prosumer machine is parts are very often available. I bought a couple used E61 HX machines on ebay and all the parts were available, so they worked well for 20 years before I sold them to upgrade. They aren't that complicated, so even taking them apart (take pictures) and cleaning/replacing/fixing isn't that big of a deal IMO

The Breville 860xl (gastroback advance pro g) has a tiny problem where after years of working perfectly, owners unplug the machine, or there is a temporary power outage and the machine no longer turns on. Problem is a 12cent capacitor. Solder out the old and replace with the new capacitor and the machine works perfectly again.

Hi! I recently came across a great esspresso machine that no one is talking about - quick mill pop up!
It can do pressure profiling at about 1300 euro. I hope you find some time to look into it

14:27 is the red high temp RTV common place in espresso components? I use that stuff to seal my 2-stroke dirt bike exhaust and DOUBT its food safe.

It is not common. I clean it off and replace with food safe thermal paste

I’m excited to try to fix one for my wife. Does Gaggia sell replacement parts? If you can a longer step-by-step of a full restore would be very cool. Thx! Subscribed.
