In the best known version (by Perrault), Bluebeard is indeed killed by the brothers of his last wife (who survive the whole adventure). They are warned by their sister, come back as fast as they could and, being soldiers (a musketeer and a dragoon), they chase Bluebeard all around his castle before cornering and slaughtering him.

You should try looking at Baltic dark legends! I'm from Lithuania, a country that became Christian in the 15th century. Up until then we had been pagan's which lead to us having a lot of dark stories. As a child I remember hearing Oskaras Milašius's (Oscar Milosz) "lithuanian stories" being read to me, such dark and ugly stories. Every story features a death at least, that as a kid I used to cry without pause. For example - there's these swamp women we call Laumės. Here's one short story I can recall from my memories : There was a woman that went out to work in the fields and forgot her baby there, since she was very exhausted. She went back home and noticed that her child is absent so got immensely scared and went to look for it. When she came back to the fields, she found her baby wrapped in new diapers and calmly sleeping. Very happily she felt greatfull for the spirits for not taking her baby away (as there is a superstition that if you leave your baby unattended, Laumės can it away) and told about this happening to the village people. Her neighbour heard about want happened and decided to try it herself, as she was very poor, and went to the fields with her baby with hope that the same will happen. She left him on purpose. She came back home and waited for a bit with joy thinking that her baby will be well taken care of. She then went out and saw a Laumė in the fields hushing the baby, singing an erie lullaby, and the child with it's dislocated head dangling from the Laumės arms.
The lost children legend reminded me of an episode from the Simpsons! Marge and Homer were farmers. They were broke, so Homer took them to the forest to abandon them. Bart and Lisa even stumble upon the dead bodies of their older selves...( Sorry if my English is bad. ) Anyone else?
the Bluebeard myth is quite known to take inspiration from a real terrible french character, his name is Gilles de Rais. And despite helping Joan of Arc through the 100year war he is an even worse character than Bluebeard
The White Lady haunts many cultures. Growing up in Cucamonga California, I and my sister have seen her. The sightings and the legend are well known in the Chicano culture. Her feet did not touch the ground, white flowing grown. Her eyes wicked, very wicked.
I think the French Revolution did to French mythology what the Industrial Revolution did to English mythology... it made us view these myths as 'superstition'.
@@Sawrattan I blame the " age of enlightenment' and the "age of reason" for perverting them. Prior to those two titles, legends were once known as facts.
@@doverh3 yes true that also, I think Enlightenment/Reason killed the spirit of mythology, and Revolutions killed the communities who believed in them.
Barbe-bleu? I've heard of that one. Although there are different versions of the story. Usually, it's the same until they unlock the door. The version I've heard of was that when they put the key in the lock, and they took it out, it was dipped in blood, and no matter how much they tried, they couldn't remove the blood stain. So they called their brothers, and they waited for Bluebeard, and when he started going into his blind rage, the brothers ambushed him and killed him.
9:37 Indeed, the story of the white ladies is spread across countries where French is spoken. The white ladies have a general name, though is known to bring bad luck if you say it, so we generally refer at them as "the sisters". They aren't evil spirits, they won't even show up to good men, also they would bless and help the women. Their target are only men who wronged before a woman
