Music, like all art; is subjective, but I understand your frustration because I share it. In my day to day life I pine to connect with those who share my musical interests, but often find myself disappointed when they are into what I describe as 'basic blues'. Blues undeniably plays a central role in the family tree of rock, metal and jazz; ergo prog as well, but blues in isolation is pretty unsatisfying to my ears. I love the mix and the variety of styles involved with DT. Yes, I realise modern DT is mostly prog-metal, but within that umbrella a lot of fun is to be had.

Petrucci says something like that in the virtual album release party. I think its in the documental that begins at 2:13.14 but cant remember the moment
A lot of that happens in all the album really. Every song progresses seemlessly, every set of verse makes a progression that is noticeable but delicate at the same time. I dont know either how they pull those things off but a lot of care and thought has been poured in this piece of work, and its amazing.
The feeling you are getting starts from a pedal tone being played on the guitar and bass - the repetitive root note tells us where "home" is tonally but not what larger chords are being used. This album is already a classic among all DT albums for me, its just so MAJESTIC! The Astonishing was not for me, Distance over time much better, but somehow inhomogenous, AVFTTOTW is good as a whole, and in every single detail!
Very important to point: Petrucci was really inspired in this album. Along with DT album he recorded LT3 and his second Terminal Velocity. All this time creating and playing on "side projects" with absolutely sure enhanced JP ideas for this album.
My favourite from the album since day 1, the heavy riff at the start is just gorgeous Myung again making God Tier lyrics I love how it says "you're only halfway there" exactly when you're halfway in the song

There's a reason DT has been my favorite band since 1992, this song shows why. Really like hearing my boy Mangini out in front a little more. I've been a fan of his since Annihilator and always felt he was held back a little in the first few albums.
This album is wonderful. This song is unbelievably good, and this video is perfect. I am loving the lyrics on the new album and EVERYONE in the band is doing such an amazing job.
James sounds amazing. One good thing about no touring is that he got to rest his voice. Just saw Metallica and that James sounded better than ever also. Hope you're feeling as good as you sound James. See you soon.
Killer song. I haven't listened to a lot of DT in a while. They're still sounding phenomenal. This song reminds me of a lot of things from Awake, especially some of the chord movements.
My thoughts after the interview of Saturday: JP put the producer in front the guitar player, trying to make all the instruments well mixed. If you look at the past, JP spent a lot of time in 20 years studing his sound and eventually it got bigger and thicker (like his byceps) and already in LTE3 I remember Jordan telling when "the guitar player that has a sound wall bigger than my house, asks Can you hear the keyboard parts well...". I'd say that together with the Mix/new DTHQ/Production, the existence of parallel projects made this album have a soul, because JP and JR could switch mindset for this album, as if LTE3 was an escape valve for technicalities. Also the fact that James could mute the others in his studio and listen to his own ideas, made all verses and chorus very catchy this time. Awesome album!
@@michaelglindmyer3336 I agree, Andy Sneap's mix changed the sound for the better the most because they were recording the albums good enough each and every time before (they always had recording engineers with them, the best mics, nice rooms and gear etc.). @@Trishkaz I'm not English either but I'll try to answer anyway. It's something I've seen used mainly in this specific context but there's a reason behind it. Since the album is a single piece of art on its own and not just a collection of tracks, "my favorite of the album" would sound slightly wrong. this album is sooo consistent I am not able to pick one song as my favorite...each one is amazing,,, but this song has such unique vibe that I cant describe it... just love it.... The angel of balance, keeps you alive! ... keeps you strong.
Myung's lyrics is always amazing
This album is already a classic among all DT albums for me, its just so MAJESTIC! The Astonishing was not for me, Distance over time much better, but somehow inhomogenous, AVFTTOTW is good as a whole, and in every single detail!
Best usage of an 8-string guitar, ever. A great track from a superb record. 🤘
That "You're only halfway there" at the halfway point of the song. I love these guys. XD
6:37~6:59
How can a guitar solo be built upon such a wicked riff and fit so well?
Beautiful. Goosebumps every time.
petrucci's fitness routine + quality beard products = excellent riffage and solos
or something
It's called jazz
@@eaglemaster7wrong. It's called "progressive"
Still heavy, one of the best bands of all time, greetings from Brazil Dream Theater!
曲の構成、ドラム、リズム、パターン。まさに、天才というより、人間の能力の限界をも感じる凄さ…!!!真似しようが、無い!神。
Very important to point: Petrucci was really inspired in this album. Along with DT album he recorded LT3 and his second Terminal Velocity. All this time creating and playing on "side projects" with absolutely sure enhanced JP ideas for this album.
Amazing how his work is so original in these 3 different albums/mindsets.
Thanks to his reunion with Portnoy I guess lmao
THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS SONG! Feeling like I am the one with Dream Theater! 🤘🏻
Neo? 😎😂🤣
Very well said!!🤘

Absolutely astonishing hihat work by Mike Mangini, love how the channels were panned with each different cymbal
Absolute beast
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👽
From the “Images and Words” up to now I appreciate this incredible band!
James voice sounds so natural and unstrained in every track on this album. I love it!
best album from mr mangini era!
Because they finally allowed Mike to be himself on this album. He killed it on this album
My favourite from the album since day 1, the heavy riff at the start is just gorgeous
Myung again making God Tier lyrics
I love how it says "you're only halfway there" exactly when you're halfway in the song
Such a great song. The whole album is great. If you don't know Dream Theater.... Take The Time
It’s only a matter of time until they do
that reference....
Your gunna get caught in a web.
Just be careful to be In the presence of enemies, cuz at 6:00 o'clock there is a Sleeping Giant
If you don't you will do Repentance
WOW ! Absolutely AMAZING!!! As a mastering engineer, I am Blown Away!!! It sounds amazing, the musicians are excellent, they definitely MASTER THEIR ART. And the video clip is breathtaking. It is great to listen to artists who master their ART. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! No I need to see you guys live in Montreal.

If I ever win the lottery this is the track I will be playing as I smash the house up with a bat (taking care to leave smashing up the stereo till last).
Mangini kicks hard, mixing in another level and Petrucci is riding the lightings.
DT and Andy Sneap brought us a great and delicious album!!
Dream Theater is still bringing that sound, even after all of these years
This song is so heavy that even Mangini's drum is 8-strings tuned
Welcome Back Dream Theater .
Tremeeeendo! Awesome! I think this album is in the top tier of DT albums. It feels different, original, very prog, strong and heavy. Really good video also.. its not common to see a 9 minutes long quality music video. Congrats DT 👏🤘
Indonesia jawa timur situbondo 😎🤘
Kediri East Java here...
That drum groove at 2:50! So good! Love the hi hats!
This song began to deeply remind me of Surrender To Reason... I thought it was a coincidence, but then I figured "Wait, Myung wrote the lyrics for that track as well!" It's cool to think of this one as a sequel.
I like how the mix respects Myung's bass and gives space to it. The guitar and keys recedes slightly to the background various times for the bass.
Please Always Created Song like This, That's why World Need Dream Theater.... Special Mr.Mangini is Amazing & Totaly Blend with DT in this song
AWAKEN THE CHUG! Killer 8 string riffs!
petrucci's fitness routine + quality beard products = excellent riffage and solos
or something

Really enjoying this album; love John Myung's bass tone especially this time around. Great job guys! Hopefully I will be able to see you live.
"You made it to the top, just to find out you're only halfway there - all along missing the point of the journey." This just might be the story of my life.
My favorite song on this absolutely brilliant album! THANK YOU DT!
You spelled mediocre wrong.
@@MAGAMAN , gtfo here, you horrid troll. Come back with better material.
The best rock band with excellence in all instruments! The most complete band in the world. The best!
This is the best Dream Theater djent song ever)))
7:44 to 7:49. Those progressions are kickin' it right back! What a turnaround! Bravo guys!
The guitar tone! So heavy!!
So muddy you mean
Chocolate cake you mean
big chungus you mean
@@Cestariarts yep 8 string guitars sound like shit imo I still prefer 6 and 7 string guitars running through Marshall JCM800 amps.
Gotta love the little “lost not forgotten” bit before the second verse I guess it is…beautiful…
Isobelle, you are right. 🤗🤗🤗
This album is the best of Dream theater in more than a decade now. It really is full of surprises.
Exactly! Still can't decide if it's the best since ADTOE or since Octavarium but it's up there!

Just curious?
Which album do You think is better ?
I can't think of one ?
I've been listening since 1992 images
A Dramatic Turn of Events is better.
To me, DOT was better, and nothing touches Awake....
@@aarondiaz1433 '92 also. I say DOT
James sounds amazing. One good thing about no touring is that he got to rest his voice. Just saw Metallica and that James sounded better than ever also. Hope you're feeling as good as you sound James. See you soon.
double James
YEAH YEAHHHHHH
@@H982FKL-TG James from America and James from Canada
best riff and song from the album. my personal favorite from the album
That was unbelievably good. The riffs. The rythms. The arrangement. We got the whole DT experience with this one. Absolutely fantastic
The first 2 minutes or so feel like prog metal and jazz. Well done, DT. This is something special!
Petruccies creativity breakthrough in this masterpiece track, he’s endless for sure
Awaken The Master is such a killer name for a song and the song itself lives up to that.
Killer song. I haven't listened to a lot of DT in a while. They're still sounding phenomenal. This song reminds me of a lot of things from Awake, especially some of the chord movements.
And considering they went from 6 to 7 string on that album it makes even more sense
Great composition.
It definitely sounds better.
*Mangini (darn autocorrect)
I think it’s more about Andy sneap’s mix, not JP being the producer.
@@michaelglindmyer3336 I agree, Andy Sneap's mix changed the sound for the better the most because they were recording the albums good enough each and every time before (they always had recording engineers with them, the best mics, nice rooms and gear etc.). The mixing can really lift the sound quality more than people think and matters a lot if you want to have a great-sounding final record.
@@huberttorzewski generally a great mix but a better than a great production. I will say I liked DOT’s mix as the drums sounded more real, but this mix really takes the band over the hump of bad drum sounds since MP left.
These guys are just amazing. It seems no matter how heavy they rock/groove/crush, it's still all so uplifting. Architects of Awesome.
Your life burns faster!
Awaken The Master !
Master!
Jajaja I know this reference
I've loved dream theater since a young teen. The music always carries my mind away and I find nothing but peace within their songs :) Thank you guys for all your hard work and keeping true to your sound and passion!
Kev, what a great post. I agree - I feel like DT has been one of the very few bands who have made music of the kind that I've really appreciated and enjoyed. It's like life has offered me this enormous feast, but I've only truly enjoyed a few choice meals....
Dream Theater Bring us again into dreams of awesome progressive music with new Album and songs. With advantage of modernization of technology equipment and tool.
I wasn't expecting this! Absolutely weclomed since this my favorite off of the new album, an absolute masterpiece
I'm sorry to bother about this but I'm studying English and my question is how does "favorite off" works? It couldn't be just said "this is my favorite of the new album" without the "off"? Thank you if you could answer me this
@@Trishkaz “this is my favorite song off of the new Album” would be the more “correct” way to say it. He just shortened it in the comment above
@@Trishkaz I'm not English either but I'll try to answer anyway.
It's something I've seen used mainly in this specific context but there's a reason behind it.
Since the album is a single piece of art on its own and not just a collection of tracks, "my favorite of the album" would sound slightly wrong.
"My favorite off of the album" means "my favorite (taken) off of the album", 'cause you're taking in consideration only one part instead of the whole thing
@@igornaimoli7321 thank you very much guys I really appreciate the explanation now I know how to use the word!
Massive progressive DT track, top notch visuals !!!
Apa Apaan ini ! Gk expect bakal ada MV nya Gila ! 👍👍
Just saw them live a couple days ago. I've seen them multiple times and that was the best they've ever sounded.
It’s great that they started working deeper into theory then previous recordings. This one is definitely refreshing.
Haven't been as excited for a DT instrumental part since ADTOE, well done bois
this and answering the call are my favorite off this album, some of the best stuff since ADTOE
This is such a complex masterpiece. Everyone is on fire. Hats off!!
lyrics by John Ro Myung
Hi guys! I am so thankful that I got to work with you guys with Jim Pitulski at Roundtable Entertainment oh so many years ago! Thank you for allowing me to chaperone you in London for the amazing show at Ronnie Scott's in 1995: What an unbelievable experience that was!!!
Great memories
Now this is my favourite song of Dream Theater. CHUG CHUG 8 STRING 💙💙💙💙💙💙
Finding your way
On a frozen path where the air is thin
The angel of balance
Keeps you alive
A flower unfolds
A heartbeat brings new meaning to the universe
The angel of balance
Keeps you strong
Discovering what has been all along
Spinning through life
Lost in the spiral of time
Turning the stone
Circles of darkness and light
Remember hereafter
You made it to the top
Just to find out
You're only halfway there
All along missing the point of the journey
The will of the soul
Like a peak so high
You look inside to rise
Searching out a dream
Climbing, reaching further
And the voices of the angels bring you closer
Spinning through life
Lost in the spiral of time
Turning the stone
Circles of darkness and light
Remember hereafter
Spinning through life
Lost in the spiral of time
Turning the stone
Circles of darkness and light
Spinning through
We balance the heart and the mind
Turning the stone
Embracing the truth that we find
Remember hereafter
The end of a chapter
Awaken the master
