This time-lapse 3D medical animation shows the stations of presentation during labor and childbirth. The animation follows the baby's progress through the mother's birth canal, marking the baby's position by how her head lines up with specific points in the mother's bony pelvis. These points are called vertex positions, and use the designations +3, +2, +1, 0, -1, -2 -3 in what obstetricians (OB/GYNs) call the 1/3 system.

Yes, it is possible. Typically what happens is that once the baby's head gets to station 0 then it doesn't go back to "floating"; however when pushing, the baby tends to go "two steps forwards and one step backward"--allowing the maternal tissues to gradually stretch out naturally. This is what happened to me in my first birth; but my second was very quick--just a few pushes--so there are many variations of "normal" here, as elsewhere in childbirth.

To be honest I was terrified of labors and, I still am a little bit. But I have my wonderful boy and I had my labor naturally without epidural anesthesia, and it takes 17h, but all pains are forgotten, and that was the most amazing day of my life! The first of amazing days filled with love to my child! That is just something natural and if you would be able to fill all the joy and love during labors it wouldn’t be painful at all.

Hi please note station is related to the biparietal diameter in relation to the ischial spine and not the lower most part of the head in relation to the ischial spine as your video shows.
It’s a good effort to demonstrate though 👍👏👏👏

  • @lienjud

It would be more useful if it showed the same with a baby being OP or OT and also the difference it makes when a woman is in different positions. Birth is dynamic not static!

I am struggling to see how baby’s station was +3 and you were only 2.5cm dilated?? +3 is when the head is about to part the labia and almost deliver. The cervix would not allow this kind of descent without being fully dilated.
      Hope it all went okay!

When I was in labor with my first it seems like I remember the nurse saying -1 station but idk this was over 10 years ago. I was at 10cm for several hours or more without any progress. I don't think my baby ever got beyond that station. I ended up having an emergency c section. The doctor didn't know why my baby wouldn't come down which was not reassuring at all. Doctors are supposed to know what's going on and answer questions. Mine didn't. My first experience was so traumatic and disappointing that I opted for repeat c sections after that. The worst part is I endured 17 hours of labor for nothing. Had I known she wasn't going to come out I would have just got a c section before labor started and skip the misery.

I don't buy into the overpopulation idea because of technological advances, but the argument of fitting 6.7 million in an area the size of MA is weak because it's purely impractical. Think of the requirements for food, water, health care, waste disposal, prisons, work space, transportation, recreation, government, etc. If you visit China you will see the damage "only" a billion people can do to a land mass 176x the size of MA.

      0:29 descent
      0:39 flexion
      0:46 internal rotation
      1:38 extension
