The woman has a heckuva lot more guts than I do. I'd stand my ground...but only because a heart-attack would prevent me from moving. That is one BIG bruin...and a truly magnificent creature.

I love bears , just respect them and they wont use your femur as a tooth pick

Those bears just need a hug and afterwards we'd all have tea and politely make small talk.
BTW I went to the Treadwell School of Bear Communications.

@Alaska15Steve I've read that in bear country you should carry bear spray and wear lots of little tinkling bells. I've also read it's important to recognize the difference between black bear and brown bear feces. Black bear scat contains berry seeds and tufts of fur from small mammals. And brown bear scat contains lots of little tinkling bells and smells like pepper spray. Is this true?

Very Cool.!! It's neat to see just how different Shaped these big bears can be.
The one bear who was scared off.....and more typical looking , has a big rounded Hind End. Where as the aggressor bear seemed much larger in the Front and shoulders , with a much longer and massive neck. His whole walk and posture oozes power and dominance. Great video.!!

that's a KING bear if I ever saw one! and he's ADORABLE! what I wouldn't give to be able to run up to him, give him a great big hug and scratch him behind the ears! (and not get killed doing it!)

10 people includng the naturalist who had advised us what to do in advance in the event this happened. Don't move and don't run. Alone, you'd be history. Ask Mr. Treadwell. It was an awesome experience.

All Bears are scary but that Bear is one of those which look like a monster from a movie. Gotta be well over 1,000 lbs.

No it was not on TV. It was just a video that I took while on vacation. I am glad that you enjoyed the video.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I spent three one-day visits to Katmai in a row, and every day was a different amazing adventure. Although the bear coming right up to us was the highlight for sure. I would never have believed it if I had not been there.
    Is your movie on youtube?

  • @Alaska15Steve
    @Alaska15Steve  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@anavidhunter It was totally awesome!! spent three days at Katmai. Flew back and forth from Homer each day on a float plane, and spent hours watching the bears. Nothing can describe how cool it was. The photos and the video and just sitting and watching... amazing.

  • @Alaska15Steve

It potentially could have been one of those events. Glad you enjoyed the video. Almost like being there !!

You are most welcome...awesome footage you captured there and what an incedible few days those must have been.
I'm not sure if I ever put that up on here or not...it was years ago and it would be on an old sony analog cam...it might be...I'll look when I get a chance and let you know.
My footage pales in comparison to yours...but the experience was impressive to say the least.
Yours is on a beautiful grass flat and mine is along the Stewart Cassiar Highway along the Alaskan Panhandle.

Actually Kodiaks and grizzlie (brown bear) are the same genetic breed. The Kodiaks are bigger because they eat a higher percentage of high protein salmon, so they grow larger. So the current thinking is that they are really the same bear.

the grizzly bear is a subspecies of brown bear. So all grizzly bears are brown bears, but not all brown bears are grizzly bears.

@nordhorny -All Brown bears come under the scientific classification URSUS ARCTOS. There are 10 sub-species of which the Kodiak and the Grizzly are two members. The Kodiak is classified URSUS ARCTOS MIDDENDORFFI. The Grizzly is classified URSUS ARCTOS HORRIBILIS. There are both genetic and physical differences....

Did anyone happen to be holding a 12-gauge shot with slugs or a high-powered rifle, just in case? Yes, you guys were in a large group and you weren't moving, but bears are very unpredictable.

I was with a group of about 10 people, and we were armed if necessary, and no one made any aggresive moves toward the bear, and our naturalist was in that area of Katmai many days a week, so although we felt concerned, we felt realitively safe as long a no one panicked and ran.

    brown bear is Ursus arctos
grizzly is Ursus arctos horribilis - subspecies of brown bear
so ... the same family, not exact same animal.

  • @MrSCOTTtheSCOT

If this guys walking about with those battle scars , and the other bears are oh "shit its psycho one eyed wally i'm moving on" , then who the hell was the other bear and what kind of mess is he in . That must have been one hell of a fight in the bear community. looking at him in comparison to the other bear , it looks like he has leaned down , maybe from having to lay low healing and been affected from been hindered by an eye loss. But now hes back out to make up for lost time and looking mean for it. So prior to his fight , how much bigger must this bear have been before going into that fight.

But if they moved slowly backwards, when the bear came towards them. Just like the other bear did. Would that been another way out? The bear just want his area, right?
