I rent a beginner Yamaha YFL 222 and I can get a nice tone out of it but I do find the mechanism to be a little clunky and I think I have to work harder to get the high register to sing. It handles the full standard concert flute range C4 to C7 (plus a few extra on a really good day) but I don't think it has the same finesse or range of dynamics of more expensive models. I really want to move on to an open hole flute (with a B foot) sooner than later because my left hand position is not the greatest and closed hole is letting me cheat way too much. Overall, I do find some comfort by learning on a bit of a stubborn flute that when I eventually get myself a nicer model, it's going to (hopefully) sound even more beautiful.
Hi Bonnie, I totally understand the mechanisms. When we talk about tone on beginner flutes it doesn't take into consideration the finely made mechanisms on the upper level flutes. That does make a difference. But if you work at doing everything possible to get a good tone when you finally get the flute of your dreams all the work will pay off and you will think it heavenly!
