That match didn't let us to see Papin and Cantona, in USA 94; however, we saw the great Bulgaria with Stoichkov, Kostadinov, Balakov, Letchkov, Ivanov, and Mikhailov. It was meant to be!

Stoichkov did an jubilee match for its own 50th birthday, where he paid tribute to his fallen friends Trifon Ivanov, and to the legendary Johan Cruyff - who also passed away in 2016, two months before the match. On one hand it was heartbreaking for France, but on the other - Bulgaria was really strong back than, which they proved during the final tournament. It was a bit like England who was stunned by Poland in WC 1974 qualification, but then Poland went on to become 3rd. So not only this result enabled Bulgaria to get their best World Cup result ever, but also maybe created perfect circumstances for France to rebuild their team and prepare to the 1998 World Cup in the best way possible.

Both beating the strong team in the crucial game of qualification (France/England), both reaching the semifinals, both losing the starting match 0-3 (Nigeria/Spain)... Bulgaria was very powerful with fantastic players and the beautiful skills! My congratulations to brotherly country from Russia!
Kostadinov delivered under a huge pressure. Last seconds of the game. He had very little time (if you look closely you can see that Blanc came very close to stop or deflect his shot with a desperate tackle) and very little space, but still he managed to score under the cross bar with an incredibly beautiful shot, taken from a difficult angle. Bulgaria proved the following year to fully deserve to be at the World Cup.

When you put your qualification at stake against Bulgaria, for the last match, you are in big trouble. The mistake was not to lose to this Bulgarian team, that was very good, but against Israël before. This is one of the most traumatic event in french football with France - Germany 1982. Nothing much to say here. Kostadynov was brilliant that day and Bulgaria deserved the qualification.

Bulgaria qualified and made it to the World Cup semifinals, by far the greatest performance for the Bulgarian football. But after that, Bulgaria qualified only once again to the World Cup and twice to Euro. France on the other hand, won twice the World Cup(1998 & 2018), played another final in 2006, won Euro in 2000, and played another Euro final in 2016, not to mention they never missed again a final tournament.

I remember this game like it was yesterday.As a bulgarian,I can tell you we lost hope by the end and all in the sudden ........France out from the World Cup!What a team France was back then!?Some of the best players in the world!But I think we did them a big favor.4 years later they won the World Cup and dominated the world of football till now!After that shocker,France won two times the World Cup,lost one final on penalties (could have been 3 times),one European Cup,and lost one EC final!I think they are so over this game :)

Yes, the French team needs traumatic losses to win afterwards : WC 1982 : traumatic loss against Germany, wins Euro 1984 WC 1993 : traumatic loss against Bulgaria, wins WC 1998, Euro 2000 and reach WC final in 2006 WC 2010 : cataclysmic crisis in the squad, long restructuration and finally reached Euro final in 2016, won WC 2018 and reached WC final in 2022 So thanks Bulgaria for traumatically spanking the French team !
I remember this so well. It's interesting that Bulgaria went on to perform so well in the world cup in the USA. A similar thing happened in 1973, when Poland nipped in to qualify for the 1974 world cup ahead of England....and were very close to reaching the final.
The Bulgarians went on to provide great entertainment at US '94 so we should all be happy about that, even though it was scant consolation for the French.

France had a great team too, they would have eliminated Bulgaria had they not slacked off against Israel the game before. Sweden was also in the same group and they were excellent too, reaching the semifinals in 94, it was the group of death in uefa that time.
As half-bulgarian and 14-15 yo boy at the time, those few years of Bulgarian football peak are written in my mind forever and are one of the most emotional sport related experiences I ever had. Bulgaria played exeptionally well at the world cup and proved it was not a coincident they qualified. And in the end everything came toghether for France too, few years later as they climed to the top. And that is the beauty of sport in a nutshell. The victory tastes so much better, knowing you went through the cruelest defeats and toughest tests before.
France would have made a great World Cup 94. Bulgaria indeed made a great World Cup. This match is part of that World Cup not only statistically. It is part of the history of that championship. Historical moment. Two great teams.

Henri really wasn't around in 98... Guivarch and Duggary were the strikers.. definetely not as good as Papin/ Cantona... in 98 you could have had Zidane/ Papin/ Cantona although Papin was towards the end of his career... in the end very few goals in 98 were scored by forwards in that team.

Cantona and Ginola were kicked out before 1996. Papin could have been useful, after all France didn't have a good striker in 1998. They scored with defenders and midfielders. But had Houllier continued I think France might not have won in 1998.

They actually lost the 3rd place play off 4-0 to Sweden mate but yeah you are right about the rest, Bulgaria had the best team they've ever had at that World Cup. Some people criticise USA 94 for being a poor tournament but I totally disagree. It was one of the best there has been for me, very attack minded teams and the afore mentioned Bulgaria along with Romania and Sweden were fantastic.

When you put your qualification at stake against Bulgaria, for the last match, you are in big trouble. The mistake was not to lose to this Bulgarian team, that was very good, but against Israël before. This is one of the most traumatic event in french football with France - Germany 1982. Nothing much to say here. Kostadynov was brilliant that day and Bulgaria deserved the qualification.

I remember this so well. It's interesting that Bulgaria went on to perform so well in the world cup in the USA. A similar thing happened in 1973, when Poland nipped in to qualify for the 1974 world cup ahead of England....and were very close to reaching the final.

As half-bulgarian and 14-15 yo boy at the time, those few years of Bulgarian football peak are written in my mind forever and are one of the most emotional sport related experiences I ever had. Bulgaria played exeptionally well at the world cup and proved it was not a coincident they qualified. And in the end everything came toghether for France too, few years later as they climed to the top. And that is the beauty of sport in a nutshell. The victory tastes so much better, knowing you went through the cruelest defeats and toughest tests before.
France would have made a great World Cup 94. Bulgaria indeed made a great World Cup. This match is part of that World Cup not only statistically. It is part of the history of that championship. Historical moment. Two great teams.
France made remarkable world cup appearances in 1982 and 1986, even in 1978. Besides, 1994 is a world cup that in my view, is not memorable.

Henri really wasn't around in 98... Guivarch and Duggary were the strikers.. definetely not as good as Papin/ Cantona... in 98 you could have had Zidane/ Papin/ Cantona although Papin was towards the end of his career... in the end very few goals in 98 were scored by forwards in that team.

They actually lost the 3rd place play off 4-0 to Sweden mate but yeah you are right about the rest, Bulgaria had the best team they've ever had at that World Cup. Some people criticise USA 94 for being a poor tournament but I totally disagree. It was one of the best there has been for me, very attack minded teams and the afore mentioned Bulgaria along with Romania and Sweden were fantastic.
