You are a hero, man. I am new to bikes and got a 78xs400 and this saved my bacon!

Thanks for the video, Will. Simple but it's worth seeing someone do it.
FYI I find the music pretty distracting and unnecessary. Good info though.

did you mention what type of filler that is? I have an '80 which I think is the same as yours, but I don't have a manual for it so I'm not sure.

You have to find out whether your bike is SOHC or DOHC; at some point in the 80's they switched over to DOHC and several things changed. A nice place to shop is bikebandit.com (no affiliation to me) where you can add in your make and model and they will list many options for oil filters; often for less than $8. Again, though, the most important thing you can do is find out whether you're SOHC or DOHC. Without a photo of your bike I cannot say for sure.

What oil do you recommend for warmer climates? 20w-50?

Have you ever taken the Sump Screen Out? I am curious what size bolts they are? Also what size bolt is the Oil Filter Cap?

RivRat5 Yes I have taken the screen out. What size as in how long or how wide are they? Most of the engine covers are m6 bolts, but I can't remember off hand. The big oil filter cover takes a 13mm socket. Or are you asking about length there? Yamaha part numbers for bolts include the size as part of the number fyi.

      I appreciate the timely reply,
I was using a miss match of SAE sockets, the tool kit wrenches and what not. I found the Oil Cover to be 12mm. The sump cover I used 5/16 (the yamaha 8mm wrench seemed loose, I didn't have a socket). And the only metric socket i have is a 17mm which fit the oil drain plug that I started to mangle using an SAE wrench
Hope that can help someone else. XS360

RivRat5 The bolts are all metric for sure, but a lot of times they get mangled over the years from people over tightening them. If you're at the point where you need to reduce the size or use SAE it is time to replace all the hardware. There are nice kits online in stainless or chrome for short money (ebay).

It should be 14mm in diameter with a 1.5 thread pitch. OEM# 92800-14000.

chiangxiong what shifter lever was that? MSR? good video

Yes, I believe it is an MSR. I picked it up at a local shop just by eyeballing it. I brought the old lever in to match the splines. It folds up too and is super light, but it will rip your boots apart! The crosshatched grooves are quite sharp. I ended up taping it up because of that.
