Am 71 yrs - I watch Girl Happy over and over - she and Elvis act so lovely together, will never get tired of seeing them! Lovely, Shelly, how you still carry Elvis in your heart and mind! He was surely OUT OF THIS WORLD! A man BLESSED by GOD in and outside! Thanks so much Shelly.
What a nice person she is, speaking from the heart with loving care. The story of Elvis entering the room and what she felt about his charisma is great stuff.
Shelly is an adorable person and speaker here. She really talks about Elvis and his charisma with such awe and respect. What she says about how Elvis didn't have a chance to survive Hollywood and his career (in Vegas and touring) is so true. It must have been an awful existence for him, and lonely. Thank you Shelley!
You are a real classy lady, Shelley. I do believe that Elvis was the handsomest man to ever walk the face of the earth as well as the most talented with the way he could sing, dance, and act. I think his acting was absolutely great and none of the criticism that was leveled at him is valid. Just a bunch of wanna bes who were jealous of his tremendous charisma and appeal that he owned and no one else could come close to possessing.
Great to hear stories like this. Classy lady, and I fully believe her when she says that he felt comfortable just being friends with her. The pressure of simply being "Elvis" with all that came with it, must have been a heavy burden. I`m sure that Elvis deep down was just a regular guy who happened to have this tremendous talent that touched so incredible many people. Larry King said that he had never met anyone who KNEW Elvis, who had one bad word to say about him.
I dated someone who wasn’t an Elvis fan but went to a concert one night with this friends. He spoke about Elvis the way she did, the atmosphere changed when he walked out onto the stage. He said to me, “Elvis only walked out on stage and I was flawed. My jaw dropped and I hoped nobody was looking at me. Then I noticed just about everyone in the concert halls jaw had dropped too.” That’s what he said, then he became a fan.
Just because she refused to sleep with him doesn't mean she didn't like him I have never heard Ms. Fabares say a bad word about him or anybody for that matter she has always seemed like a lovely individual.
For those that can't understand the pressure that Elvis Presley carried throughout his public life, the last 2 minutes of this clip would suffice to make them do so . I'd not heard this particular story and the reason is simple. Of the hundreds of people who were there, as subjects and witnesses, only Shelley Fabares saw it happened, and she was the only one who didn't have to stand up (LOL) The story starts at 7.49 into the clip. Unreal...
Hey Javelin...this woman is incredible! She played in one of TV most popular 50's sitcom, she recorded a song that will be played on classic rock forever (Johnny Angel), and finally...she starred 3 times with THE KING. What have you done Javelin?
Shelley, incredibly has related what was mentioned so frequently on other posts I’ve viewed about how when Elvis entered or was in a room you could feel his presence. I truly believe that happened always when he was around. His personality, his charisma was so strong it filled a room. I find this to be almost spiritual. Maybe it is. He was a very spiritual person and I also believe he was a gift from God.. ...and also I want to reiterate what another person mentioned. Who could not like this beautiful lady? I remember as a kid growing up in the fifties and sixties always loving her very gentle personality. And also a hottie.. 😊
Shelly is such a brilliant woman....... And it's with such great insight when she talked about how Elvis almost wasn't meant to survive the notoriety and stardom. All we see about Elvis is how he abused the drugs and how his physical appearance changed for the poorer....... But Shelly really nailed it: Elvis really died as a consequence of the way he was treated by the people who managed him and his fans....... It was almost too much for anybody to take and yet survive.
Boy! Do I have to agree with what you said about his survival & how it makes your respect (and my love) for him) quadruple at the very least. It's NO WONDER why his Mother hated it all when boys began their petty jealousy of him & girls ripped his clothes off him to get a piece of him. He was obviously a Dear, Sweet Man who everyone Adored the minute they saw him whether they were fans in the beginning or not. RIP Elvis...I missed my chance to see you & have to dream of that feeling! I LOVE YOU!
Great lady always in control and a real vetrean in those elvis.. It seemed to centre around her and him and evsryone else was just there except Bill Bixby in Clambake
Shelley said that somebody said that she appeared more times with Elvis than any other Actress. But yes as a leading lady not more than anyome else that goes to Actress Terri Garr appeared as a dancer in his movies 7 times.
Shelley is adorable - the funny thing is when she starts talking about Girl Happy, she said she played "Cynthia Fox" and she says something in effect "Some roles you never forget, Cynthia Fox"....but in Girl Happy she played a gal named "Valerie". In another Elvis movie (Spinout), she played Cynthia Foxhugh. .
Very hot for Shelley and for that matter Donna. The character Cynthia Fox was in her second movie with Elvis (as a race car driver). What's interesting about this 1967 flick was that her film father was played by Carl Betz (her dad on Donna Reed).
Shelley Fabares made guest appearances on the Donna Reed Show during the 6th and 7th seasons, but during the 8th season she didn't appear at all. I have always wished I could see reruns from years 6 and 7. (I did see one on MeTV last year, her first guest shot.)
I Love Shelley Fabares & Always Will But Her Character Name In 'Girl Happy' Was Valerie Frank (See 2:30). I Think Cynthia Fox Was Her Character Name In 'Spin Out'. Thank You.
Shelley had a liver transplant a few years ago and is on heavy duty meds for the rest of her life. That can contribute to not remembering some facts about Girl Happy, like the fact she played Valerie Frank, not Cynthia Fox. Let's be gracious and forgive her. A wonderful talented lady who truly loved Elvis in a non-romantic way.
Non romantic my ass. You aren't the 'leading lady' in an Elvis movie without spending some time on your back in his trailer. That's the way it was back then. Still is to some extent.
if Elvis eloped with Shelly in 1964 then both lives would be more interesting. Shelly has a good sense of humor, vibrant and sympathetic on Elvis. When was the last she met him? 1967.
The fella she really liked was James Darren from the 'gidget movies'. She made a mistake twice there when she said Jimmy Stewart. She dedicated 'johnny Angel' to James Darren. I think she pushes it a little too much about the beatles there. Ok, it was their time but, a little over kill there by Shelley. Bless her heart, she's lucky she's alive, she went through a few accidents there that almost cost her her life. Think she had some desease too. Bless her heart.
Shelley Fabares is an articulate and charming actress and interview subject; I also don't understand why an attractive older woman decided to change her hair so radically from the style that she wore during her years on "Coach" to the multi-colored pink accented style. Her affection for Elvis is genuine and accentuates the damage that his manager Col. Parker did to his career; he was a talented singer/actor who could have done better material rather than the formulaic musicals during the 60s.
To each his own. At her age she’s earned the right to look any way she wants to. I applaud her for being daring and not wearing a typical helmet hair style
I always liked Shelley. Great lady. Great actress too. If she did really reject Elvis romantically, I get it. He was a great person, great friend too but look at his track record with girlfriends. I'd rather be friends with him than be his girlfriend if given the choice.
