    The Knack was amazingly talented. Unfortunately, even with their great songs and performances, the critics turned against them because they refused many interviews which ticked a lot of people off. A lot of unfair criticism and lies about how overrated they were.... which was the furthest thing from the truth. They were all truly talented musicians that got an unfair shake that eroded a very promising future. Get The Knack was their 1st album and was of the best in modern rock history. And if you consider that they used virtually no tracks.... a single recording with usually one take, recorded in less than 2 weeks and under $18,000. Simply amazing and every song on that album was hit worthy.

      They were badly managed I believe.Such a shame about refusing to do interviews because that does put them in a bad light.Getting The Knack dvd is worth watching but now hard to get.Bruce Gary comes across as a down to earth kind of person,very fit aswell which is why it was so sad what happened to him later becoming very sick before he died.

      @@imogenimeson664 They talked about in interviews about bad management decisions. They had a chance to perform live on the Grammys but their management had them doing shows overseas because those shows paid and the Grammys didn't. They said it was one of their biggest mistakes.

      It’s musically great, but not very good lyrically

    The Knack are one of the great unappreciated bands of all-time. It's a shame they never lived up to their full potential.

      They lived up to all their potential. They didn't kiss backside. One of the best bands I've seen live, and I've seen many.

    Summer 1979. I was glued to the radio, head phones on. And along came the Knack. Incredible summer, incredible songs. It was unreal. To this day, these guys are the shit. Other bands couldn’t carry their laundry these days. Pure pop and rock heaven.

    Everyone (rightly) cites the solo in My Sharona, but this one is utterly perfect for the song.

    I had this record when it was reeased and i started drumming..Bruce Garys Style had a huge influence on me. I´m stunned how accurately they play it note by note.And Berton Averre is incredible!!!

      zebonaut // Amen brother. Bruce Gary of The Knack and Stewart Copeland of The Police were my two biggest drumming influences. Two very different and unique styles. I used to love covering their stuff back in high school when I drummed in a band. RIP Bruce and Doug.

    I miss you Doug. I saw you during ur first tour and saw you at the old Boston Garden. My first show was 3 Dog Night in 1973. Then Lynyrd Skynyrd pre- plane crash in 1976. Next was the Ramones in 76. You fronting the Knack was better than front row Clash. I've seen a thousand plus shows, followed the Grateful Dead 1980 to 1983. You Guys Had "It"! Love you Doug! Jeff

    Doug, thanks so much for posting this! i've watched this a whole bunch of times and it always blows me away how absolutely note-perfect the performance is. the recordings on Get The Knack are as true to the band's sound as anyone's ever accomplished.
    from 7th grade on i played this cassette front to back to front until the tape broke, and i taped it back together multiple times, bought the cassette again and again, and the LP, downloaded it...40 years later this record stands as one of the best pop rock records of all time, as well as one of the best debut albums ever. lightning in a bottle, there will never be anything like it.
    thanks so much for the music! it had a huge impact on me and pushed me toward writing and playing, some of the best years and the most satisfying pursuit of my life. wish all you guys the best.

    This and at least 2 other songs from the album (Lucinda, Oh Tara) could have been mega-hits had the band been managed properly.

      She's So Selfish was great, got a lot of radio play but may have been too "controversial" for the time. Agree on your two picks. Add in Good Girls Don't and That's What the Little Girls Do.

    I was a fan the moment i heard the intro to my Sharona this band had the making of a long iconic career but unfortunately. The song writing got some what stale and new wave sound as a hole was being over taken by grunge . But being a drummer back in the new wave days it's my favorite music. Basically if ur not aware it's punk polished and commercialized..

  • @KaBoomChannel
    @KaBoomChannel 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The Knack is what would have happened to the Beatles if the only good songs they ever wrote was "I want to hold your hand" and "She loves you" and that's it. A DJ said that once and it is so goddamn true. You cannot have a band like this with this kind of hype without having a continual stream of great songs, it just will sink otherwise. They were great musicians the Knack, but they just didn't master songwriting.

    • @MrSpencerMcIntosh
      @MrSpencerMcIntosh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right, if you listen to their second album it is obviously not as good as their first. Their first is up there with some of the best material for that time, yet that is the problem so many have made, to follow through and change with the times rather than use one trick over and over. David Bowie did that well, so did the Stones. New York Dolls made the same mistake.
