  • From the 1980s, a documentary detailing the growth of modern London. This episode showed how the expansion of the Underground pushed the growth of London out in to new pastures, when places like Golders Green and Arnos Grove were in the countryside! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

    It's a good job that the 30 mph limit came into force in 1935 can you imagine what would have happened if there had been no speed limit,chaotic to say the least.

      London was a much smaller place when the first tubes started. It was their extension into the countryside that was the catalyst to expanding London, the railway companies wanted house building to give them their passengers.....

    This is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen, and I’ve seen quite a number. Have watched this one four times and quite honestly I reckon I could watch it over and over again without tiring of it! Before my first viewing I knew nothing of the history of London’s transport before its big sweep revolution of 1933 and in fact I think I discovered this documentary when by chance putting out a question as to the old General Company which I had heard of by name and by name only from old photos but never by any reading info’ ie I became curious because I couldn’t quite grasp why the dearth of interest in the “private interest” of London’s transport ie it was as tho’ anything and everything previous to 1933 had been [ rather like George’s references in 1984 to the elimination of previous news items...] clamped out of existence by the new Corporate Entity called London Transport which granted was as it were like “the answer to a maiden’ s prayer” did also seem a bit like the Soviet Bolshevik Revolution ie the re-writing of history ie everything before just like the Stone Age! Don’t get me wrong! “Ain’t complainin’!” as might be said, just that it seemed a weeny bit unfair towards efforts previous to 1933...after all as the saying goes “Rome wasn’t built in a day!” ie even great inventors of the present generally have a decent sense of humility to admit their knowledge owes something to previous efforts....[ I mean, who taught them, they had to go school too, didn’t they, or as our dear Mothers might/would say “Full of big ideas and large ‘I am-s’ but who taught them to blow their noses AND into a handkerchief too!” Or maybe I’m wrong and old-fashioned in outlook, and the “new greats [ not to say ‘ grates ‘ ...] don’t care and just say [ not unlike the Bolshies...] that what happened before was rubbish run by selfish Maifiosi crooks selling stale peanut butter to the saintly populace.....ie purely on the profit motive.... Well, maybe I am wrong....after all, they did it to make money and set out to make money be earning it ie by “sewing something to reap something” and not being funded by public funds they had to be ruthless to be realistic but ruthless maybe not against the customer but against competition....But I digress....Just to say that everyone concerned in the making and presentation of this documentary can be mighty proud of their superb achievement....and with renewed thanks....and wishes for Good Continuation!

    Kind of you to post this. The Making of Modern London series was superb and a great pity it wasn't made available to buy in a commercial format. The books on the series are a good supplement. Apart from the high quality of the content and archive film, the fine narration of Gavin Weightman was a delight to listen to, and also the splendidly appropriate musical background supplied by Jim Parker.

      The shortening of tube line names could've been more widespread. When the Victoria line was under construction, there was a suggestion to call it the Viking line - not so much about the British ancestors, but the two names of Victoria and King's Cross. Another suggestion was to call it the Walvic line - Walthamstow to Victoria.
      Also, when the Northern line's two branches formed together, there were various ideas to call it the Edgden (Edgware-Morden) or Edgington (Edgware-Kennington). When the unveiling of King Tutankhamun in Egypt made headline news in the 1920s, a suggestion was put forward for the Tootingcamden line!

    This was a truly GREAT series - made by Thames TV. I have constantly pestered the Thames library inheritors over a long period of time to give it the restoration/DVD release treatment - but it has never happened. I have some wobbly copies (recorded to Betamax, then copied to VHS and finally digitised to MPEG2) but really I would like to get professionally remastered versions. These contained so much - they have great value and interest for history buffs, scholars and students of social history. Such a shame they remain on the shelf - come on Freemantle Media - Buck up!

      Gee God. Utter rubbish. The trans Atlantic slave trade was fought against by the British in the greatest act of altruism in the history of the world. It started in 1807, lasted fifty years and cost the British many billions in today’s money. For which the British received not a penny or any other advantage. The white man (especially the Englishman) created the modern world which has allowed the population of the world to increase seven times over in just 200 years. This means there is an 83 percent chance that idiots like you would not even be alive now if not for white people. And another thing. Stop using the white man’s inventions or discoveries. You know, don’t travel in cars or busses or trains, don’t use electricity. Don’t use our modern sewage systems, and certainly don’t use modern medicines. And bugger off.

      @maxmullen6337 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Philip Croft. Again rubbish. The slave owners were compensated but the fact is the British government made slave owning illegal wherever they had power to impose. It was a decision made by the British State not the slave owners. It’s a bit more complicated than you probably think because India was a problem. India was largely self governing and the Indian hierarchy were happy with slavery, Casteism and widow burning. Widow burning was stopped but it was a struggle and slavery was dealt with later.
