Converting Cast Iron Hub to PVC: Plumbing

- Just a demo. We ended up replacing the entire stack and vent entirely. This is typically how to go from an existing cast hub to pvc. You can drill out the lead pour and pry it out. Then work the fitting loose. Clean it up nicely and silicone in a push tite (donut). Then install your pvc and you’re off.

If it went in that easy, use the wrong size gasket
Handymandy strikes again
They need a Service Weight donut not a standard. FYI you are not supposed to us a street fitting in a donut because you can not get the right friction fitting with the street fitting do to the length of the "pipe" side of the fitting. You do not need any caulk or silicone if done right. Some silicone can breakdown the rubber over time
If you get the right donut for the correct type of cast iron (service, regular, XH-extra heavy, XXH weight), you're working with, you won't have this sloppy(hotdog down hallway) fit, requiring silicone. When you get the right ones, they literally have to be forced into hub with a big hammer, leverage, lube & patience making a really good watertight seal w\out caulk. The weight letters are usually stamped(embossed) on the CI pipe & fittings -90's, TY, wye especially --H, XH, XXH, etc is what youll see. Obviously because the wall thickness of pipe is different depending on weight, the rubber donuts need to be different to match & work correctly!👍🏻👌🏻🛠️🔧📏🤷🏻♂️
Fernco makes a gasket just for this transition from hub to no-hub.
It's a hubbed wye fitting. You cant cut off the hub to use a no-hub, there isn't enough pipe behind it.
If the joints not leaking, why not just put a Fernco on that little piece of pipe?
If you haven’t already tripped, why not just tuck the laces into your shoes instead of tying them? 😂
I wear crocs
@@richh5392 yea you seem like the type 😂
That was not a service weight donut. No silicone would be necessary. It was a heavy weight donut
I was just gonna say. I found the guy who uses silicone and the wrong donut. I don't know how many of these I have removed from handy Andy.
The dual tite you are using is the wrong size- it should be much tighter. they have extra heavy and service weight sizes
Whatever happened to a Furrel Pack With Oakham or lead runner
Omg its xtra heavy. Get the right gasket and a soil adapter and do it right.
Take the sticker label off
Wrong size rubber and silicone 💀
American cowboys 🤠 😅
Not a approved joint using silicone
Usually with older hubs these donuts will be loose so I would do a lead and oakum joint with a pvc manoff sleeve, that is a good skill to learn.
I silicone the hubs with the donuts after cleaning the hub thoroughly. Then the pipe gets supported with brackets and strapping.
The donut did not fit the hub which is why he siliconed it
100% agree. Just don’t pour golden lead on a manoff lol. We all do it once
That’s the right way
Theres two types of donuts, the standard one which is shown in this video, and theres the extra heavy which will 100% work in this situation. No silicone needed
Use the correct seal tight donut and then you don’t need the silicone
All u had to do was cut the bell off that Y with a diamond blade Diablo is a very good blade to use then u just use a no hub clamp looks more professional
Here in Washington state most supply shops have both donut sizes for heavy or normal cast iron fittings. There is a better seal and less wobble when you can find the right donut sizes, not saying this doesn't work you gotta do what you gotta do with what you have at the time.
Just use a Ty-seal. No silicone needed.
Remember to leave the lable on when installing the doughnut.
To clean out a hub I use a copper fitting brush 3/4 break it off put it to the chuck of my drill and clean out the hub. And I usually use the cast iron rubber no hub fernco.
I saw a video.today of a plumber replacing cast iron with pvc. However he used lead to complete the connection. Is that possible or was it just a bs video?
I seen that!
You can it’s called a man off and you pour it like a normal joint it won’t melt through the pvc you can even do it horizontally with a joint runner .
done this - twice, on sewer cleanouts under our house in order to extend them to outside the house wall
You need an SV gasket. That is not the correct gasket. Don't do what this guy does. It will leak.
Lead & oakum and that service weight was the Vietnam days in the world of plumbing lol
Its easier, quicker and cheaper to cut the pipe and use a no hub coupling
Doesn't silicone make the rubber Crack over time?
I just cut off the hub. And use a mission band right on that nub and run pvc. In and out
I have seen some guys use a service waste gasket, and install pvc.
Wrong size donut, please don't use silicone, come on now
Melting the lead would send it into the pipes, is that why it isnt done?
Is it a must to leave the paper on? 😅
Pretty cool tip.
You dont need silicone on a donut. And dont use them outside in sewer applications. They are worthless.
I'm lazy so i use fern coat 😁
It’s called a reducer
Wtf......
No good very bad job
How not to do a transition to pvc, would it kill you to use a running rope and a soil adapter?
push type, then man just slide it right in there lol. no. it should be a tight fit. install the donut first then you use a lot of silicone grease so you can push the pvc in there.
Surefit fitti g, But why , seems like there's plenty of space to add 45 without remove lead?
Gotta get the Led out 🤟🎸 😅
There isnt an emoji that doesnt use the thumb for the horns, give me a break.
Just had to replace the trap under my tub and cleaned everything out that I could get... in my crawlspace... :(
If new construction basement is nubed in do they also vent the pipes for the sink and toilet. Thanks
Couldn’t you melt most of that lead out of there?
At least take the paper off
It was a demonstration.
@@AmitroniX yeah, but there are people out there who will just do as he does.
Putting lead like it's 1965
Why not pour a proper joint?
Because nobody does lead and yokum anymore, we are in 2024.
@@EvansTime I poured a 4-in lead oakum joint yesterday. I pour about 50 joints a year. I mean it's not like in My Father's Day where they would pour 100 lb of lead a day
Because we are not in the Stone Age anymore... Personally, I would have used PC4 cold caulking cord and toss that loosey goosey rubber in the trash.
@charlesgarrity2987 ok boomer nobody cares about you pouring lead. Thats the reason your gunna go outta business
It’s 2024 and there’s a bunch of other less timing ways to do this.
1. Should be lead and oakum
2. If nit, should be a service weight resilient gasket with a short piece of CI
Interesting fact: (no one reads my comment but for those that will)
You can relead caulk that PVC/ABS fitting into that hub.
I've done it, it works.
It’s called a bushing
I would cut out the t. I used too cualk the pipe with lead and oakum 25 years ago. Pvc sucks it gets brittle if its exposed to ultraviolet light it will get thin and brittle. No hub, abs or dwv.
Is that the only downside to it? It's in the basement, there is almost no uv light.
Leaf and oakum a 6” piece of cast iron first is best
I cannot believe how bad these new plumbers of today are, I wouldn't let them plumb a dog🎉house for me
This guy isn’t a plumber he’s a hack
Sometimes it’s easier than others, I prefer to drill out the lead also
