I recently made a Commando build and had little interest in an assault rifle. Then I had an Ex/E/25 drop for me at Eviction Notice and since have gotten two more. An AA/FFR/15 from a vendor and Q/FFR/90 I rolled. I had no idea you could add a perforating mag to them for 40% armor penetration so that was a nice surprise, and especially nice damage bonus for the Quad. I've been duly impressed by all and really like using them. First real test came at Eviction Notice when I ran out of railway spikes toward the end. I switched to the Ex/E/25 and it shredded. I think the perforating mag+Tank Killer really benefits the weapon. Not the most powerful rifle in game but does a great job nonetheless. I like it's character, feel, sound with suppressor, fire rate, and snappy almost instant reload. It feels quick and efficient. I'm keeping the three I have and it fits well right beside my Fixers, Handmades, and Elders Mark.
The Love Tap has a hidden 20% damage bonus. I still hope they extend the system for rerolling named weapons that was intruduced with the Blue Moon update. The Elders's Mark for example keeps its hidden Cursed effect on rerolling, would be nice if you can also reroll Love Tap (with its 20% damaga bonus) and maybe Slug Buster (has hidden -20% AP cost).
Yeah the smg seems to be an underrated gun, I had an anti-armor explosive legendary and it was far better than I expected. Like the LMG I think it really needs an upgrade with more mods introduced. The iron sights are useless but despite vicious recoil and poor accuracy I really think it's a decent gun.

Your video made me go a tinker with one and with a few rolls I actually got a pretty decent alternative to the handmade. I don't know if it's been buffed up over the last two years but you're assessment of the gun is 100% valid. Thanks again and keep up the good work👍☺️
B5025 Elders mark is king, 60 round mag, 60% armour pen, cursed (more damage + ffr). That will output more dps than any fixer. TSE is fun on radium as it quadruples the radiation. Assualt rifles are kinda meh even with a perfect roll tbh
I farm west tek with my bloodied assault. Absolutely love the gun. That reload is the best in the game. Radiums with explosive are great if you run ghoulish. Can easily heal yourself, specially in close quarters with splash damage. I use the combo on a full health character with what rads and shes very hard to kill.
i believe you dont want Quad on a Elder's Mark because it already has huge ammo reserve without it and you run out of AP on VATS before you get to use all the ammo from clip

I run with Perfect Storm as a fun SMG backup, especially now since it seems fire damage got buffed a bit.
Pipe auto rifle is also good, with 25 less ap star, the ap cost drops to 2, the lowest on any commando weapon.

You get higher dmp on quad but higher dps on bloodied. Quad is better for bosses even with elders mark capacity.
