    very difficult to solve the parochial stupidity that resulted in brexit. britain was definitely in a better state pre brexit. and yes, all the problems being experienced in britain are prevalent worldwide but brexit has magnified those within the uk.

      "all the problems being experienced in britain are prevalent worldwide." Actually no. Its the West and especially the neoliberal countries (the opposite of liberal: reward the rich and starve the poor) that have it far worse. The EC does have systems rigidities which slow growth for some, but UK could have helped fix them from the inside.

    The fact remains that 51.9% of the population voted to be poorer, have fewer rights and to hand control over to the British political class. It's hardly surprising there is economic distress, and we can no longer travel so easily in our own continent. It's true that the country is now rule makers, but the ruling classes reserve the right to break those rules with impunity.

      Not true. 51,9% of the voters, not of the population. That included about 1 million Commonwealth citizens that happened to live in the UK at the time, even if just staying for a few months. Against this, the British legal immigrants to the EU and other countries found difficulties to vote even if away for less than 15 years, or were unable to vote after 15 years away, whilst many of the illegal (never registered) ones pretending to be "visitors" all year round, went back to vote against themselves.

    • @WeirdWizardDave
      @WeirdWizardDave 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      51.9% of the people who voted. Not exactly the same thing. Also they were explicitly and repeatedly lied to about what would happen so you can't put all the blame on them.

    Brexit was such a shoot yourself in the foot moment for the UK. The damage done is almost impossible to calculate. The ability to attract legal immigrants surely has taken a hit... employers have had no choice but to relocate a lot of their roles to other areas of the EU. Dublin has won big - due to English being the international business language.

    My friends in England were comfortably middle class, one a professor, several retired. They’re now stressed out beyond measure, the insane hike in mortgage rates, groceries, cut backs. One can barely pay her mortgage, it’s at the expense of groceries and heating. She can’t sell though, because rentals have skyrocketed too. She’s stuck. The retirees fortunately have paid their home off, but groceries and other expenses are hitting them hard. I would venture to guess most Brits would say Brexit and the economy are a disaster.

  • @AB-zl4nh
    @AB-zl4nh 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

    The reason is the First Past The Post voting system. 60% of the population may think Brexit is a failure, but those people are thinly spread across the hundreds of seats. Many are concentrated in urban progressive areas. So even though being anti-Brexit is popular UK-wide, in key seats, Labour needs to win to form a government anti-Brexit that could cost them 30 - 50 seats.

    I voted remain but I don’t find a wholesale return the the EU very enticing. The EU has extracted the trading win in the Brexit deal but in the process this has poisoned the well and put off many Brits from wanting to get tangled up with the EU again. A return would be demeaning and involve a much worse deal than when we left. No one seems to recognise the strategic harm done by the EU to UK relations. Time will tell if that was a big mistake.

  • @oriusnex

    The only thing that can fix the UK is a complete electoral and judicial reform. Proportional representation and proper codified civil law. That should also be the base minimum requirement for letting them back into the EU if that ever becomes a question again.

    • @peterfromgw4615
      @peterfromgw4615 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree with proportional representation as this has worked well in Australia since Federation. “First passed the post” voting really only works when there are two candidates. Any more than two could result with more people voting for the non-winners rather than the winning representative. The UK (and many countries like Australia and New Zealand) use common law in civil matters but there is no really appropriate reason to replace this system with codified civil law. the average english voter hates paying taxes but feels entitled to receive public services
    the average english voter despises continental europeans but feels entitled to receive the benefits they had as EU members.

    Brexit has definitely made things worse, but our decline stems from decades of underinvestment into industry, an overheated property market and 15 years of government austerity. All of our infrastructure has been sold off to foreign countries as have most of our utilities. Living standards are declining and people are upset and feel that they are completely powerless to change anything. The solution to this myriad of problems is a lot more complex than just rejoining the EU (assuming that was even an option). We need a national purpose and targeted industries that we want to be globally competitive in, with government legislation and sustained investment over a period of decades.

    Britain is so badly broken, Labour is going to find it impossible to fix in one parliamentary term. The much-vaunted NHS, which Brits profess to love, is destroyed from 14 years of underfunding because Brits wanted tax cuts more than social welfare. The NHS cannot be saved without tax payers' money but if Labour increases tax, the British people will quickly turn against them, and will vote the Tories back in, lured once again, by tax cuts.

    Brexit was a costly mistake, but it's neither the main cause of the current problems, nor the main concern going forwards.
    The current crisis has it's roots in the austerity policies of Cameron and Osborne which crippled public services while failing to improve the economy, leaving the UK especially vulnerable to Covid-19 and also the inflation caused by the Ukraine War.
    If Starmer can't repair the economy then public services will remain underfunded and living standards will keep falling, regardless of whether the UK is in or out of the EU.

    Re Brexit ;Ask yourself -Why?-& “cui bono?”. And why do U.K. multimillionaires go into politics or MSM? .UK is a wierd society -like a country concealed within another (the U.K.) if you inhabit the former you’re part of the “1%” -wealthy,privately educated e.g Eton then Oxford .It’s the connections you make that you’ll use throughout your life to become wealthy,and thus through UK’s arcane tax system pay less tax proportionately than those below the glass ceiling In U.K… so! EU decides it wants to harmonise certain tax legislation , money flow ,increase transparency in banking system . U.K. elite take fright ,don’t want the financially struggling general public knowing how much they conceal in tax havens .Mobilise “old boys network “ ,those who own the MSM to print anti EU stuff ….and here we are …it’s really that simple and venal Brexit was promoted as “all things to all men” and the English historical mistrust of foreigners.

    You may find it difficult to believe, but more than half of those who voted for Brexit and were over the age of 70 at the time of the referendum in 2016 have already passed away. In other words, they handed over a scorched earth to future generations and departed.
    All of Britain's problems are caused by elderly people who have one foot in the grave but continue to harm the futures of future generations. This is a perfect example of British patriotism.
    I know this is difficult for some to believe, but the average height of five-year-olds in Britain has been declining due to poor nutrition and increased poverty. That is, since the Conservative Party took power in Britain and turned the country into a burned-out wasteland.
    Teachers in Britain have frequently warned that their students are hungry and unmotivated to learn, but the government has ignored their warnings.

    That British guy conveniently forgot to say that much of the money going to the NHS is simply given to private companies, focusing on profit and not service. The Tories have accelerated the sale of the NHS, when social services should have stayed nationalised. The social gap in the UK,or better said England is dismaying and many people have no opportunities. Anybody depending on a payslip to survive, home owner or not, shouldn't vote Tory. Labour basic reason of existence is fighting for the rights of the many, whilst the Tories only focus on the very rich few. Look at Sunak's personal wealth, betting against the UK and making money disappear in tax heavens during the previous crises, now using his position to further increase his and his family's wealth whilst so many working people are destitute. That's the Tory spirit.

    Can I just comment on the NHS ? ‘U.K. has an increasingly ageing poulation who are polymorbidic and have poly pharmaceutical needs . … Social services and health service funding streams are differently sourced .NHS is centrally sourced -so U.K. govt gives £XBillion to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿NHS and what Scottish ,Welsh,and N.I health services get is a per capita ratio of the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿NHS budget . However Social Services are funded by local authorities …who are part funded by central govt .14 years of Successive cuts to LA funding has had consequences down the line the result being “bed blocking”, The Tories say “we’re spending more on the NHS than ever before! “…well what they DONT say is “Over 14 years We have increased the NHS Budget juuuust above the rate of inflation “. However hospital equipment has a life span of ± 10 years before it has to be replaced ,medicines and treatments cost more as well .The last real big investment in the NHS was during the last Labour govt. However…Gordon Brown Chancellor the Exchequer didn’t want the Labour govt to be accused of being spendthrift somcapital projects like schools and hospitals were Privately Financed .The finance companies were encouraged with a high capital returns on the PFI loan . Hospitals have been saddled with paying off the debt since it started . Interesting fact -average length of a PFI contract =36 years average expected useful life of a PFI built school/hospital ….36 Years!!
