      the MV is based on Hermann Hesse’s novel “Demian,”. The German text you read was part of the book

    • @eupetrosarktou7866
      @eupetrosarktou7866 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      No, the German text isn't from "Demian". The quote above the mirror is from Nietzsche's "Also Sprach Zarathustra". The concept of the whole MV is derived from "Demian" (and other works of art), but the German text is not to be found in that book.
      However, the English text RM reads at the beginning of the interlude ("He, too, was a tempter ...") comes from an English translation of "Demian".
      ###

  • @ericweinman9447
    @ericweinman9447 4 ปีที่แล้ว +504

    The German quote was Nietzsche. The organ music in the interlude was Pistorius. The opening painting was "Fall of the Rebel Angels" by Peter Bruegel the Elder. The painting behind the boys in the second scene is 'The Lament for Icarus' by Herbert James Draper . You saw an acted scene in the video wherein member Jungkook is suspended midair like a freeze frame of falling back toward earth with feathers floating in the air. This dramatization was Icarus his feathers molting as he fell. You also see a version of the "Pieta" by Michelangelo, but not an exact replica. Note how this scene of Mary with crucified Jesus is exploded after member Jin kisses the statue now bearing the wings of a fallen angel. Not sure. but I believe the opening organ music might be J. S. Bach.
    BTS's unique popularity rests not just in showmanship but meaning and messaging. This work has strong relationship to Hermann Hesse's book "Demian" as do a number of their works during this period. BTS is a rabbit hole which some males are fearful of entering due to perceived lack of machismo. But, for those with courage to explore, they will find there are times BTS can be as hard as anyone in Western music, particularly their straight rap performances. Listeners literally will get music in many genres and often in blended genres.
    BTS is the largest group in the world, playing Wembley Stadium last year to 2 sold out shows. BTS has more fans than any other group which earns them both love and hate unlike any other group. But I truly believe those who dig in will find something so different and special, that they will be rewarded for their efforts in ways most other groups cannot provide. Good luck with your journey.

      It's true, BTS puts so much meaning and symbolism into their music and their videos, like Philosophy, Psychology (Carl Jung...), Literature, they reference mythology, classical music and other arts - it's such an experience to immerse oneself into their "world" (or the neverending rabbit hole, as it is known) 💜

    • @eupetrosarktou7866
      @eupetrosarktou7866 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Pistorius is a character in "Demian", who plays the organ for Sinclair, who is the protagonist of the novel. The organ piece is actually by the composer Buxtehude, and it is named in the novel.

    This type of look for this mv is for a purpose, there’s a message BTS try to show in each of their me so they will have different looks and concept.This me is about temptation and losing innocence so that explains the look for this mv. Try watching DNA(pop/bright), FAKE LOVE(dark/mystical), MIC DROP(hip hop style), BLACK SWAN/ON(there recents one), BOY WITH LOVE( similar to America. pop). They are have wide range of concept and genre they use for their music. Most of the boys produced their own songs and help with the music making process. Try some of their MVs, then some introductions to bts( there’s many u will find), and then some of off stage or live performance. U WILL SEE WHY THERE THIS POPULAR, THERE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER GROUP/BOY BAND

    this music video definitely had an androgynous look, but there looks vary throughout their music videos especially their more hip-hop based ones in comparison to their more popish songs but some of the members definitely have more "feminine" features and have an androgynous look in real life in comparison to other members who don't and the interlude part in the song is connected to their BU (which is basically a bts universe, it is a whole bunch of music videos, clips, and songs that are connected and create a story line but its very confusing so that a story for another day lol)

    1) It (based on what I've read for other comments of different reactions) is part of the larger BU (BTS Universe) which is a whole thing to get into.
    2) As a standalone, it is based on the book Demain(?) by Herman Hesse, which is about losing innocence and temptation.

  • @xoxojongho

    as people have probably told you, this is deep into the BU (Bangtan Universe) which is their storyline. It's been going on since 2015 and the company (BigHit) created the whole thing and planned it out before they debuted in 2013. There's always hints and little easter eggs in all their MV's and most of their MV's are connected and tell stories. It's very interesting. it's very hard to grasp what is going on if you haven't seen any other previous parts of the storyline, but it was also hard to grasp what was going on when you did watch the full storyline LOL. loved your reaction! With bts you don't get superficial stuff. There are obviously songs for purely fun, however this is not one of those songs haha. Anyways they write and produce their own stuff which to me let's me respect them as real artists.
    Also they are very big on using their influence for good. Makeup is normal in every tv industry lol. Even news anchor men get their makeup done. Maybe not to this extent but still, not a new thing.
    Lastly bts have so much good music just tell me what your style is and I'd be more than happy to recommend some songs. I've been a fan since 2014 so if you have any questions sont be afraid to ask.
    Also production value wasn't always huge for bts. They came from a small almost bankrupt company! Which is different to blackpink. 💜

    BTS has an inner cinematic storyline. And this video ties in to that. There are many layers to enjoying BTS. The visuals, the sound, the choreography but then you get into the lyrics and see how deep those are, and you realize you need to study art, literature, psychology, and philosophy to truly absorb their artistry. BTS lead you down the rabbit hole because they make you LEARN. Neat fact! They based their newest 2 albums (Map of the Soul: Persona and Map of the Soul: 7) after a book called Map of the Soul about Carl Jung's psychology by Murray Stein who in turn wrote a NEW version of Map of the Soul:7 BTS which explores how BTS used Jungian psychology in their last series. You know you're in this Bangtan sh*t for life when you know all the artistic reference in their every MVs. It requires some intellectual properties to accept BTS as BTS on the first view. Many are overwhelmed by them just for the performances and beauties, but some who appreciate BTS for their deeper aspects, presumably will stay here with us for life... Congrats, brothers. Welcome to the family.

    So since many people gave u a kind of intro about the band i will explain about the music video. This mv is a part of their album wings based on the book DEMIAN by HERMANN HESSE. its has a theme of losing innocence and falling into tempation. The painting the first guy was looking at in the beginning is called "the fall of the rebel angels" by Bruegel. It depicts the war between the fallens ( temptations and evil) and humans. The book is about a character sinclair and him fighting with his tempations. Spoiler😊 in the end he embraces them( the kiss is a scene in the book).suga was playing what demian played in the book for sinclair which is buxtehude's passacaglia
    There is so much green and pink. the green is absinthe .U can see the absinthe-imbibed suger lump on fire before RM drinks the green drink. It is a hallucinogenic drink. It simbolizes creativity and liberation as well as madness and despair.
    the text written above the mirror where jins face is cracking it says "Man muss noch chaos in sich haben um einen tenzenden stern gebaren zu konnen" quote from nietzche meaning " you must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star". So about the face crackin in the book damien says" the bird fights its way out of the EGG the egg is the world. WHO WOULD BE BORN MUST FIRST DESTROY A WORLD. The bird flies to the god. That gods name is abraxas." So in carl jungs 1916 book seven sermons to the dead " that which is spoken by God the sun is life and the devil is death. Abraxus speaketh that hallowed and accursed word which is life and death at the same time. Abraxas begetteth truth and lying, good and evil, light and darkness in the same word and in z same act." There is so much symbolism, historical, mythical, psychological, and litrary reference so its hard to explain everything but generally its about embrace the dark and the light part of your self to truly and wholly accept your self thus accepting and loving yourself for who u are. Sorry for rumbling. 💜 edit: the tine that played at beginning is Mass in B-minor ( germem: h-Moll-Messe), BWV 232, extended setting of the mass ordinary by Johann sebastian Bach.

    I rather watch 7 beautiful androgynous boys with perfect skin & beautiful voices singing & dancing than 7 muscular bearded men doing the same with gruffy "masculine" voices. Not body shaming anyone, just stating my preference Lol. Based on how popular BTS is among women of all ages, toxic masculinity (or that macho thing you talking about) is sure as hell, dead. Btw Park Jimin (main dancer, lead vocalist) wrote the melody for this Song. He is crowned by Korean media as the King of Kpop. He is Most popular Idol 2 years in a row & has topped the individual idol Brand Reputation index continuously since beginning of 2019. Akso voted Best Dancer & Most Versatile Idol. Sorry for talking so much about Jimin. He is my bias. All the boys are really super talented. I love them all.

      If Jimin is your bias, you should know that he didn't compose this song. Any part of it. I do not know why Jin mentioned him as the creator of melody, but that was a mistake. The writers of this song are:
      Kim Do Hoon, J-Hope, P Dogg, RM, Bang Si Hyuk, Suga.

    The Korean aesthetic for KPOP IDOLS and even actors and models is different than western standards. Extremely Handsome men are "pretty" and their features meet an aesthetic standard (E.g. small face, full lips, white skin, angular jaw line, nose, double eyelids, etc.) They also take care of their skin and maintain strict skin care routines and treatments to give them that flawless, dewy look. It is always interesting to hear Westerners react to how beautiful they are, as if it's a flaw. I know you guys didn't do that, but you did spend a significant part of your reaction commenting on how they looked. KPOP group members have their designated roles as main rapper, main dancer, main vocal, center and main "Visual". Guess which BTS Member was selected as their Main Visual from watching Blood Sweat and Tears? As BTSARMY, I did appreciate your honest perspective from a Northern European cultural angle and enjoyed your reaction to this video as your first boyband reaction. This video was a pivotal turning point for BTS, sending BTS into a whole other global reach category outside of KPOP. Yes, they are Korean, but their music transcends the boundaries of the KPOP genre and can simply be described as "BTS", because their sound, look and production is unique unto themselves. Their music is a fusion of styles, but its their lyrics that set them apart. To fully appreciate Blood Sweat and Tears, watch the Explained Video and the tie in with Herman Hesses' Demian, and the symbolism of the famous art pieces throughout. I thought about what I would recommend to you next - I think I would recommend Save Me. This video is polar opposite to Blood Sweat & Tears, with no special effects and filmed in one shot. I think you will see just how versatile, incredibly talented and charismatic these 7 are. BTS AKA Bangtan Sonyeondon are Kim Namjoon (RM), Kim Seokjin (Jin), Min Yoongi (SUGA), Jeon Hoseok (JHOPE/HOBI), Park Jimin (JIMIN), Kim Taehyung (V) and our Golden Maknae (Youngest who is good at everything), Jeon Jungkook (Jungkook, JK, Kookie). I am looking forward to your journey down the BTS rabbit hole💜

    BTS started as a 7 member hip-hop group in SK in 2013. They debuted as a Kpop idol group that year. They have grown beyond that label to where now the 'genre is BTS'. BTS makes powerful music videos - (many are actual 6 minute movies) There are more than 70 official MVs and literally hundreds of unofficial ones. BTS has released 7 full length studio albums, each one better than the last... 6 EPs, 11 compilation albums, and too many individual singles to keep track of. All 7 members have solo projects. And they write and produce a lot (maybe most) of their own work. They've made a 4 season - (so far) 8 episodes each - travel series called Bon Voyage. They've made a few "growing up" series that document their journey to becoming the artists they are. They have an ongoing variety show called 'Run BTS' that's a lot of fun... And they communicate with their (literally millions) of fans with a VLive vlog from Korea on a regular basis. They've done 4 World Tours, the last one a stadium tour.... and they are amazing in live concerts. There are long concert clips on YT and FB. And they've made documentaries about the concert tours that touch on how they felt and what went on during the tours. They've done too many concerts, fan meetings, showcases and award shows to count... (see wikipedia BTS Tours). In a recent interview JHope said 'becoming a fan of BTS is the best decision'... when asked what they like to do on their days off... everyone of them has said "sleep." Oh, there's so much more but well... if you stick around you'll see and I hope you do like the music enough to keep following them... you won't be bored.

    This video has a lot of references to Demian by Hermann Hesse, the entire theme is about giving into temptation and discovering the chaos in yourself. It is like you need to embrace the good and bad about yourself and the world to have a better understanding and to grow. Their videos and concepts of every album are portrayed in a unique and interesting way. That includes everything from lyrics to music videos and also the styles of clothing they choose. If you have interests in will written lyrics and a wide variety of music you will definitely enjoy BTS. If you are more into hip hop, check out Mic Drop, the Cypher series, Outro: Tear, any of the rappers mixtapes, and their sound cloud. For pop: Airplane pt 2, DNA, Boy with Love, Fake Love, ON, I need you. For less poppy music there's Mikrokosmos, Spring Day, Autumn Leaves, House of Cards, Jamis Vu, Make it Right, etc. If you are interested in choreography, check out live performances especially for Fire, Dionysis, N.O., DNA. These are only a few because there are way to many to list.

    I'm so happy you started with this song because this was the first of their songs that I absolutely fell I love with when I discovered them around 2016. I lost count of how many times I replayed the video. So basically, it feels as if you and I had the same introduction to BTS music 😁 I also thought this video had a very baroque influence, and you're the first TH-cam reactors that I've seen comment on that 🥳
    I also love that you caught that phrase that you went back to read. The band used a lot of references to Hermann Hesse's German novel "Demian" in the album that this song is from. The album is about coming of age, loss of innocence, and identity, and each band member has a solo song on the album that explores those themes. The songs had sort of teasers/trailers/mini-films that included quotes from the novel.
    One of the most important things to know about this band is that each album or series of albums tells a story. The latest series was heavily and blatantly inspired by Jungian theories of the self. The first album had a song called "Persona" that talked about how their different stage identities and personal identities have led to confusion about who they actually are. The next album has songs called "Shadow" and "Ego" that further this discussion and ultimately tell the story of accepting all sides of one's identity.
    With BTS, the songs and videos are always deeper than they appear, so I highly recommend watching explanation videos by the channel DKDKTV to dive into Korean cultural and historical references into he songs and things that were lost in translation in the lyrics.
    BTS really differs from other kpop groups because there is so much substance behind the awesome beats and visuals, and they really believe in using their platform for positivity. They made one of their choruses a repetition of the phrase "I love myself," knowing full well that their fans would sing along with them. It is truly beautiful to watch a stadium full of people screaming that they love themselves. This is probably information overload for you, but I wanted to try giving some insight into why the fandom ARMY is as devoted as it is. I hope you keep reacting to them because there truly is so much to dig into. Have a nice day!

    this music video is a really good example of the way they often layer symbolism in their works. it's part of a larger storyline, loosely inspired by the novel demian, and everything from the lyrics to the artworks in the background to the symbolism of the flowers has a meaning, and the more you watch it the more you notice! the attention to detail is really insane.

    BTS has many concepts when it comes to their MVs and music production. This MV is just ONE of many.
    Today is their 7th Year Anniversary since debut on June 13, 2013. 💜 BTS are amazing storytellers and more. I'm not sure where to begin, but just know that they are the TOTAL PERFORMANCE PACKAGE, which is barely scratching the surface of who they are as Artists. 😭💜

    They’re huge on production and story telling, they love breaking out of the topical boy band, also most of their music is self produced which we really love as it’s more authentic.
    This video was inspired, as you’ve pointed out by a lot of artwork such as Pietà' by Michelangelo, The Fall of the Rebel Angels' by Peter Bruegel they also had the “fall of Icarus” landscapes
    Plus that this video and their whole album “Wings” was inspired by the book Demian by Herman Hesse.
    They also used biblical references, basically this song is about temptation and losing your innocence, giving in to the devil.
    I feel like you’d also love their song “boy with luv” or DNA, they’re very colorful and happy songs but also their “black swan” video that is visually and audibly a masterpiece.
    Hopefully you’ll listen to more, they have an unmatched and really versatile discography, it’s really good

    When he said he hopes they don't switch there hair color around, when I say I died laughing I meant it lmao
    this is literally one of the first mistakes new fans do, they try to keep track of who's who by hair color, NEVER do that their hair color changes faster than the weather lol.
