Making and Using a Cheap Chainsaw Mill

  • Build and initial test of a very simple and low-cost chainsaw mill. Constructed from offcuts and scraps, it show potential for use with small saws and logs. Roughly made as it is only a proof of concept, but I will looking to improve it and finally make a more precise version when the flaws have been ironed out. Saw is a 34cc, running an 18" bar and standard chain.

    This is the most user friendly version of a homemade Alaskan mill I have seen. I definitely see there is much potential with this system you created, I like the metal track guides, instead of wood.
    Thanks for sharing your work!

      phillieb30 Thank you for the kind words. It certainly has room for some comfort features and refinements. I have found it is very handy for doing the initial cut to gain a flat face to reference a traditional style Alaskan mill to.

    Your build is great, buddy! Drip some water on that blade, looks like it gets hot.
    Plus, it will cut faster since your not using a ripping blade. Also, if you get it hot on a regular basis, it will shorten the lifespan of your saw. Otherwise, keep giving old men like me new ideas to save time and energy. Thx!

      wont water make the chain rust over time? how about just regular chainsaw bar oil to keep it cool

    I wonder if it is possible to use the two sections of an extension ladder instead. It looks like the part attached to the saw could be made to slide along an aluminium ladder. 🤔

    So get a grinder that you squeeze the trigger it runs you let go it stops if that thing gets loose your getting hurt bad. Second use some dam oil when you drill threw metal. Third if your welding something to galvanized wear a respirator. Other than that it's a good idea adding some rollers would be a good idea and also you could add some all thread to both sides put a measurement scale on it so you could raise and lower it easier. You can also attach a handle with a simple biclicle brake to work the gas so you dont gotta bend over all day. And a good ripping chain would help you a ton. And since your using metal and can weld good enough to make it stick you could also add adjustable stops behind your logs to be able to adjust to hold all kinds of log sizes easily.

    This version of jig works okay with shorter chains but not so accurate with over 12" planks..thanks for sharing.

    • @chicchoc9
      @chicchoc9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure why you would say that. Please explain. I would think if he had a larger saw, with a 24" or even 36" bar, as long as the jig keeps the saw and bar steady, the bar would not flex (much) in the cut... Most slabs will have to be planed or router flattened before making any tables, etc to remove saw marks. So I can't see why this would not cut to an acceptable straightness. Great idea on this type or mill. I was planning a similar "side held" mill when i cam across this video.

    Not bad at all, I think with a bit more work the inclusion of some legs, and ramps to roll the log up onto a frame and a couple of dogs to secure it you would be able to work at a comfortable height, I like the video of making it , Im a make it myself bloke and C channel and simple arc welding makes it pretty easy.
