  • Let's try out $108 sewing scissors hand crafted in Sheffield, England by skilled artisans. These are the 8-inch Wilkinson Gold Sidebents by William Whiteley & Sons, a family-run scissor manufacturing company that started in 1760. How do they compare with my (relatively) more budget-friendly Gingher 8-inch Knife Edge Dressmaker's Shears

    Interesting.....a company that old with a product so fine still in existence, there's no words. So many legacy sewing brands like Singer go by the wayside altogether or get bought out and the quality is lacking. These scissors make me think of my grandma's Singer treadle machine,, I have it now and it STILL works! Thank you for sharing this. If I wanna splurge this would be the place and it makes sense. Scissors in your sewing room are a must--- GOOD SCISSORS are practically your right arm.

    Sheffield's steel history is extremely deep. Last year I popped into a museum there (millennium gallery) and those scissors were in a display and it certainly put into perspective the pride the city has for it's roots

    I’m impressed with the history and heritage of the company. The artisanship in the making of the scissors really spoke to me, and my first thought was “Gosh, they charge only $108? I’ll be interested to find out how they perform over the years. On the other hand, I’ve had my Gingher shears for quite a while, and they’re wonderful. My mom’s been gone for 18 years. She had Gingher pinking shears that are now mine. They are so much better than other pinking shears I’ve tried, there’s just no comparison. I bought some Fiskar pinking shears for my granddaughter and ended up throwing them away.

      It's kind of sad how conditioned we are to buying cheap, mass produced goods. Whitely's employs skilled craftspeople and uses time-honored traditions. I'm glad they are still around and sharing this art with consumers who appreciate and can afford this type of product.

    I got my Gingher Shears back in the mid 1980s. I was taking a sewing class at the local tech college and the teacher got a deal on a bulk order, so we all bought them, and for me at the time spending $35.00 on a pair of shears was a big deal. (Also got my first Rowenta iron on a similar type deal at the same time, and that first on lasted over 20 years.) Anyway, to this day I still love and use my Ginghers, and also own their pinking shears and some embroidery scissors. I am also a fan of the Kai serrated fabric shears. Once my daughter started sewing, and stuck with it, (over 11 years now), she'd "earned her Ginghers" and I bought her a pair for her birthday. I'd not heard of this Whitely brand before, and if I were in need of some great shears, I'd look into it.

  • @greekveteran2715

    Unfortunately, many people ,even though they aren't even at a beginner level on sharpening, claim they can sharpen knives or scissors, with the same reslut always, your tool geting ruined, instead of coming back to you properly shrpened. I do sharpen/repair knives and scissors for living, since the late 80s. You won't believe, hoew many times a customer, bropught me a pair of scissors or knives, that someone who had told them he knew how to, not only he didn't but he completely destroed, all thse people's tools. So.. Always trust a known professionalk.The more well know he is at his job, the better.

    Here I thought I was spendy for getting a pair of Ginghers from Joann's on sale. LoL. I am obsessed with scissors and blades. I loathe dull blades with all my being. I always make sure I have sharp cutting tools. I just wish I had chosen better than I did for pinking shears because the ones I chose cut well but are hella uncomfortable.

      My 40 year old Singer pinking shears are more comfortable than my mom’s Gingher’s for my hands, but they both cut well. 😊 Try looking for estate sales. It’s amazing what you can find there. Yesterday I found 2 drawers of old thread, not usable anymore, but with wooden spools! I see a special project coming my way!

    • @meganmills6545
      @meganmills6545 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lynnshepard7485 I love the old wooden spools as I have antique machines that don't like cross-wound thread without adding a special contraption or thread stand (something I'm not so keen on when I'm aiming for an authentic historical look in the use of the antique machines). So I got a little gadget that lets you wind stack-wound spools of new thread onto your average wooden cotton reels using the bobbin winder on your electric machine. I had trouble getting a smooth result until I put my machine in "slow sewing" mode - then it worked like a charm. There are youtube vids of it (and other methods people have used to do the same) so if you want to keep your wooden cotton reels for sewing, but use modern thread, you can do it. :-)

    I have bought these and Ernst Wright whih costing £260 about $316 dollars. However buying a pair of Japanese made ones costing £78! Its ironic that. TBH nothing is made in England any more and you can see why the price is sky high! It goodnight form Britian and British Industry.
