Twenty First Nations representing 13,000 Natives along the pipeline route voted for the approval of it by 85%. Their leaders, including Heredity Chiefs, were in discussions with industry since 2012 hashing out the details before coming to an agreement. Only 5 of the 13 Heredity Chiefs were opposed to the pipeline. So, why is Bellegarde saying that more consultation is required and the Heredity Chiefs were not consulted? Is democracy different among First Nations and approval can only happen with 100% agreeing and the majority not win? Now that these Eastern Native Chiefs have decided to support the 5 Heredity Chiefs not in agreement with the pipeline, who is going to protest for the 85% that actually live in the territory and want it built?

LOL at “is democracy different among First Nations?” That’s the problem, it is a culture that you know nothing of, but make assumptions in order to make the pieces fit. Democracy is nothing but tyranny of the masses, two wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner.

    • @1aargle

@@Borninafire Unless you are Wet'suwet'en I doubt that you understand their culture either. If they didn't believe in democracy they wouldn't have held a vote......right? People that think that they know what is best for other people and force their views upon them are the wolves when the sheep merely want to live their own lives.

You're right what the wet'suwet'en need to do is take care of this on their own. There is no reconciliation when it comes to this. The people have voted and they have spoken for their nation and a band of misfits seem to think otherwise and other nations decided to give their two cents when it doesnt involve them.

    It is shocking!
Their news agency employers need to insist that they have informed journalists representing them.
I've lived too long to listen to these journalists who don't investigate first, and then ask really ignorant questions.
Have they, the journalists made inroads to build respect for relationship with the people in order to see both sides.

Thank goodness! Thank you for your strong leadership, powerful!
We can do it! Reconciliation is long overdue through peaceful means, but it is due!
Most new-comers to Canada have NO idea how former Canadian Governments/crown basically broke the treaties with indigenous people.
Some of the hatred is ignorance.
It is clear to me that it is time again to "deal". It is NOT extortion! It is a crossroad, awkward, frustrating, and we all look forward to a solution, long term.
I appreciate the request for dialogue from all parties, now that is wisdom!
The journalists want to make drama by the way of their questions. They need to look into the history, and ask intelligent questions.
Also, thank you for giving a bit of a history.

So much for Article 35 of Canada's Constitution calling for due consultation with First Nations people. What happens when the ones who stand to bear the impact the most - the Wetsuetin - decide they're FOR the pipeline and a minority of FN people in that area decide that's not good enough, and sounds an alarm right across the nation to disrupt everyone's lives and over-rule the people who actually live in the area where the pipeline is intended to go? What's the difference between that and a child throwing a temper tantrum for not getting his own way? Up to now I was a strong supporter of First Nations culture and people; now, not so much. I'm sick to death of the narrative that says white people have all the perks and only FN people are suffering in poverty and degrading circumstances, when the truth is their temper tantrums grievously impact many NON-First Nations Canadian families who are ALSO in poverty, hoping their parents get to work on time to get a paycheck and bring home the basics. Perhaps the most insulting of all is the determination to condemn ALL white families when many have no clue how and when their basic needs will be met as well, while the global corporations and foreign interests continue to defraud Canadians of all backgrounds.

T2 is guilty of many sins and shortages, but I would not blame him for this particular issue. The way T2 acts in soving this conflict is a typical Canadian way of solving conflicts. I saw it many time in business setting here in Canada. You saw it in the CBC news covering the way Canada vote in the UN. 50-50 aprroach. Shortage of determination and decisiveness. Fear to assault feeling of others. Fear to make the flames hotter. Sometimes it make sense, in most times - is not. The specific way Canadians try to solve conflicts is apparent for the people of other cultures.
Here is how other cultures would approach this conflict:
Putin, the former KGB, would send riot police in large numbers to put the demonstrators “face-on asphalt”. In parallel the FSB (former KGB) officers would put small bag of drugs in the demonstrators pockets in stealthy way so that corrupted judge could put the demonstrator in jail for 10 years for drugs possession.
Chinese Comrad Xi, would charge them to death penalty and shortly before the execution would have their essential organs for transplantation, removed.
North Korean Comrad Yin would feed them to hungry dogs.
Syrian President Assad would have their eyes removed and have tanks move on them slowly while they are still alive. The key word is S-L-O-W-L-Y.
Palestinian Hamas in Gaza would put them against the masonry wall and would shot them for collaboration with the Zionists and without any due process.
Peres and Rabin would negotiate with them for 27 years and would pay them monthly stipend so that they could pretend that they want peace until Trump present his plan to solve the conflict.

The true voices of Indigenious Canadians have not been taken seriously for over a hundred years. That is why they have stopped the Railroad as in years past. Does Canada allow the rape if our lands and people for peanuts. 20 billion is a drop in the bucket compared to loss of our resources such as watershed and rivers. We must protect water for all Canadians. East and West.

Natives should be concerned about their population % in Canada an how the government treats Canadians like 2nd class citizens , buys off New citizens with handouts an votes , also how many left wing people are pretending to be 6 nations to cause trouble an misinformation .
The Transportation an energy sector depends on farmers just as much as they do on them , pipe lines on land are safer an easy to clean up then sending oil to China or Saudi oil , I'm sure the natives of Canada can speak with Natives in the US to all prosper . Yes spills happen , but we all can be apart of cleaning . but I think this has also alot to do with left wing politics an ideas that will cripple a system that will only turn things in a far worse direction . But the Liberals want the Coastal GasLink route. The Coastal GasLink Pipeline is a TC Energy natural gas pipeline under construction in British Columbia, Canada. Starting in Dawson Creek, the pipeline's route crosses through the Canadian Rockies and other mountain ranges to Kitimat, where the gas will be exported to Asian customer..... I myself would rather see the pipelines go through North Dakota an all Natives be apart of the process an Jobs an safety an clean up an spills . then the Higher % of oil tankers crossing the Pacific ..Let the Chinese get their oil from the Middle East !

I don't understand why the protesters set up blockades on property that does not belong to them to protest for their own lands. This does not make any sense to me. Isn't this really all about greed and money. Is there really anyone in this country who does not have access to public services such as healthcare, and safety and protection, clean water and adequate housing and the right to work and the right to worship. From everything that I see people from all nations in the world that come to Canada or live in Canada everyone's basic needs are cared for. Any more than that and the individual should work for what they want. The Canadian population can no longer support the number of people who are expecting handouts from the government. Do people not realize that the government gets their money from taxing the people. Am I correct in that aboriginal peoples do not pay Federal and provincial taxes.

Very good Assembly of the Chiefs about Indian act but in the big picture giving money to protesters is a crime against Canadians and the First Nation , if Canada can get its LNG to the Asian market we would put USA in a recession like they are doing to us and will keep doing to us . The only way to make Canada strong is to be self sufficient and to make safer pipe lines and show the world that we are the leaders in protecting the environment and which we are and refuse and USA companies from working here as they have been in control of our oil and gas for decades and for Irving Oil importing oil from USA 54% , Saudi Arabia 11% , Iraq 8 % and Norway 5% .

What a complete and utter disaster. A small group of hereditary chiefs goes against the wishes of 20 different Native tribes along the pipeline route INCLUDING the Wet'suwet'en tribe!!!! All of the 20 bands had signed on to endorse the pipeline because it would provide funding for their own people. So the hereditary chiefs are actually against the 20 bands. But who gets punished by the blockades??? Ordinary Canadians. Why don't these protesters take a moment and look at the facts? It is an absolute disaster. No one with any common sense and objectively looking at the facts would agree with them.
