I got a free sticker for applying to one of their positions, ended up buying socks too. Used their platform for a few months in my previous company and you can feel they are different when using it. They are awesome.
I like this model of "we get more revenue when our customers get more revenue" rather than "we get more revenue regardless if the customer gets any revenue."
Why? Because competition was cheaper and more people picked the alternative options - as well as self-hosting. The new prices undercut competition and will make it viable again… for the time being. Nobody believes this ‚We felt bad for making too much money‘-crap, aside from Theo.
The tone in this is really awkward. Feels like an infomercial. While I do believe Theo believes what he's saying there's just something very awkward and non compelling
Also the pricing between mixpanel and posthog is almost identical. Mixpanel 10M: $1,176.00 Posthog 10M: $1,080.00. With the yearly option, mixpanel is even cheaper than posthog...
Watched this after the video on the wordpress situation and it made me think of your point about "investors being essential" vs this video. Because being a loss-leader and your prices going up rather than down is something I have seen so many times with lots of software companies the moment they took investments anywhere from seed to series A, B, etc... I checked crunchbase and Posthog has taken 4 rounds of funding for a total of $27.2 million and I couldn't be happier to see that this didn't coincide with the typical SaaS startup route of prices going up, new features being either not in the OSS version at all, or being locked behind enterprise plan licensing, but sadly that makes Posthog the exception, rather than the rule. I suppose not spending all that money on intense marketing and sales would make the investor money last a LOT longer, since they aren't buying market share with that VC money. To circle all the way back to the essential investor comment from the other video, do you think Posthog could make it this far without taking on investor money? How much longer would it take if so?
You should do a tutorial on how to migrate from google analytics to posthug specially about proper integration to inform adsense if that's even possible. Google analytics has become completely unusable trying to encode privacy legislation along with a very complex setup.
@@OG24Chat yes, they do transparently say that they use it to learn and gather information about the user, ending up feeding chat gpt with it, but other do as well, just they also charge you for it 😂

I love what posthog is doind but they are NOT open source. They only have a hobby version available with a lot of stripped features. It is recommended to up to 100 000 events/mo (their free tier on the site is 1 000 000/mo). This is NOT open source
core posthog is licenced under the MIT licence, its 3rd party components are licenced under the original licence provided by its owner. The "ee/" directory is licenced under the Posthog enterprise licence. So your comment is semi-true.
@@martinlesko1521 some parts of posthog are not public at all. For me that functionality (the one that allows posthog to scale) is core. I understand why they made those decisions, but calling that oss is misleading
I haven't used Posthog but Free Google Analytics is a massive pain to use. I still have PTSD from GA4. The basic pre-built stuff is okay and if that's all you ever use then you'll be fine but as soon as you try do something that doesn't fit their pre-built stuff (like custom events), it can be very painful to setup and use. Only thing that was really great about GA4 was their debug mode where you can hook your page or app up to their debug page and watch all the configured events fire in real-time to debug your analytics setup and make sure the right events are firing at the right time. Also, if you decide to use GA4 through Tag Manager, things immediately get twice as complex to setup when using custom events. At this point, analytics becomes an entire job function on it's own - not something you can just setup once and forget about, especially if your app/product/website/pages change very often. We did use Mixpanel at one stage and custom events were an absolute breeze. You send whatever events you want and then configure your graphs in Mixpanel. GA4 with Tag Manager was extremely painful for this.
its probably hooking trap before was too expensive so didnt have much user now with cheap will hook more user and then raise the price as every corps do
Posthog: we are open source! Open source posthog: only allows ONE project. Does anyone know a developer who needs analytics for a SINGLE project?? No dev environment, no side projects, ONE project only. Imagine linux, supabase, mysql, postgres only allowing a single database and a single user. That's not called "open source", that's called "free trial".
Wait, so if I understand correctly what's said in Part 2, when you had 1 event before, if you want to have the same data, you have to use 2 events now ? That invalidates a bit the cost savings.
Posthog devs are also awesome. I got a discount code on their merch when I submitted a few PRs fixing bugs
That's so cool!

To be fair, lower profits per unit can sometimes mean higher overall profitability if it increases volume enough.
