Copenhagen vlog coming soon! In the meanwhile if you missed my Northern Europe trip vlog, here's the first episode th-cam.com/video/zcVnHX9NMW0/w-d-xo.html
lol Not offended, but I am a Finn living in France and I don't value the French food or bread as highly as it seems to be valued world wide. Reason being mainly that it is full of ingredients I am not very found of. For example olives are horrible in my opinion. So is blue cheese. Now we have very nice brand of blue cheese in Finland too - so I have been told by those who taste it - but I will feel sick enough from the sheer smell and taste to feel like to throw up. Simple reason probably is that I have not gotten accustomed to some few ingredients young enough to be able to tolerate them. And for you - it probably is the fact that norther food is based on fresh seasonal ingredients from local sources from the forest and sea to gardens - on the base taste of set ingredients rather than using notably much spices. Your tongue has been over coated with much more spices in food in general than the norther tongue. I am more costumed to them. But for example my own mother will get sick from spicy food. In Finland - people also do not really go out to restaurants to eat. Making a restaurant to succeed in Finland is hard as hell simply because people will rather make the food at house than pay for it. All Finnish homes have a built in kitchen - but in France that is not really necessarily so - meaning that those necessary to cook with appliances can in fact be at first missing from a flat if one purchases a cheaper place. In Finland selling a flat at that condition would be illegal because it is illegal to remove any existing stoves, fridges and such when moving. So yea, we all have some short of a kitchen to cook at. And thus people will do - it just is cheaper - and at least in my family, also far better food than one gets for the same money at a restaurant. We will eat seasonally. We fish, hunt, gather wild food from forests, grow things in garden and fields. We will store food for winter in freezers and cellars - even to the point that there is not always need to buy everything from a store. That is the kind of an food environment I grew up with. There was fresh fish even in dead of winter - because it is possible to fish under ice and we have rights for it. No random meal to heat up from a store or restaurant can really beat good homemade food, which is not just a tiny spot on a grand plate - which leaves you only wanting to go for the pizza on the way home. By the way - most towns in Finland do not even have home delivery for such foods - simply cause they don't get business enough to afford to offer the service. Norther people are not restaurant folks. As for equal rights. I am a woman. If you as a woman are not prepared to open that door for your man once a while and not prepared carry your own part of what ever needs carrying - then you have no business asking for equal rights. Yea I put it bit strictly but I noted that these days there are women out there who want equality but demand special treatment as well and it is probably some bit confusing for men. The fact is that both genders need to meet each other half way. So yea, you need to learn to use that hammer to hang the picture up. The only reason for not possibly doing so is when you simply do not have enough strength for it - for example, if you are ill and have some physical obstacles due that. I dislike a lot the fact that I am in that kind of a situation health vise - I was not always - and while my husband is swift to help me seeing no issues about it - I myself would want to be able to do a lot more, like I used to and like I know to. I have noted something though - living rather south (France) - norther women and people in general are taller and larger. I for example have issues finding things to wear in France, bra and shoes mainly, because the sizes here kinda stop before mine and even if I would find otherwise right size - the mouth of the shoe to put the foot in is far far too tight to get the foot in. Now like I said before, I am ill with rare spinal condition, which has nothing to do with wear and tear or life style or such. It is just a condition which decided to activate later, while I was healthy at younger age. There is no cure either. But as it was not like this always, I used to be strong - the way to have long endurance over lot of bursting power. I would literally take hold of a log from one end and carry it together with my dad. I would easily hold entire double bend in place while being moved up on a loft.. while it was hanging off the edge.. while my parents changed place to get a better hold of it to move it further up. And point of explaining this is that northern women grow up doing quite heavy things on their own. I certainly am not supposed to do it - but if I were to try, I suspect I could very easily lift my husband up and carry him. I still have absolutely no issues in opening cans or jars - unless my hands are for some reason at sensitive state - like having hurt them or such. And I most certainly have pride not to ask that help cause it is kinda - well not really appropriate a way to do that 'weaker than you' thing just to seem attractive. My French husband was literally stunned when he visited first time in Finland and saw some women working at road construction site middle of night side by side with the men. He said that would never happen in France. I suppose in one hand that would not be really safe for those ladies here in France. But notably - in Finland it is. You will not need to fear at night, no matter weather there is light of summer or darkness of winter that someone will try to rob or attack you, just cause you are female. Same goes for not having to listen cat calls. No woman will be judged for a skimpy outfit. Men are supposed to be able to to not think instantly about sex even if they were to see a nude woman - that is how boys grow up in north. I mean, for example Sauna is all about bathing and cleansing your body - yes you go in nude - but nope, nothing to do with sex. In north nudity does not instantly compute to sexual things. And so also having a short skirt is by no means an excuse to assume an invitation - the cultures just do not see things in that way up north. And that brings me to the point of, when you gave advise to southern men to be careful not to offend by trying to do things that us norther ladies will choose to do our selves - you probably did not know that - they should also understand that when a norther woman replies NO to their advances the whole society expects that he takes it very seriously. She is not playing hard to get, she is literally making her final statement there and then and will feel really weird if he tries to push on. Also we are not the kind who will take compliments without wondering why the man is being so extraordinarily nice - and if there is something dubious about it. Now some ladies are more playful than others in healthy sense about reacting to advances - but generally one should really take a NO very seriously. I for sure am exactly like that. When I found my husband - I went for him. I did not play and try to tease - or to be hard to get, the distance between two countries was an obstacle enough - I decided that he will be mine if he wants to and if he does not - then I will not try again. In my country people will literally just end up dating. They meet, start to spend time and that pretty much means they are dating. There is no such thing as going out to meet with many different women or men during same time period. And no healthy relation ship tests or plays back and forth about weather you like the other or not. These things are far more strait forward - cause playing those tricks only hurt. And a Finn especially may not use the words of love, but very rarely - but when those are spoken it is absolutely for real. We don't 'love' strawberries even if we absolutely like them. Love is highly special word. Also a Finn can sit in their beloveds or friends company for minutes completely silent and feel nothing weird about it - that is how valued and accepted silence is as form of being together. My husband has told me that he values the fact that I do not play and tease with emotional things. I don't test. I do not ask if my big ass looks fat in some clothes, I know my own size well enough - lol. I don't ask if he loves me. I don't ask if he thinks I am pretty. All those kind of things are for him to tell me if and when he so wants - I don't need to hear them all the time, that is just ridiculous. But at the same time - I sure ass hell expect that he will do half of the household work together with me. I never ask for that help though, because he is grown up man, he needs not to be told what to do (in fact he should not even) - he should be able to and can absolutely see such things on his own. And if my back was not such bad due my illness that I am retired due it - I would also be still doing things like changing the tires of a car when needed on my own, or for him, should he need that help. That does not make me any less feminine or womanly. It just means that I grew up to get things done weather I have a partner or not - but it does not mean my heart does not need the love of my man. So even if I was not in fact disabled. Point is that up north, being independent on this level is what being a honest woman, with strait forward personality, which me do value. Our men don't look for women who constantly need help. I learned to do that stuff from my dad, as I was mainly his daughter at heart. Equality is two way deal or it is not true equality. Benefits without putting our own foot into the same ditch is not the right way.
Absolutely love this woman she is absolutely telling everybody what you really want to hear when you are actually going to be living there as a member of their society thank you very much and you are very beautiful and I should never been living in the United States :-)
Northern Europe has lots to look forward to, visit, sight see, behold, field trip, vacation to, stop at, and take note at but compared to Southern Europe it does not have as much of a boost to it yeah yeah
The main reason why dishes in northern countries may seem drab might be indeed due to the lack of vegetables and fruits. Btw in Sweden I discovered that meals can combine meat and something sweet. For instance, meat balls sprinkled with jam. I'd never mixed meat meals with sweets before. And it made me refresh my view of cooking.
Yes the Swedish meatballs and jam became famous in the whole Europe thanks to Ikea 😅 but I noticed combination between meat and sweet sauces in Germany and Norway too. In Italy where I come from we NEVER mix sweet and savory, which in the US is common practice! Where are you from?
@@WhatashameMaryJane :) It must have probably been so:) Hopefully I will be able to visit Italy one day and discover the original Italian cuisine! I've been living in Moscow for the last 6 years.
Alexx Miller I hope you will cause it’s delicious...🤤 But there’s really nothing original about it, it’s infact very very traditional (and that’s why it’s so good 😉)
I agree with all your points, sorry I can't disagree. In fact, you mentioned something about maternity leave being more generous in many northern countries that I had never considered to be a factor in Italy's relatively low birth rate - I think this is a good insight. If the Italian government wants more babies they probably need to support mum's (and dads) better in taking time off etc for kids.
@WhatashameMaryJane Sweden, Denmark, places like this people are really tall they can consume milk which is interesting. In the South very different food garlic noodles
I grew up in a tiny little town in California . I was wondering what I should know before i move to Europe? Or were is the best town for someone who has never been out of the United States
Hi Amanda. If you’d like to go to Europe somehow prepared, there are many videos on TH-cam where expats tell what the differences are. I have a few on my channel as well, here th-cam.com/play/PLLn9YKWH2mmTkY35zxglXKOza2CrbO1T6.html There are many countries in Europe, which all have something in common from an American point of view, but once you start looking at them you realize that they’re all very different from one another. To understand which one would suit you best I would ask you: why do you want to leave your small town? Why do you want to leave California? Why do you want to leave the United States? And finally why do you want to move to Europe?
haha Ik ga stuk. Toen ze begon over met AL die kledingstukken in een trein stappen waar t can 25graden is als je van buiten komt waar t -5 is😂 en dat je dan helemaal smelt. Dat is zo herkenbaar😂😂
@@WhatashameMaryJane That's what I loved about Norway. Sitting indoors with a glass of wine all snug while watching the snow falling gently outside :) I did find quite a limited choice of food there as you say. Also, even with lots of spending money, all I could only seem to afford were hotdogs LOL
Nearly six months of the year depressingly dark and cold, what would you do to increase your oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins hormones ? of course you have plenty of sex. and as a by products you produce babies.
I guess you would just play melodic death metal to get all the dopamine and endorphins hormones by headbanging. I wouldn't be surprised since most of those band come from there
About the food we like our products in the North and we like our personal and national tastes. That’s what makes us … us and that’s what makes you …. you. I never really listen to Italians complaining about cuisine in other countries because they have the nerve to deride French cuisine which encompasses just about every type there is from Mediterranean in the southern regions to western fishing culture and seafood to the wonderful galettes in Brittany, Germanic food in the East and varied French styles all over. So anytime I hear an Italian critiquing I just roll my eyes.
I honestly don't. I made this video at the end of a trip that I took through UK, the Netherlands, Northern Germany and Scandinavia. I know it's not what it's typically labelled as "Northern Europe", so the reason of the inaccuracy of this title is practicality.
@Luke T I would imagine the Nordic countries, and the baltic countries and maybe (Scotland) being Northern Europe. I would disagree with Germany, England and Netherlands
@@juicylemon4154 I think these countries are northern Europe. If I had to split Europe into north and south. France, Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal would be south. Maybe even Switzerland
What a shame Mary Jane yes, it is very accurate, northern Europe is basically the countries that speak germanic languages, and that are, for most of them usually of protestant culture.
I’ve been to almost all of Northern European countries and part of my family is living in Germany and Netherlands. I find Denmark is a mixing of Germany+Netherlands. Stockholm, Helsinki and Oslo have more Nordic features.
@WhatashameMaryJane Wow when you made this video I was moving away from Texas. I was living in Chicago I didn't know how many people immigrated to Chicago. Very large Chinese and Polish communities.
It's time to introduce Italian food to northern European people☺️ In Pakistan we also make sure food properly cooked and its spicy with different flavors and alot of things included.
Italian food is in northern Europe (at least in UK). I couldn't even give you a number of the amount Italian restaurants in even the smallest of towns.
Actually in northern Europe it is almost impossible to find local restaurants... almost only Mediterranean style restaurants. It seems northern European do not like their own cuisines.
@@l_vwv_l It's sometimes hard to get an accurate reading because some surveys will only give you Iceland, Norway, Sweden Finland and Denmark as northern, but some surveys will give you: United Kingdom Sweden Denmark Finland Norway Ireland Lithuania Latvia Estonia Iceland Channel Islands Isle of Man Faeroe Islands
Western: Germany France Netherlands Belgium Austria Switzerland Luxembourg Monaco Liechtenstein. Southern: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, East Thrace (Turkey), Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, and Spain. Eastern: Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and the western part of the Russian Federation
My family is from Norway and my wife's is from Finland. Of course we were both born in the US, but I would say you have it pretty accurate. Koselig og hyttetur remained in the family, and we added sauna after I married my wife. Those seemed worth keeping. The food no. My dad ate the most disgusting things, but for him it was all about Kilocalories. Food was fuel and you needed it. That was it. Nothing more. (google madpakke - that was him, every day). As to the social things, google Janteloven. It is more than just between men and women. Everybody pretends to be equal and no one is better than anyone else (at least in theory). Contrast this with Italy. When I was there (now it was 40 years ago, so grain of salt) there were so many complex social rules about everything - especially in business. Who could sit where, who could speak at meetings, who ate first at dinner, all the deference to the senior managers who were almost always men who were part of powerful interconnected families etc. It seemed like a very complex social hierarchy only Italians understood. VERY different than the Nordic culture - or even the US one. But now you are in the US, where we are all mixed up together with people from all over the world, so we sort it out. P.S. - You should visit Finland. In winter. In the North. Then you will see a different culture!
Hi David thanks for the thorough comment, I appreciate it. I learned from you about Janteloven, I had never heard about it before. I just read the Wikipedia page related to the concept, I must say it sounded pretty odd and difficult to comprehend, at least to me. I find that we also have a similar feeling in Italy, but I don't consider it as only negative. I would love to visit Finland, especially in the winter. I know very little about their culture.
@@WhatashameMaryJane Yeah, to be honest I think the "jantelov" thing is found in many small communities throughout the world, not just Norway. Norwegian cuisine is pretty simplistic or at times "boring", though, yes. A lot of it is really good (IMO), but yes, we still often bring sandwiches from home for our lunches at school or work, for example. It's incredibly healthy, though :) . Varied, not much processed foods, and lots of fruits, vegetables, fish :) .
you know, you seem like never have lived in the countryside. you have never ate herring, rye bread, drank beer, celebrated Midsummer with a large campfire, with people at the Midsummer Ball. YOU HAVE NOT SEEN RURAL LIFE. that's why you say you don't like the food. in baltic countrys we live happy with what we have. we are not picky, we go and work hard all day. in the garden, weeding the grass. we are grateful for the whole dish, and even for the ordinary rye bread with butter. and we are happy with that.
I also included the Dutch, which are not really part of it. This video was made in the context of a trip I was taking, therefore it applies to the countries I visited 🙂 You find the whole trip in this playlist th-cam.com/play/PLLn9YKWH2mmQMXAYw3SjS1olJdoNP9Nz4.html
You are very open minded with gender equality thing. And you understand that men and woman has a big difference, kudos to you. Not that I am against it either, it's just really weird when there are sort of position that are naturally effect for men/woman specifically. You are an intellectual individual, I must subscribe, also I have a crush on you. Damn those eyes... Aloha from Hawai'i!
I totally agree with you in what you said about differences between genders. Personally I really can't stand no moore males with too much female attitudes and behaviours, and reverse. So many people have lost theyr real identity. Watcing you I can see an 100% woman ( ..or gilr if you please) May be this sounds a little bit cruel, but it's just my opinion. World of Travels Where do you come from? I would say in some countries is stronger, in other is weaker. There’s always a food culture cause everyone had to eat 😊 Even in Scandinavia there are traditional dishes and cooking techniques, some of them are very good and interesting!! I guess food there is not the priority, like it is for example in my country, Italy.
@@WhatashameMaryJane what I was trying to explain is most part in Europe they do not emphasize in cuisine. Places like Denmark, Netherlands and Germany etc. When you compare Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey they are rich in food culture. Their lives evolve around food. Whereas in Denmark I haven't seen any. I visited Denmark last year in May. After a long walk it was time to eat and I wanted local food. When I asked what their local food was the waitress at a restaurant told me it was a slice of toasted bread with you own pick of toppings like salmon, tuna or chicken and added salad with a drizzle of dressing. Whst is this? In my country in the US we make a snack out of it. So I ended up finding another restaurant where they served Falafel. I was disappointed not to be able to try out a real local cuisine in Denmark.
World of Travels Oh I do understand perfectly. I was in Copenhagen a few days ago and I also asked what was their typical food and I got the same answer. So disappointed. Later I did some research though, and I discovered that this smørrebrød is not simply a “snack sandwich”, like we would call it... It’s an important part of their tradition and includes, aside of their rich bread, which we could only dream of in other countries, many typical different kinds of food on top. But I do agree with you, it’s still a slice of bread with other ingredients on top, certainly not much creativity there. It definitely shows the fact that food is not a priority.

@@kuukuhackman7095 Why do you suppose that my parents have different nationalities?
@@WhatashameMaryJane Because the name Mary Jane is British.
@@kuukuhackman7095 Oh I see. No Mary Jane is not my real name, I'm 100% Italian and so my parents.
I have a few on my channel as well, here th-cam.com/play/PLLn9YKWH2mmTkY35zxglXKOza2CrbO1T6.html
There are many countries in Europe, which all have something in common from an American point of view, but once you start looking at them you realize that they’re all very different from one another. To understand which one would suit you best I would ask you: why do you want to leave your small town? Why do you want to leave California? Why do you want to leave the United States? And finally why do you want to move to Europe?
How do you get the money to take this amazing trip? I wish I could
Just come to Latvia for great food of North European vibe. There is possibilities to find food for everyones taste!
Learning about my history.. I am related to king Henry Tudor the 7th
I agreed what you said about everything .
I want to find my soulmate anymore. So next summer, I will go on a northern europe tour.
Love this! I'm American of Northern European descent but Southern Europeans have the best food hands down!!

Grazie Stefano e mi fa piacere sentirlo! In Italia gli uomini (ma anche le donne) sono un po' indietro su questo, a mio parere.
This channel is awesome!
Northern Europeans make good money, have excellent healthcare and can afford kids... which Italy cannot.
Awwwww, you look really cozy. I love Norway so much. Love your video, makes me feel all cozy too x
Andi Jones Ahaha yes I’m glad I could communicate some of that cosiness 😊
@@WhatashameMaryJane That's what I loved about Norway. Sitting indoors with a glass of wine all snug while watching the snow falling gently outside :) I did find quite a limited choice of food there as you say. Also, even with lots of spending money, all I could only seem to afford were hotdogs LOL
Andi Jones Lol 😂
Hotdogs are quite expensive in Norway 😋 There is no problem to use between 7-12 Euros on a hotdog, usually of very good quality though.
@@odd-hallvardyksny7126 Yeah Norway has the best quality hot dogs I've ever tried. That reindeer one at 3kroneren in Bergen... 😋
Nearly six months of the year depressingly dark and cold, what would you do to increase your oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins hormones ? of course you have plenty of sex. and as a by products you produce babies.
Contraceptives are extremely common and very much used in Northern Europe
I guess you would just play melodic death metal to get all the dopamine and endorphins hormones by headbanging.
I wouldn't be surprised since most of those band come from there
I'm a England & Northwestern Europe 8%

About the food we like our products in the North and we like our personal and national tastes. That’s what makes us … us and that’s what makes you …. you.
I never really listen to Italians complaining about cuisine in other countries because they have the nerve to deride French cuisine which encompasses just about every type there is from Mediterranean in the southern regions to western fishing culture and seafood to the wonderful galettes in Brittany, Germanic food in the East and varied French styles all over.
So anytime I hear an Italian critiquing I just roll my eyes.
What do you think about India?
I keep the fire burning in the fire place . and shovel snow.
What do you class as northern European? Asking as a southern european
I honestly don't. I made this video at the end of a trip that I took through UK, the Netherlands, Northern Germany and Scandinavia. I know it's not what it's typically labelled as "Northern Europe", so the reason of the inaccuracy of this title is practicality.
@@WhatashameMaryJane I agree with the list. Generally is northern Europe
@Luke T
I would imagine the Nordic countries, and the baltic countries and maybe (Scotland) being Northern Europe.
Youre such a sweetheart!!
I’ve been to almost all of Northern European countries and part of my family is living in Germany and Netherlands. I find Denmark is a mixing of Germany+Netherlands. Stockholm, Helsinki and Oslo have more Nordic features.
Burak Interesting, thanks for sharing! Where are you from? Is Burak your name?
What a shame Mary Jane yep that’s my name. Actually I’m from Turkey, stayed many times also both countries (NL and Germany)
@WhatashameMaryJane Wow when you made this video I was moving away from Texas. I was living in Chicago I didn't know how many people immigrated to Chicago. Very large Chinese and Polish communities.
My ancestors come from there
Pay attention to the pronunciation of SOUTHERN!
It's time to introduce Italian food to northern European people☺️
In Pakistan we also make sure food properly cooked and its spicy with different flavors and alot of things included.

Bravissima!! Cheers!
Grazie!

I’m really sorry, but you forget about Estonia and Latvia
you know, you seem like never have lived in the countryside. you have never ate herring, rye bread, drank beer, celebrated Midsummer with a large campfire, with people at the Midsummer Ball.
You seem to have not listened with what I said in the video... 🤔

There is no food culture in some parts of Europe.
Did you at least try it in the end?
