Wow! Great explanation of exactly what I’m experiencing. I had my surgery on Friday morning (9/9) and today is Thursday (9/15). At this point my biggest worry is remembering not to touch or rub my eye as it feels PERFECTLY NORMAL!! I had some ring around lights, scratchy feeling where the insidious is, and some flickering on the outer edge of my vision. But as of this morning that is ALL GONE!! One thing I’d like to mention that you didn’t is the difference in colors. Since I have cataracts in both eyes I had no idea my color perception was off. Now WOW!! No more amber/yellowish tint to everything. I’m amazed at how white and clean everything looks. I had no idea I had such bright Sigurd trim molding in my house. Anyone nervous about undergoing the procedure, don’t be as soon as the relaxing medicine when into my IV I remained alert and able to converse and follow commands but I simply didn’t care. My procedure took about 30 min. In total I was at the surgicenter for about 2 hours. Can’t wait to get the other eye done. Oh, and I could read the eye chart very well the same day as my surgery as my post op appointment

I stumbled upon your video after having my second eye operated on here in hot and muggy Bangkok. (My third eye is fine) My surgeon is “terse” in post-op consults so your video has helped allay some concerns I’ve had. The clarity, after 75 years that my dear eyes have been with me, is striking. I now know how Superman felt. Thanks very much.

This is a wonderful video. Can you add the most common complications of cataract surgery being opacification and cystoid macular edema. What the symptoms are, what causes them, who is at increased risk and how they are treated. I had my cataract surgery in Rhode Island and was not educated about these common complications and had both very soon after the surgery in my left eye. I thought I was going blind. It was so scary. Dr's need to educate their patients personally, not just put these complications in a consent form with general terminology. THANK YOU!!!

This is the best, most helpful cataract surgery video on TH-cam! Thank you so much, Dr. Ficco!
My doctor did not address the issue of expecting the flashes and vertical lines in the peripheral vision. When I first saw them, I though oh, no, something is wrong! Also, like you said, now that my vision is clear, I can see my floaters so much better! 😄 Wish I had known this beforehand so that I wouldn't have been needlessly alarmed. I'm about to go for my final exam, and the flashes and vertical lines have disappeared and my vision is better than it's ever been. I can see differences in color that I couldn't before. The blues and whites are beautiful!

It’s great that you explain the significance of new flashes or floaters as possible retinal related complications. As one who had retina detachment after a cataract surgery, I reached out to my doctor and was “assured” that it was probably some “vitreous detachment”. Not untill I told him that I see a black curtain covering my lower field of vision, did he see me. It required a Vitrectomy, a gas and a buckle to save my vision…

Oh my goodness, I just had cataract surgery 2 days and my 1 day post op yesterday. I told my doc about the shadow and flickering I kept seeing. She said that should go away in time or you get used it. I didn't feel very assured leaving and went on the hunt for information from others of what they experienced after cataract surgery. After a day of searching, this morning, another day later, I found your video. I have to say I feel SO MUCH BETTER ... especially listening to you talk about the shadow and flickering. The flickering is a little better but I still see the half arc on the right of my right eye. It affects my peripheral vision. But when I'm busy or watching a movie at night, I realize I don't notice it and then I notice it. Because I wore progressives before hand, I definitely will need glasses, as my left eye (being the non-dominant) needs glasses. The reason the right eye bloomed was due to gas inserted in my eye during a macular hole repair. Currently I'm wearing 6 year old glasses for computer and reading so that my left has the benefit of also seeing well but these glasses are old and there 2 more after it. Because of the repair on my right eye (being dominant) and now the new implant, the 2 glasses after the current ones I'm using are not usable ... So it's quite a conundrum. I'm told I cannot entertain new glasses until 4 weeks out. I've an appointment already made. The whole process was amazing and pain free and your video just made my morning better. Thank you so much for this.

Thank you for the answers. I was wondering about some things which turned into worry. My Doctor did a great job on my eyes, but not answers forth coming of some of the things which happened after surgery. They told me and gave me a sheet of things not to do. Things like keeping my eyes from water. Lifting heavy weights. Not to bend down. And take my prescribed drops. They didn't tell me about the halos around lights. Sometimes I get that and sometimes I don't. I also saw a shimmer off to one side of my left eye. But not when they did my right eye. Which made me worry. Now I see shadows I guess you would call it. But my vision is heaven. Just somethings make me worry. I've been back at work now for a month. I don't have the words to describe how much happier I am. You eye surgeons should be blessed.

I am 20 hours after surgery and counting every second until I can get in for my one day visit because there’s tremendous pain coming from the eyesocket as bad as an untreated toothache, then it’s radiating down to my jawbone. Really emphasize that it's very uncomfortable trying to sleep the first night. I had tearing up throughout the day after. Also, make sure you have food already prepared so you don't have to do anything except put it in the microwave. I've been given antibiotic drops and steroid drops. For me the recovery is worse then the surgery. Let's see how I do on the second day.

If the dark arc doesn't go away there is a surgery that is reverse optic capture. I learned about it from Dr. Wong in Cleveland but the surgery is done for the past few years in Austin where I live. If you put your hand up to the dark side and it goes away, you are a candidate and is a simple surgery. My dr. I have from my cataract surgeries said you adapt to the dark side or your brain will adapt to living with it. Thank God I found out about this procedure.

You didn't mention other kinds of complications post-cataract surgery. I had cataract surgery after having surgery for detached retina. About a month after the cataract surgery, I still had some clarity issues with the new lens. I had to have a laser treatment called YAG to clear that up. My eye also developed macular edema due to the surgeries, and my vision was constantly out of focus. Ten or so months later, I'm still having problems with inflammation. I've had 3 steroid injections and they've helped a bit, but my vision is still problematic.

I am 27 and got a cataract surgery on my left eye. My doctor/surgeon told me after 24 hours that I don't have to wear my eye shield anymore. The day after my surgery I went to see him for my post op appointment and he took my eye shield off and threw it in the trash. I'm on my 5th day of recovery and I'm kinda worried that maybe he shouldn't have done that, and maybe I should still be sleeping with the eye shield? I don't know. I also rubbed my eye today for the first time and am now worried that I might have messed up my eye. I wish he didn't take the eye shield away ):

I had surgery this past Aug.(2022) It is now 1/21/2023. I could see a lot better before the surgery. I was told that because I didn't have money for the "good lens" I would have to wear glasses. I was used to being able to see up close and I didn't want to wear glasses for close up but only for distance as that is what I was used to. So he said he could set them that way. Unfortunately and apparently he doesn't do it this way often enough to really know how. I can hardly see at all. my eyes feel stressed like I haven't had sleep in 48 hours. they are so distorted that I see as though I've had the flu ever since the surgery. I don't have the flu nor have had but I see through my eyes as though I do. I am hoping the glasses will eventually help my eyes not be tender as of now all these months later, I can hardly touch my left eye.

I had cataract surgery, right eye, on May 19 five days ago with just a standard (no correction) lens replacement. That eye had not great distance vision, but now it’s much worse, to the point I can’t drive because signs are very blurry. My reading vision actually improved in that eye. That seems just the opposite of what you said to expect. Will my distance vision eventually improve? BTW I have Fuchs Dystrophy - would that be a consideration as far as worsening distance vision? Thank you! Your presentation was excellent.

Your comments would be appreciated: I have had experience & recovery of eye surgery therefore I have some knowledge of the time period and process required for recovery. First procedure was for removal of a pterygium, then after a period of 2 years I had LASIK correction achieving mono vision (left eye for distance/right eye for reading). 20 years has passed and now I am looking at cataract surgery. What issues should I be aware of as I consider having surgery. I have no current discomfort or gritty eye issues only loss of focus in my reading eye which is progressively becoming long sighted and the left eye is not as sharp as it was in its long sighted ability. Nature has determined as a consequence of ageing that a return to status quo is the norm
