The Only Guitar EVERYONE Should Have (the couch guitar)

  • Its a rare thing when you can make a statement like "everyone NEEDS a guitar like this" but I think this holds true, the "Couch Guitar" is something everyone needs. Its more of an idea than a specific guitar or brand, its the idea of a guitar that isn't expensive or precious that stays out and ready to play around the house for everyone. If you have a couch guitar you'll end up playing more, and getting better without realizing it, and you probably already have one laying around.

A couch guitar is one of the best things out there. I work at a music shop and I always get 2 groups of people. Either parents asking how to get their kids to practice more, or Adult students who are struggling to find time to play. The number 1 thing I recommend is a floor stand to keep their guitar where they relax the most. A computer desk, a couch, by the back porch. Keeping your guitar accessible makes finding time to play SO much easier.

      @DennisVlaanderen 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I have all my basses and my acoustic guitar on floorstands close to my desk. If I need a break from work I can quickly pick it up play for a couple of minutes and get back to work without having to leave the desk. It's just so nice to not have to take an effort to get a guitar off a wall, plug it in to an amp/sim and then be ready to play and hopefully have the right tone settings set for what you want to play there and then. Acoustics are great for this.

Personal opinion here: Yamaha makes some of, if not THE, best entry-level guitars. My office Guitar is a Yamaha FS800. I have Taylor and Larivee at home.

@@JS-hu7pv Without a doubt. Yamaha's beginner line of acoustic really put a lot of other brands to shame in terms of quality and price.

Here in Brazil we ALL have one like this. Almost every house has one, even if no one can play a single note. It's something cultural for us, maybe influenced by Bossa Nova and stuff. Also, since the beginning of the last century, we always had some amazing brands manufacturing this kind of guitar. A have a few with me and they have been played and loved for decades.

When my mom passed I got her 1973 Garcia classical guitar. It’s the guitar I learned on when I was a kid. It’s not really valuable to anyone outside of my family, but my mom took excellent care of it and that old wood sounds amazing.

Not a classical or a nylon string, but the Taylor GS Mini I bought on a whim during pandemic lockdown has become my most-played guitar for just this reason: it's always out, and always handy to grab; it sounds great and is easy to play. I fully subscribe to the idea of a couch guitar. If nothing else, you'll play more.

This is so true! I love this memory of my dad, when he played it in the evenings, watching tv. It's the most precious thing i own, after his death. It's a really nice quality guitar, aged so beautifully and it's always been played. I grew up around it, picking it up all the time from when i was 16. After i moved out from my parents my first girlfriend gifted me her nylon and it became my couch guitar, the one i would play all day and wrote my most beautiful ideas on. For many years i didn't use a couch guitar when i moved to another flat. That killed a lot in my development as a musician. Only recently i started playing more again. But it's mostly my mini-western guitar with steel strings. Not the same. Still don't have a dedicated couch guitar again. Thanks Rhett for reminding us! I still have the one my first girlfriend gave me. I'll have to bring it back to life! Loved it's sound. Often tuned the nylons down to C(!)-standard, which totally worked!

The "couch guitar". I love it.
As a drummer, the equivalent is sticks and a pad. 10,000 hours on the pad beats a tiny fraction of that time on the kit.
Now learning guitar, I find my beater electric guitar is what I play most - because I'm not afraid of it getting messed up - it's always out, etc.
    Love the channel, Rhett!!!

My wife had an Ovation that she got for her 8th birthday…her Uncle worked for Kaman, the company that made Ovation guitars. It stayed in tune, and had a really great tone. We have lent it to our Granddaughter, who is learning how to play at 10 years old…I miss having it out around our house, but our Granddaughter is making progress in her playing …she likes Taylor Swift…
Now, I have to go upstairs to play either my Epiphone DC II, or my Godin SDXT…you have to plug those in. Thanks for the video Rhett!

My current couch guitar is a '72 Takemine nylon-string that I pulled out of a dumpster a few years ago. It has seen better days and needs some work, but it sounds amazing. Great idea. I’ve always had one out and available when inspiration strikes or when you need to process some thoughts, which are weighing you down. Keep in mind, the inexpensive nylons can be challenging to keep in tune. Make sure the keys don’t slip. And, wide fretboards can be difficult for short fingers. But don’t let that deter you. It really helps to stretch out your fingers and hands. The nylon doesn’t invade the sonic surroundings, either. In other words, those in the room with you won’t throw pillows at you. 😊🎶🎶🌈🌅🎶🎶🩵🦋🌻

Yep! I have guitars around the house. Last year I purchased a PRS P20, their parlour acoustic, specifically to be used when learning new things on an acoustic guitar - for those sessions I don't really want the bulk of a dreadnought. Wherever I am in the house there's multiple electrics and acoustics within one room's distance, so I can pick one up quickly.

I love the concept of the couch guitar! A couple of years ago I picked up a 3/4 size nylon string for my kids to learn on. $150, stays in tune and sounds fine. Easy to play. It's always out in our living room and gets played all the time. Evry time I pick it up, I play play differently then I would on my other guitars and it sparks creativity. Guitars are meant to be played and having one that is accessible and at a peicepoint where you don't feel the need to keep it locked up and safe is a great addition to the arsenal.

This year I got back into nylon string guitar. Started with buying a Godin Multiac to play jazz on, something special about jazz on an electric nylon. Then pulled out the old classical and got back to that. Playing in a band I realized how rusty my fingerstyle chops had gotten. I do not keep any guitar out but the cased guitar is always in front of me. There is a certain plus on having a guitar sitting on a stand close at hand.

My preference for a couch guitar is one with a smaller body, like a parlor guitar, a 00 size body, or even a 3/4 size. I discovered this after buying a gorgeous, maple jumbo by Lowden; great guitar that is just too big for comfort on the couch. This lead to the acquisition of a modest collection of various sized guitars, both acoustic and electric. Joyful in itself, but not a necessary excursion for everybody!

I had a couch guitar- It's a 1920's parlor guitar I got at a flea market for 5 bucks in 1977. It's just that it's not "couch" anymore. It's been worked on and kept playable over the years, and it's probably a hundred years old, and so it lives in it's case, now. I keep my 69.00 Glarry Strat-o-something and a Yamaha desktop amp near the couch now.

I have a very old Takamine c128, which is also a classical guitar. Even though it was made as a student guitar back then, the specs are like a top notch acoustic sold today.
It's funny because it was built around the same time as when I got my first guitar and I absolutely did not want a Classical guitar then. Lol, now just like Rhett, I find myself playing it over some other favorites. I'm even studying a little Bossa Nova and learning new progressions because of it.
I like your videos Rhett, because they say to me that a person learning and playing music, should not limit themselves. Instead continue to expand their experiences, by trying new and sometimes very old things.

A next to the couch guitar rack also works; 5 (6 with one laying there) "couch" guitars. Ha. I don't actually have a couch to be honest, but I do own a guitar rack.
Key here is always have at least one accessible if not actually left "in your way" on purpose.
I am loving these new videos, Rhett. Yamaha is awesome and a used version of that student classical guitar can sometimes be found for the price of a nice dinner. The Revstar with the 2 p90s has been a guitar I have wanted since they hit the market...none of my guitars have cost 800...I'm working my way up haha.

I agree about a couch guitar. I have one. But the challenge is that leaving it out in most places causes problems. After living in an area with wide humidity shifts my couch guitar developed a crack and it needed too frequent truss rod tweaks. Something like a Taylor Mini is less likely to do that but the low end is weak. So I’ve accepted that repairs are just a cost of the benefit of a couch guitar.

I had a small classical when I was in High School in the early 80's.... it went EVERYWHERE with me. I used it as a paddle on a canoe trip! It got stolen and was never replaced. More recently, I've put nylon "folk" strings (classical string with a ball end, basically) on my kickin-round-the-house guitar, and it has become my new "couch guitar". I also have a Yamaha Guitalele... a small scale with 6 nylon strings tuned ADGCEA... it ALSO gets played a ton!

    Love this.
I purchased two guitars sequentially, and felt 'bad' becaused I play the cheaper one because of this principle exactly! Having it out and accessible is a game changer. Not to mention, (1) its nylon (easier on the fingers), (2) its a slim body so its easier to relax and play with (3) it has the cut away so you still have access to the higher registers.
Again, I love both of my guitar 'babies', but certainly the one you're around more often gets more attention.

My couch guitar is a Ibanez GA35TCE. I bought it with a cracked headstock for $50 which I repaired. I like the fact it has a thin body which make comfortable to sit with on the couch and a built in tuner. Its my first nylon stringed guitar in fact I had to watch a youtube video to learn how to string it. As you say my most played instrument because its alway there

Yes on the couch guitar! As a big martin guy, I have a Jr Martin as a couch guitar. 000c-junior-10e (about $350 used) makes a perfect short scale small body sit anywhere. And it sounds great too!

i picked up a nylon stringer last year and what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be. Especially fpr anyone who works with their hands a lot and their fingers get beat up. when my fingers crack a bit, that steel B & E string are like egg slicers, i can play this thing all day no matter what my hands are like

I agree. I've had my nylon string couch guitar for years now. I also have a camper guitar. It's a Takamini Jasmin. No big deal if it gets dinged or burnt by accident. Makes a great emergency paddle too... OK not a great one. Blessings!

This is part of the reason why I keep my Strandbergs on a rack in my normal living space. They're super compact, lightweight, and comfortable, so I just mindlessly end up with one in my lap all the time. It's easily the most impactful change I've made to get myself to play more regularly.

I have a Spirit Steinberger as my couch guitar and I think being headless is a huge advantage. They're always in tune because you can't bump the tuners by accident. I can just stand mine in any corner or niche without worry.

Ive had a couch guitar for 15 years, What a great idea for a video! Mine is a 1960's made in Japan classical, found in a friends uncles trash pile. I call it Trigger II, after Willie's Martin. It's an old beater, and an old friend.

My father-in-law is a pretty skilled finger-picker, and a very similar Yamaha (I think it's a CS-100) is the kind he has. I love the same things about it - wide neck and that warm, easy nylon sound. I can play it in the same room as my son when he is sleeping without risking waking him up. I feel precious about my current couch guitar because it was a gift from my wife... maybe a reason to pick up an easy beater.

I have 2 "couch” guitars that I always keep by my favorite chair in the living room that gets played the most among all my guitars. A Martin D-HD28V that I have on a music stand by my chair and a Strandberg Boden classic that I just lean against the chair. Whenever I’m watching TV or a movie I’ll usually have one or the other in my hands just going through finger exercises, chords, scales, or just noodling and making up new song ideas. I don’t consider this my official practicing, but it’s really important. Like I’ll try to learn something in my more official music room and have focused practice on whatever I’m currently learning or working on, but the couch guitar noodling is used to later reinforce a lot of what I’ve tried to learn that day and brush up on older stuff too.

the idea of having a solid but lower cost guitar that you leave out at all times is awesome! have been doing this with a cheaper yamaha that I have, and yeah, its the one that I always play in the morning with my cup o' coffee, the one I bring out to the front porch and pick late at night, the one i tend to grab when I'm just sittin' around.
it fills in the empty space at the house when there's nothing going on... there's the couch guitar, ready to fire up the energy in the room!

Just found my couch guitar last week and it was one I never expected to pick. Went into guitar center trying to get a cheap electric rig for my barracks room since all my other guitars are in storage and ended up walking out with a D'Angelico acoustic they had on clearance for $260ish. Never considered them before but it's easily the best acoustic I've ever played.

The problem with the classical guitar for that purpose for me is the wide, very flat neck. I've got a pretty little Takamine G406S New Yorker Parlour guitar I've had for 10 years, it cost me £425, and it never leaves my sitting room. The neck is slim and so easily playable. I bought it specifically so I can pick it up for comfort any time I'm sitting watching tv, chatting, listening to music or just to have in in my lap. The guitar shop on Denmark Street in London I bought it from had fitted it with a pick-up and it sounds great plugged in but I rarely do that. Guitars are just the loveliest things. I've been playing since '71 and still get loads of pleasure just from looking at guitars and we all know what that's like.
    Great video Rhett.

I encouraged my guests to play any and all my instruments. I also have a cajon around too.... that is for me when there is a jam going on. Hahaha

I have a Cuenca 10 classical. It's always out, sitting on its stand and I will randomly pick it up and play something I like, or just practice a small phrase that I'm working on. There is a lot to be said about just having something always out and ready to play whenever you feel like it, and not just sitting in a case. Having said that, these Yamaha classicals are still pretty nice guitars, still something to respect and aren't a throw-away guitar.

My "couch guitar" is an Orangewood. Super cheap, easy to play, just an all-around banger of a guitar. My Les Pauls are in cases and my Strat hangs on the wall in my office room, so I just naturally reach for the Orangewood because it's out and ready to go.

My always handy guitar is a Silvertone 1448 shortscale model (minus the amp-in-case, which I have but never use). Takes up very little space, weighs almost nothing and sounds surprisingly good unplugged. (Sounds fab plugged in, of course.) I got it many years ago when I lived in an apartment and had to keep the volume down. That’s no longer an issue but there’s no reason to replace it with anything else.

I recently picked up a Fender CP-60s for that exact purpose. I was considering a nylon string, but there was a good deal on the Fender so I couldn't pass it up. For $170 I got a parlor guitar with a solid top that plays great. It was surprisingly good right out of the box. I play it all the time, and I totally agree a couch guitar is great to have around. I will definitely try a nylon at some point as well for a little variety.

Over a decade ago I had my very first guitar lessons and the only guitar I had was a classical one. I remember struggling to play it since my hands were really tiny back then so they hurt whenever I played that guitar.
I still have that very first guitar because it's part of the family, though I don't play it much since I have other guitars that are more comfortable.
