TRIP REPORT | Alaska/Horizon - Dash 8 400 - Missoula (MSO) to Portland (PDX) | Economy

On April 6, I flew Alaska/Horizon from Missoula, MT to Portland, OR. Midway through this flight, the pilot made an announcement informing us about an emergency diversion to Spokane, WA due to an issue with the aircraft's deicing system. After a bit of confusion on the ground, we boarded another aircraft and finally arrived into Portland just under 2 hours late.

Alaska Airlines is the BEST United States airline!! They are so polite, and helpful if there are problems. I can't think of another airline that handles problems so professionally. You were diverted, switched to a completely new aircraft, and you still made your connection. 5 stars Alaska... Well Done!!! Also, 5 stars to Quintin... Great Video!!!

I disagree. I’ve had a bad time trying to fly ASA but maybe the regional carrier is better.
@@SkyHighGuys I live in Dallas, and my family ALL lives in Spokane and Seattle. Alaska is always the cheapest. I once got first class for only $203!!!!! Great Service. I've flown on all of their planes. Great Airline!! I've flown on every US airlines except JetBlue. Alaska is, in my opinion, the best!! What was your experience on Alaska like?

SkyHighGuys Alaska is easily the best us non legacy carrier, in my opinion the bets us airlines is delta

Cabin service is usually pretty limited on flights that are supposed to be that short. I just flew a 40 min flight on AA earlier this week, and the only drink options in economy were bottled water or orange juice. No snacks even.

Sadly until about 20 years ago, Horizon would serve meals on their flights from Spokane to Seattle and Portland.

yes to the Q 400...it did look dated but seats looked comfy...great seat for viewing...watching prop switch pitch..yes having a TIGHT connection is bad...watching theconnect time melt away during a delay...you got an added bonus..GEG was home of the 1974 WORLDS FAIR....thanks for the ride-along Q :)

Next time you are on a Q400 could you please not put music during the taxiing? The taxiing sound of the Dash-8 is such music in itself! :)

Nathaniel Anthony I am 6‘6“. I have smacked my head a few times on board aircraft. Doesn’t matter if it’s a commuter plane or a long range airliner. It’s those overhead bins!! 😂😂🤣🤣😫😫
Any de-icing issue at that altitude can become far more serious than most folks realize. Glad they were able to divert and descend safely.

In my opinion the tray table is good for a regional airline
You didn’t happen to run into the Eskimo on the flight did you? I been wanting to meet the guy since I was about 9 years old. On my first flight on Alaska Airlines I was so excited because I thought I was going to finally meet the Eskimo from the tail of the plane. I even wore a suite and bow tie lol I thought he was the guy flying all the planes.

“The diversion almost caused me to miss my connection to NYX, which would have stranded me here overnight”. Not to be rude or anything but would you rather miss a flight and still be alive or would you rather have the pilots risk all the passengers lives trying to get to Portland on time. I’d take the stay alive and miss my flight scenario. A flight can be replaced while your life cannot.

I think you’ll find you actually boarded N445QX. That’s what it said when you boarded the second time on the front of the aircraft.
it was good that you were able to move up a row or two for a better view nice....And thanks for the music as the aircraft started to back away from the gates....That sounds like nice dinner/cocktails music. Thanks...

Thank you for showing your wonderful face. It makes the vid more personal. Realizing you had a connection in Portland, it was a shame you didn't have time to see Spokane. It is a lovely city with a lot of great things to do. I enjoy my time there each time I go. #ZagNation also resides there. Go Bulldogs !

What did you think of KGEG? It's a decently small airport I think but as a hometown kid (35mi West of Spokane) we enjoy it not being a real big facility or high traffic. Stay safe!

The Missoula airport is under construction right now, Alaska flights now board upstairs and passengers walk down a jet bridge down a switch back ramp and into covered trailers and the board the aircraft at either gate 1A or 1B.
What did you think about Spokane?
I’ve lived there my entire life. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve flown in and out of Spokane on an Alaska Q400

Spokane Int' (KGEG) is a fantastic airport. Quiznos is my favorite there

PDX sucks right now there are no shops and hard and confusing to find your gate I am also from PDX

I'm not Qman, but I can tell you that if you miss your connection, then you rebook to the next available flight that day or the next day. Hotel, food, and transport vouchers are given to you if needed. By the way, I agree, the observation area is nice. Dallas Fort-Worth Airport has a train that is also good for plane spotting. It runs above the airport with great views of the planes and stuff.

Why did you board through the back if your seat was in the front
Christopher Aviation Boarding from the back of the aircraft is more common, and found more often at smaller, regional airports. Knowing from experience, Alaska does this to speed up the time it takes to board the aircraft. This helps prevent delays, since the smaller walkways found at regional airports take much longer to set up, then bringing a jet bridge over to the aircraft. Hope this answered your question!

Did you make your connection in Portland? I've never been diverted in the lower 48, I've only been diverted on flights between Anchorage, AK and Dutch Harbor, AK.

We would rather land at a company controlled airport with onsite maintenance if possible it makes everyones lives easier.
The sistership to this aircraft n449qx was the one destroyed in the stolen aircraft hijacking ar seattle
Well, I think most liked the old logo and the “meatball” but Alaska does what Alaska does. Standardization of livery and other things. Ohh, and there will never be WiFi on the Q400. Unless they buy brand new ones.

I feel scared with these propeller type engines with visible Fan Blades. I think these fan blades gonna stop or break anytime. It’s silly I know.

fly southwest airlines on a 737-800 sometime and if your plane ever diverts to omaha i can give you a ride and somewhere to spend the night
@@liflyer0413 what would you do if your plane got diverted to omaha one time back in 2004 i was only 3 years old my delta flight from atlanta to omaha got diverted to kansas city due to severe weather also the night of the ef 4 tornado destroying hallam nebraska just south of lincoln arrived in omaha at 2 in the morning and say you would be stuck in omaha til 7am where would u sleep

I can't prove it, but I was going to say anyway that the Bombardier Q400 is my least favourite aeroplane. There have been 25 landing gear collapses/failure to deploy incidents over the last 10 years and the plane has a notorious unreliability record too. Several airlines have actually publically complained about all the issues. Bombardier themselves have totally walked away from this plane, even the maintenance and spare parts provision was sold off to another company.
Did it have a sink in the bathroom? Oh, I answered my question.
Both Missoula and Spokane had quite the collection of Avros, and they seemed to be owned by the same company. Anyone know which firm and what they are used for?
