It doesn’t. Notice the meter didn’t go up at all when he used the boost.

Happened to me too. It happened after I ran on the tunnel’s ceiling and came back down. The game briefly got confused on my positioning and made me run the other way for a second before dying.

I know this comment was four years ago, but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to veer off of the path the uploader took. There are some alternate shortcuts to go about some of paths in this level.
