    On this episode of Pointless History, we do a follow up to the very first episode about the Satisfaction Guitar played by Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO. There were multiple Satisfaction guitars, but what remains the same is Mark keeps duct taping and attaching guitar pedals (or stompboxes, whatever you would like to call them) to his electric guitars. There are some new discoveries and new info about these guitars that I either failed to mention in the first episode or found out later on after the episode was published. From different guitars, discovering unknown pedals, and even guitars before Mark started covering them with duct tape and pedals. Some info that answers some questions, and then some info that brings us close yet far to the answer, but still unknown. Enjoy this episode of Pointless History on the follow up of DEVO's Satisfaction Guitar.
    DEVO's Satisfaction Guitar Follow Up - The Famous Duct Tape Guitar - Pointless History - Episode 5
    Update: The mystery guitar at 7:23 is a Supro Super Seven( thanks to "one remains" for the info!), and at 7:25 is actually a Fender Musicmaster (thanks to G L Wilson for the info!)

    Mark started taping stomp boxes to his guitar after an incident in NYC - back when he'd have them on the floor like every other guitarist. At some point during breakdown to start the load out process some fan(s) in the front row stole his pedals (which also happened to me once in Seattle). So Mark being the genius he is thought "Good luck trying to steal THESE pedals since they are duct taped onto my guitar.".

    DUDE. It's covered with duct tape and stomp boxes!!!!!! BAHAHAHA....And I thought I was goofy sticking a rat and an Orange Squeezer together in my strat. I duct taped them together and then plugged them into the guitar, but not on the face of the guitar. GREAT VID. Keep going. You have a great voice for this too. I have fallen in love with Devo again after forty years.

      Thanks very much! Appreciate the support and feedback! That’s awesome you duct taped a Rat and Orange Squeezer pedal together. A few years ago, I decided to make a not so good replica of the current Satisfaction Guitar, bought an off brand black right handed Stratocaster, a Boss Distortion pedal, and first a multi pedal that happened to have the ring modulator effect (it used an ac adapter but I wanted to play freely without have two wires [the guitar wire and the ac adapter wire] to worry about) I bought a DOD Gonkulator, a ring mod and distortion effect in one pedal, it can run on 9 volt batteries as well as the Boss DS1. I only use this guitar for shits and giggles now, like if I dress up as DEVO for halloween or something 😂. Anyways, Thanks very much for watching this video! I appreciate the support! 🤙

    7:25 - from the shape of pickguard you can see this is not a Fender Mustang, but a Fender Musicmaster. Although Mark's hand is obscuring a possible bridge pickup (which would make it a Duo Sonic) the absence of a pickup selector switch confirms there is only a single pickup, hence Musicmaster.

    It was actually a great idea to duck tape those pedals to the guitar. The idea of pedals being far away on the floor really makes no sense if manipulating them in real time is the idea. I’m surprised that no one (aside from Vox way back in the ‘60’s) has designed a guitar that is set up with perhaps a milled slot that could accept specially designed pedals for it that you could slide in place and would interconnect without cables. That way dialing in whatever you wanted would be easy while you’re standing and playing. The idea of having to go to your pedalboard and bend over in the dark on a stage to dial in repeats on an echo device or more fuzz or phase is really nuts. There are a lot of people out there who make guitars. Where is something like this? Now with the advent of so many micro pedals, the internal electronics have been made so much smaller. It’s time for a radical guitar design.

    • @Bikewithlove
      @Bikewithlove ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I designed my first pedal circuit guitar & It’s almost finished. It’s a strat copy with an ab-y pedal built in, two output jacks, and a switch for one or both. An ab-y only needs power for the LED, which isn’t needed for ‘one or both’ use, so the diode was removed. It all fits right under the pickguard. More to come…

    I had a mid 70's Electra sort of LP style with about 4 pedals built in. I believe Electra called them "modules," but they were essentially interchangeable analog pedals with batteries and all. Huge gaping rout cavity in the back. Even from its inception it was largely considered a hokey gimmick. It hung brand new in the local music store until they got desperate to sell it so I got a real deal. Played nice and a very ornate guitar. Sunburst with real inlay on the headstock and mop binding. I didn't keep it a year.

Just because you identified the box, it does not necessarily mean you have identified the electronics inside. They were known to pull out the old soldering iron on occasion. There's an interview with Mark somewhere where he has I think it was an old calculator that he used for the keys to run some completely other do-dad. Don't remember the details.

He drew on a picture of Ibanez guitar to make it look like a spud, and told them to paint it brown. What he got was the blue “Cloud” guitar, along with the blue Iceman. I know years and years later a company did make a proper Spud guitar, a Spudocaster I think it was called. Can’t remember the company’s name though.

    By today's effect standards, that isn't many effects for a rock band guitarist. And please don't forget that Bob (2) Casale played lots of guitar and keys, as did M.M. If somebody snagged my effects board at the close of a performance, I would stop using them also. And anybody still using duct tape for anything besides ductwork only would for the dull gray color, or because they haven't experienced gaffers tape. Or don't care about a sticky mess only resolved by toxic solvents.

    Regarding the first Electro-Harmonix mystery pedal you mentioned in these videos (1978 SNL "Satisfaction" performance), I think your assessment is correct with "The Silencer". My first thought when I saw it in the last video was "Doctor Q", which was released in 1976, but after comparing graphics, I think "The Silencer" is probably correct. Although I do not know why you'd want to mount that to your guitar, especially in a spot where your arm usually goes for an effect that really is usually always on and could be placed on the amp end of the chain. I get the feeling he just didn't want to have a pedalboard in his feet space. Anyway, great work on this and the other video!

    • @EPYScopeMedia
      @EPYScopeMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much! It seems it could be The Silencer but with the tape covering it, we’ll never really know what it is. I totally understand about the placement of that pedal right where Mark’s arm is when playing this guitar, it’s definitely an uncomfortable position 😂 and also weird that he doesn’t use a pedalboard. I think at that time when Punk Rock and New Wave was starting to form, I think they were trying to create trends. I know some bands were putting duct tape all over their guitars and equipment (One that comes to mind is Tim Smith of Cardiacs [RIP]), I’m guessing Mark was trying to start some trend of making good use with duct or gaff tape, whatever tape they were using, and actually taping pedals to the guitars. 😂 Just a little assumption. Anyways, Thanks for watching my video! Appreciate the support and feedback! 🤙

    I think the one knob pedal at 4:35 is either a small clone or a small stone. My bet would be small clone by the color, or he could have colored it differently. Its hard to tell if its colored by him or if its the normal silk screen paint used on ehx pedals getting worn off

  • @adeptgopnik

    7:27. that is a Fender Musicmaster. You can tell because there is no pickup 3 way selector. If it was a Mustang, it would have the two switches above the pickups. You can also tell it is a shorter scale. A musicmaster is 22.5 inches while a Mustang is 24. The obvious giveaway is the pickup selector or lack of though.
