  • Foundations should be a game of "how little can I touch the reins".
Many people ask how long it takes to get a horse to hold a straight line, or a circle with loose reins, or bridleless. They have this misconception that repetitions of these patterns with tight reins will magically teach the horse true self-carriage and direction.
This can't be further from the truth. Horses, like most animals will only learn the firmest cue applied if multiply cues are applied at the same time. This is known as "Trace learning". So if you have your reins tight, and apply your leg for corrections between two points on a straight line, your horse only thinks of the reins, not your legs, and not the points you are practicing to get them straight. No matter how many times you repeat the pattern.
