    Hi
You can also use the bottom few inches of your pattern for the top edge of the trim border.

I just used this technique to extend the length of a child's knit top with an embroidered band. It worked really well. I especially like how neat the join at the centre turned out. Thank you for sharing this technique Kay.

I just love this idea/technique.. I have some tops that have shrunk lengthwise and become too short.. This is just a perfect way to make them prettier and wearable again!..Also, I will be using your tip about using the open-toe foot for topstitching.. Thank you so much for this!

Great video. What if the hem of a skirt or dress is slightly curved. Example, some A-line skirt hem lines have a tiny curve to them. Would you still cut a straight decorative piece of fabric, that you'd fold in half and sew on, as you have shown?

You have a good design eye, the coordinating fabric doesn't make it look like an add-on. Love your finishing techniques.
    BTW, your outfit is gorgeous!

I'd like to know where you get your fabrics? There's only one place and one store to go to here in Birmingham Alabama for fashion fabrics and that's JoAnn's. 😟

Especially with a small scale print as you're using on the short skirt, could you match the print at the center back so as to make it appear seamless, by leaving enough space to adjust the overlap from the beginning of the stitching, since you have left space on both end of the hem band?

Love this idea! But i do have a question... If you're seaming the hem band because the width of the fabric is not long enough to go completely around the botyom hem, why not sew each individual piece to the front and back and include them in the side seam?

    Hi
I knitted a frock for a 1-year-old and suddenly the family wanted a change in design. When I did that, the frock from waist below is getting too heavy.
I stopped knitting any further since it will become very wide and heavier.
Is there anyway I can sew (by hand, no machine) a hem band to the bottom and finish the frock?
    1. Can hem bands be used with knitting?
    2. Will it look nice?
The frock is a combination of white (yoke) and maroon (the flare) colours. I need to atleast add another 4 inches to the length.
I will be extremely happy if you could help at your earliest and suggest any other alternatives too.
    Thank you

hmm how things change! I am old school, so the back seam is off looks like about an 1/8 inch, old school says measure and sew all seams then put it on the skit, and pray the it all fits..so there isn't 1/8th inch off at the hemline..BUT today's people aren't that picky..so I guess the easy way is ok for you. I however would have to do it the old school way.

Try using a wide zigzag stitch with a short stitch length close to the edge of the seam allowance or use an overcast stitch along the seam allowance edge.
