Excellent content 😊 0:48 In Anuradhapura trees were sacred 💙 2:30 In the 1870’s, Manhattan had few trees outside the island’s parks 🤨 2:53 In modern day Hong Kong, tall skyscrapers and underground infrastructure make it difficult for trees to grow. - I lived 8 years in Hong Kong 4:16 No city is more committed to trees than Singapore. Since 1967, Singapore’s government has planted over 1.2 million trees 🌳🌳🌳🌳. Trees and vegetation currently cover over 50% of Singapore’s landmass! 4:49 By 2050, it’s estimated that over 65% of the world will be living in cities. City planners can lay an eco-friendly foundation but it’s up to the people who live in these urban forests to make them homes for more than humans.
I have planted several trees on our property. I've planted tall trees on the south side of our property to shade our home in Summer and several fruit trees in our back yard. My neighbor has cut down all trees and shrubs and uses only their A/C to cool their house. This same neighbor complains if any of my trees drop a single leaf in their yard. If their A/C breaks down or we have a sustained power outage they cook while we enjoy the shade of our trees.
When i finished watching i remember a conference of an architect in my school years ago about his three main goals on planning and building a house or any infrastructure. Believe it or not, environment is his first priority. Without some greens he said, its not already balanced and no harmony at all.
Very impressive! I always know that trees and greens are good for both the environment and the dwellers but never fully figured out the reasons behind. This video brings me new perspectives to look around my neighbourhood. Glad to know that y city is also dedicating to plant more trees and build more green spaces, nowhere to the Singaporean level though, but according to the report, Shanghai aimed to have 18% of the land covered by greens. Last year, the number was already 17+%, hopefully it would be completed!
I live in Central and Glendale in phoenix az. When I visit my parents i. The west, their house is sometimes 3 degrees hotter outside than my house! My neighborhood is in the heart of a heavily treed district.
Warsaw has lots of trees and parks we also started creating city meadows with wildflowers instead of grass so that bees and other pollination insects can thrive 😊. Also we have a campaign going on to build bee homes and hotels around town and suburbs it’s been great 🐝!
This reminds me so much of a game called "Block'hood". Where humans and animals are equally important, trees are essential, which make the city truly green.
"When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money." "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."
Our house almost covers 70% of our total perimeter, but my father still encourages us to plant trees all around us. We had about 10trees around us (not including banana "trees") and we have 2 new seedlings growing... and yes the advantages are great... I compared the surrounding temperature of our house to our relatives close by and yeah, their perimeters are treeless and its borderline summer temperature even in mid november... their land is cemented and the only plant life are some potted roses and poppies, nothing else The air is always fresh here at my home, lots of natural shade and not the kind where its totally dark... And maybe the only disadvantage we have for having trees is the amount of fruit rotting on our feet when the fruiting season starts... we just cant eat them all, too many XD
Didn't expect the city I'm studying in to be featured here in the end! I can really tell the presence of trees does bring benefits compared to cities without them. And yes, the Gardens by the Bay Supertrees are magnificent sight. This actually gets to me personally... My city of Jakarta, specifically in a region called Kelapa Gading, used to have a boulevard planted with trees from end to end, complete with a garden in a familiar roundabout. Then the development for extensive transport comes and just within a flash, all the green stuff get chopped down and the green circle gets converted into a construction site. True, there's still some shade on the road, but of concrete and steel rather than leaves. The air feels a bit stuffier and warmer lately... It doesn't feel the same anymore, does it?
It's so sad there's a number of people who can't see the value of the trees themselves, but they need to be taught how those trees can be used to maintain human health.
I used to go to a park with an incredible nature trail and the moment you would walk into the very dense trees and even dense branches and leaves overhead everywhere it would be very apparent the much cooler temperature here in Miami, Fl.
I watched this while looking around my neighborhood and I couldn't help but think: "What lush green gardens around me, such majestic large forest guarding me, where else and where can give me more, if not my home, in *Singapore* "
Im a witness to this. In my country, constructors are tearing down trees to make more buildings and the city is getting hotter every day. For example, the other day we couldn't move because it was so hot that as soon as you moved you started to sweat.

4:49 By 2050, it’s estimated that over 65% of the world will be living in cities. City planners can lay an eco-friendly foundation but it’s up to the people who live in these urban forests to make them homes for more than humans.
Thank you so much
i cannot imagine a life without nature and trees
Sadly in my country big cities dont have much intersted in planting tree and building park
You can plant some trees on your own :) Or use Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees: www.ecosia.org
I think this kind of video about environment and also trees should be spread to many many people around the world !
TED-Ed educates us on essential topics we never thought we needed to know about
Ted ed's animation can make me fall in love with any place ! City or forest
If their A/C breaks down or we have a sustained power outage they cook while we enjoy the shade of our trees.
this is the most prettiest animation i have ever seen
I wish Uzbek government understood this
It's already late, bro😅
😂😂
I think it's never late
I wish too. Not only government but also citizens should understand
When i finished watching i remember a conference of an architect in my school years ago about his three main goals on planning and building a house or any infrastructure. Believe it or not, environment is his first priority. Without some greens he said, its not already balanced and no harmony at all.
Oh,this is nice animation style
I can learn by heart tons of advanced academic vocabulary which is beneficial to my essays. Thank you Ted-Ed
My neighborhood is in the heart of a heavily treed district.
really nice for ted ed to name-drop us!🇸🇬
Ted Ed still manages to surprise me with their beautiful animation
Warsaw has lots of trees and parks we also started creating city meadows with wildflowers instead of grass so that bees and other pollination insects can thrive 😊. Also we have a campaign going on to build bee homes and hotels around town and suburbs it’s been great 🐝!
This reminds me so much of a game called "Block'hood". Where humans and animals are equally important, trees are essential, which make the city truly green.
Love when you guys make videos about cities and anything urban planning related :)
"When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money."
"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."
Ok but i cant focus on your comment because of your profile pic XD
I love the quote at the beginning
Our house almost covers 70% of our total perimeter, but my father still encourages us to plant trees all around us. We had about 10trees around us (not including banana "trees") and we have 2 new seedlings growing... and yes the advantages are great...
I compared the surrounding temperature of our house to our relatives close by and yeah, their perimeters are treeless and its borderline summer temperature even in mid november... their land is cemented and the only plant life are some potted roses and poppies, nothing else
The air is always fresh here at my home, lots of natural shade and not the kind where its totally dark...
And maybe the only disadvantage we have for having trees is the amount of fruit rotting on our feet when the fruiting season starts... we just cant eat them all, too many XD
this video has really nice audio!! great video ted ed!!
Didn't know so much about the trees. Thank you for sharing.
It's so sad there's a number of people who can't see the value of the trees themselves, but they need to be taught how those trees can be used to maintain human health.
Beautiful video both literally and figuratively.
TREES ARE ESSENTIAL EVERYONE! DON’T CUT THEM
This is how many people agree:
⬇️
I used to go to a park with an incredible nature trail and the moment you would walk into the very dense trees and even dense branches and leaves overhead everywhere it would be very apparent the much cooler temperature here in Miami, Fl.
Roma in its whole extension is almost half inhabited neighborhoods and half natural reserves
I watched this while looking around my neighborhood and I couldn't help but think:
"What lush green gardens around me,
such majestic large forest guarding me,
where else and where can give me more,
if not my home, in *Singapore* "
Im a witness to this. In my country, constructors are tearing down trees to make more buildings and the city is getting hotter every day. For example, the other day we couldn't move because it was so hot that as soon as you moved you started to sweat.
