    This was so awesome seeing you fly into Rantoul. We lived in Rantoul between January 72 to December of 74 while Dad was stationed at Chanute Air Force Base. A lot of memories there. It was sure great to see you come in from the north. We lived in a housing area to your left, or to the east there. Great views thanks for sharing.
    I was also an Airman who went to Chanute for Tech School Training, in 1984. Again, thanks for the memories.
    Oh, BTW, in spring of 1973, if I remember right, we watched as a B-52 did a fly-by then landed at Chanute only to be used for training by the Airmen who passed through the base for training.

    Loved the windmill in the clouds. The kids reacting to the experience was great. Took me back to my piloting days. Thanks for sharing.

    I was about their age when I took my first sightseeing charter flight in a small Cessna (will never know exactly what kind of plane it was - neither me nor my dad can remember). Was a turbulent summer day near Cape Cod. I'll never forget it! I recall taking one more flight years later in another similar plane closer to home - that's the last time I've flown in a piston aircraft. I remember the sign - $15 for an hour! I'd imagine that number probably has an extra digit these days ...
    These days the opportunity doesn't present itself very often (if at all). Used to be alot more airports around here - one by one they're all being turned into condos, cookie-cutter developments, or just falling into disrepair. Sad.
    That was a productive flight there - got the windmill moved, and got the kids through the clouds. That's a win-win!
    I couldn't even imagine owning 1k acres - the property taxes here in MA would be $10,000 per WEEK, let alone the cost of the land! Besides that, I doubt there's a thousand acres of untouched land anywhere in this state, outside of the state forests. That's great to have all of that accessible to your circle of friends. What a blessing!
    Thanks for sharing this one. Great stuff as always! 👍

      Thanks Smitty! Just in the 20 years I've been flying cost for rentals have tripled almost. The golden years of general aviation was for sure the 60's-early 80's. In the last 20 years I've noticed a big decline. Like you said, airports are closing and the ones that are open all have restricted post 9/11 access. The days of being able to catch flights with people easily are pretty much gone at a lot of places. Kind of sad. It was a fun productive flight that saved my friend about 7 1/2 hours by doing it via air. :) That much land is outside of my reach but I'm glad my buddy has it as I'm lucky to get to have a blast out there with him.

      Love these videos. It's like living in the past. IIt's great that you and your wife can share that love. I got my ticket in 1978 and got about 100 hours. Then got married, gave up the motorcycle and flying. Never have lost the love of flying. To me, half the fun of traveling is the flying part. That made my business travel bearable. I do remember the $15/ hour wet rate in the Cessna 150 I trained in at Lewis Lockport. I was raised in Plainfield, IL so when you fly around that part of the county I know exactly where you are. Now I'm in Georgia (Johns Creek to be exact) and I'm 12 miles off the end of 21L at PDK. I'll sit on my deck on nice days just to watch the planes make their approach. Love it!! Keep up the good work and make a trip to Georgia sometime.

    Really great flight, Kevin. I think it was awesome that you and Matt took Matt’s boys with you. We could tell that the boys really had a great time. It was fun to hear the boy’s reaction to being in flight, and going through the clouds. It was pretty cool when one of the controllers Matt talked to was his wife. I could tell that she was taking special care of N771BC while it was under her care. 😊. After all. That was her boys up there. That’s what a Mom does. Boy, you had a pretty full load coming back, so I would think that would justify the bounce in your final landing. I remember the video when you and Jamie went to the farm. That is one huge farm, and, Boy, that windmill was really destroyed, and looked great after the rebuild. Thanks for sharing the flight with us. Really enjoyed it. Happy Flying, and safe landings.

    Great video, my instructor and I flew into Rantoul on my IFR training cross country and we both wanted to see the museum there before it closed. Shot the ILS at Springfield and then did the VOR27 into Rantoul. 21 miles from the IAF to the FAF controller at Springfield thought we were nuts. Always a hoot taking folks up especially kids who have never flown their enjoyment is just another reminder of how lucky we are to get to fly.

    Another great video. I landed in Rantoul for fuel last September enroute from KTVC to 1K4. Nice line guy there, I think he said he was from Arkansas. The kids were awesome also! We all make less than ideal landings from time to time. It keeps us on our toes planning the next one. I loved the ending with the working windmill. Thanks!! Edit: It also helps to hear ATC personnel on the other side of the fence. I feel comfortable hearing you guys interact as pilots. It is very enlightening to see your responses and requests to ATC to compare with ours as just pilots. Great learning experience.

      @310Pilot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alan...glad you're still liking the videos! The FBO was great there. I would go back again for sure for gas or if I ever have a reason to land there. I'm always in search of the perfect landings. Sometimes I get it and sometimes it gets me. :) Thank you for your comments about hearing us ATC'ers as pilots. I'm glad to share what we can from the other side of the mic. I wish I could do some ATC videos to better help pilots understand from the other side of the mic but that isn't allowed unfortunately.

    Love the videos. I got my MEL in a T310. I am working in Winnipeg (live in WA state, fly my Mooney back and forth) with no TV during off time so this is my favorite past time. Very enjoyable, though I do still miss college football. I really appreciate the effort you put forth and the quality of your work. I must say I have learned a few things watching your vids. The comment someone made regarding you and your brother and the wives being controllers gives meaning to the talent you all display. Keep up the great work. As an aside, your videos as well as a couple others, convinced me to buy a Go Pro for my daughter along with the 172 I just bought her. I'm hoping she takes a lot of footage as she begins her flying career. As much as I enjoy yours, I am sure I will enjoy hers even more. If you are ever up in Winni in the next year or WA any time let me know and I'll put you up and take you flying locally.

Thanks for the offer...I'll keep you in mind if I ever make it out that way...it's on our list. :)

      I agree Spiro, always more fun to have people you like on board with you than flying alone. The 310 is pretty excellent in stability and whether I'm flying at max gross weight or very light it feels very similar. The only real notice is a bit of climb performance...especially on hot days. Glad to help my buddy give some new life to his windmill. On to the next farm project...whatever that is.

      In a 310 do you always have (some) power in right up to touchdown? Or was that due to the gusts you had to deal with? I have about 90 hrs in a Cherokee. I was always taught to pull back power once I knew I could make the runway. Once, I took a lesson at a different school in a Cessna. There was a pretty good headwind gusting and the instructor grabbed the throttle, added a little power, and said, “ We don’t do power off landings here.” I only had one lesson with them only because I’m partial to the low wing, but I still don’t fully understand that statement.

I have my ipad mounted with RAM suction cup mount and the go pro's are mounted with the sticky mount that came with the hero5 black on top and I got an NFlight suction mount for the session that is mounted on the front window. I purchased that stuff from Spruce. Enjoy the new plane and maybe we will bump into each other one day. Where are you based out of? SUS?

      Thank you Michael. I do have the ATC audio on all my videos. Did it not come through? If you ever see any flying scenes without audio (like in this video during the two landings) it's because I had an audio problem. In this case the 6 year old unplugged it. :)I have seen a few of Jerry's videos. We have a bit of a different style but I enjoy his as well.

    One question I had, Kevin. Remember I’m not a pilot, just a viewer who loves aviation, took some flying way back in the early 1960’s. Is there a particular reason why, after you level off, and pull back the mixture levers, the left engine lever is further back than the right engine? I’m sure there is a reason. I’m just curious. Thanks.

    • @JCON631
      @JCON631 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too? Why the different fuel flows?

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Good question Richard. The old school Cessna fuel flow gauge you see on the right doesn't accurately depict the fuel flow correctly for both engines at all the different power settings. My digital engine monitor on the left side does display the fuel flows accurately to within a tenth of a gallon. The fuel flows for both engines are actually always the same and I use the engine monitor to verify this. Every flight I land within a tenth of a gallon of fuel used for the entire flight between the two engines. For example, at take off I am about 26 gallons per hour on each engine, then climbing around 18 depending then in cruise I'm around 12.5 depending on altitude and power setting. Hope this makes sense. Maybe one day I'll try to get the old gauge to be more accurate.

    • @richardvarner2802
      @richardvarner2802 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Kevin. It does make sense, and now I understand. As I said, I figured there was a reason, but your explanation made it much more clear.

      @JCON631 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Every controller I've met has their "everyday voice" and their "radio voice", and it's hard to recognize the person by voice when you meet them. (Remember before 9/11 when you could visit the tower?)

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if I do that or not but I know what you mean. There are a few guys we work with that have their controller voice when working position. :) To one up you, fighter pilots are pretty funny when you talk to them in the jet vs face to face. Of course they can use the forced air mask as an excuse but they sure sound tougher when they are strapped to the jet. Matt's wife in this video sounds just like that when you are talking to her. I do remember back when it was easier to visit facilities. If you are a pilot, they allow it again.

    • @jonthepilot6924
      @jonthepilot6924 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been to the tower and chatted with the ATC folks at Chicago Exec a couple of times. I don't know where you are, but you might call up a local Class D and see if you can take a tour of the tower. They're super friendly at Chicago Exec, at least. It's nice to put faces to the voices that I hear regularly. Each time I go, we have some regular exchanges of info on what each of us would like help with from the other (pilots vs. ATC). It really opened my eyes the first time and I learned to be more sympathetic for what ATC has to deal with.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jon, I think that is awesome that you have taken the time to get to see the other side of the mic first hand. I think it's great when pilots go to ATC facilities to learn and likewise when non-pilot controllers take flights to see it from the pilot's perspective. We are controllers at Chicago TRACON and obviously work very closely with the PWK people. Like you said, they are very friendly and easy to work with. I used to work at ORD tower and have been in ARR, DPA and MDW towers. I need to get up to PWK one day and then I'll have been in all the FAA towers in our airspace. Safe flying!
