  • Being a nurse is one of the world’s toughest callings. Our reporter Justin Ong spent 2 days caring for elderly patients at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and left with renewed respect for the profession. cna.asia/2nI3Um8

Beth Lee is it worth the wait? I’m thinking heavily of becoming one myself. Only one more year until I graduate high school.

@@ghukifymooth3827 don’t worry about it. Even if you studied Pure Biology in secondary school, you’ll still be grilled a lot more in dept in poly. Also Nursing school will prep you for the real world so no worries about it at all. (Side note: you should definitely join NYP for Nursing 😉)

Go get a bachelors degree with a focus in geriatric nursing. Most universities offer it. Mine allows me to be qualified for many different types of nursing

If you stay in Singapore like Justin, you may consider ITE, Polytechnic for Diploma in Nursing or Advance Diploma in Nursing and Universities for Degree in Nursing. If you wanted to work in Geriatrics ward, get a diploma in nursing will do. However if you wanted to specialize in Geriartrics and expand your knowledge and skills, you may go further with advanced diploma, master and so on in geriatric study. Hope I help you a little bit with these information 😊

In north America canada and the states nurses do not do that also diaper changes, and feeding ,nurses do medical things only, they have aids to do the other task

In Singapore the nurses do not only have to care for the patients daily activities of living they also have to do medical stuff such as giving medication and so on because in Singapore usually most of the family members are working and can't be there 24 hrs to take care of the patient. This is how tough it is to be a nurse in Singapore

@L E Sorry that you met nurses who do not have empathy, but it's because of people like you that make it seems like Singapore nurses are not up to the standard. From what I see most nurses in Singapore are filled with a tremendous amount of workload tending to so many patients at a time. Some family members only knows how to look at the bad side of things, if I took out my phone does it means that I'm being lazy, maybe there are other reasons why I am using my phone. Sometimes they are handling so many patients at once, they have to prioritize what is more important to attend to first, yet people call nurses to do things that their family member can do for example taking water or picking up the things that drop on the floor and if the nurses didn't attend to them at a lightning speed they will start complaining about the nurses. A lot of nurses are so busy that they do not have time to go for break or even go to the washroom. And please don't go calling nurses stupid, the nurse who talk to your mom probably did not know how to speak Chinese and knowing that you were there she probably knows that you will translate for her. Btw the MMSE are most probably standardize questions because there is a checklist or a guideline so if you believe that your mom do not know these answer because she really does not and not because of her condition you should have talk to the nurses and they would have wrote down the reason for the doctor to see. Instead you belittle the nurses and deem her as stupid. I don't care if you work in the healthcare industry you don't have the rights to look down at Singapore nurses unless you work as one.
Luckily most family members are not like you and a lot of them do appreciate the nurses hard work. I hope that you won't judge the entire population of nurses in Singapore simply base off of your experience.
