I think you made excellent choices for your breeders from Cross 5. The best female is the one with white color on her caudal but the others should produce good results. I also love the results from the HB line. The males with HB/Platinum look awesome. Thanks again for excellent work and great videos!!
I’m really enjoying the HB/Platinum ones too! Because they don’t align with my current goals, It’ll be hard figuring out what to do with them though. I’m currently thinking of just holding on to them in my bigger community tank.
@IvansGuppies I'd definitely keep them in a community tank. It's worth keeping the genes available if it's something you like. Even if it doesn't directly show up for a while, it will still be there and will show up again eventually. I've had that happen with my "mutt" guppies colony. Through keeping a wide variety of phenotypes in the colony, traits even up showing up again later.
I had that tiny kink at the base of the caudal show up on my guppies a while back. I did some careful breeder selection and so far have bred it out, thankfully. So just watch carefully for a while and really check potential future breeders for that spinal deformity and you should hopefully be able to breed it out and eliminate it. Thanks! I sat on how I was going to select the ones I wanted to keep for a few weeks. The back iridescence was ultimately the winner for the males. We will see about the females after we see potential offspring from them.
Unfortunately, it seems like Gandalf is not producing like he used to. but we will know for sure after we see if the new C5A female from the last video produces fry or eggs.
I enjoyed watching this series. I’m doing my own selective breeding crosses at home, but my objectives are not as specific as yours. I started out just trying to find guppies that were not infected with columnaris and camellanus worms. Not that easy in a smaller, more isolated city. Anyway, I picked out some studs and females and the first cross are maturing. I’ve got a rough idea what traits I will select for and against, but who knows if I’ll stick to that once the F2s start maturing.

I guess my aims could be characterized as: reducing inbreeding depression by selective outcrossing (trusting hybrid vigour), while also selecting for/against certain colours, tail size & shape. I’m working on one line that would be grey-bodied and half-black, and another line that would be blond bodied and lack the half-black genetics. In theory each line has 4 unrelated founding parents. After a few crosses and generations we’ll see if any progeny have potential.
I try not to chase parameters. I just make sure I do regular water changes. That being said, the last time I checked, the pH was neutral. All the major bad parameters were low or zero. Temperature varies from tank to tank. All the tanks are filtered through a central sump and the water is heated there. So some tanks have different temps based on flow rate and how far it’s from the sump. I’d say the average is mid 70’s. I’m working on a way to digitize this but that’ll take a while. I normally feed twice a day. Mix of dried foods and baby brine shrimp for the fry.
